Solving the Mystery of NASCAR's Ghost Track: Air Base Speedway

After having put up a bounty for more evidence of Air Base Speedway, mostly as a joke, I was inundated with DM's containing articles, newspaper clippings, and photos. I sifted through the info and with some help from the people at Speed Sport Magazine, it all came together.
Thanks to Justin Nguyen and Matthew Ludwigson for finding the photos and claiming the bounty! Check them out here:
Justin: / zappaomatic
Mattew: / mattludv
And huge thanks to Speed Sport Magazine and all the people who work there, especially Adamn Fenwick, Tom Schmeh, and the master sleuth himself Jonathan Nelson. You can checkout the article in full for yourself at their website:

As a Brit who has never watched a Nascar race in it's entirety, I can still say that both of the videos on the airbase speedway were really interesting, guess I just love a good mystery. Watched some of your other vidoes as well, worst F1 and Nascar race, and loved them both too, great channel, subbed, cheers from across the pond.

The "Calcium treated" is probably calcium chloride. They put it on gravel roads to control dust. Because it's hydroscopic, it absorbs and holds moisture from the air. Calcium applied to a gravel road makes it hard and smooth, almost as if it's paved. My dad used to sell the stuff for many years. Also works as ice melter in the winter, and is often combined with sand on the sand truck as they're applying it to the road.

Pretty much every small town regional track we've ever raced at or a claimed they they were the fastest (insert track length here) speedway. The go kart track we built behind my dad's barn is "The world's fastest 1/10th mile dirt go kart track owned by an aging Canadian named farmer named Brendan" (although if my brother builds his it might lose that designation). The over head shot of the race track looks a lot bigger than a 1/2 mile track. Were they running on the inside cut out on the track? And why? 53 miles an hour sounds about right for a track that shouldn't have any straight a ways. What you've done with this video, is to give some promoter the idea to reopen the track. There is no evidence of the track on Google maps or in real life. I am from Spartanburg originally, grew up in Greenville and the only people I know of who would know anything about this place are deceased - one of them being Cotton Owens, who is on the entry list, the other being Marty Ward who passed away from a heart attack while racing at Anderson in August of 2023 - Marty wouldn't have been old enough to race there but would definitely know about the track if it indeed was ever worth knowing about

You gotta think, in the early days of NASCAR all the way up to the 1970's they even ran Grand National races at literally everything from the dog lot outside of a random junkyard to a high school football field. A lot of these tracks were thrown up as literal sideshow attractions to local fairs and stuff left and right and only a few really lasted... Greenville-Pickens being one until the Blackwells sold it

You should try a subscription to Lucas oil racing tv the way the website works is not exactly the greatest and the commentary and video work is on the amature level but I enjoy being able to watch so many of the small town style tracks and races because they are way more entertaining... I live just down the road from IMS and although I love to go there for the parties id rather go to the indianapolis speedrome and watch the modfieds run the figure 8 or the factory front wheel drives run a flag pole race they also offer up my all time favorite cars with legends although I'm disappointed to say I'm not happy that the sanctioning body moved to an engine that costs so much more then the previous you can still run the old ones but I dont think anyone is building them or allowed to build them anymore

Other just comments on a Driver and others just made a crash compilation of NASCAR. But step ahead from everyone by giving a history of what happened in the first Talladega Races, the boycott, one-season wonderkid, and more... Can't wait on the first S1Ap road trip to the track that demolished and gone (it's fair to say that... There's nothing left in Air Base Speedway, it buried on the concrete where nothing left behind to see... Same fate like the Las Vegas Circuit, built for one season F1 only, and it gone, buried on the concrete wall of department store or the warehouse. I checked it on Google street view, and it's impossible to tell where are the exact remains of the Air Base Speedway)

This video right here, this video is what got me into NASCAR, this video it's what got me into a sport that I have recently come to love, I think it's amazing what you do, I think it's amazing that you saw this random name of a track that you never heard of and refused to put it down, thank you for turning this type of thing into a series, and thank you for the videos you create in general what you're doing it's absolutely amazing!

Can you do something like this for Meyer Speedway in Houston? Very similar situation, only one Nascar race, and little to no information besides AJ Foyt's track record.

As I watching these videos of yours. I know that the first international (I’m not sure) race was at Melbourne (Australia) and I’m thinking that, is that track they used abandoned? If it is, will you like to investigate?

Ando’s Railway I believe the Calder park grandstands and oval are abandoned but they do use the road coarse but very rarely would be cool to look into

It is so great to see a you-tube channel that not only talks about history, but helps uncover and document it. Historical archeology at it's best. The cars are great too (lol).

On a semi-unrelated note, what are your thoughts on Matty D going to the Wood Bros.?
@matthewkent6258

Maybe he can get that team a win like Trevor Bayne winning the Daytona 500
@TotoDG
@TotoDG 5 лет назад
I mean, Ryan Blaney won at Pocono in 2017. We all know Jimmie Johnson did *not* win the Clash, so Paul is definitely capable as well. The evidence would suggest that the Wood Brothers have good equipment, just as long as they have the right driver (which I believe they have for a while now).

I am incredibly excited because he's my favorite driver and if Paul Menard isn't there tO WRECK HALF OF THE FIELD maybe matt will get a Daytona 500 win

This is the beauty of the RU-vid, and internet as a whole. A big television channel wouldn't have a community to work on something like this, but RU-vid does, and it makes RU-vid more entertaining than television.

I have recently founded a racetrack on an airfield, like air base speedway, I could find no information on the road course besides some info on qualifying and the race results, you think you could make a video on this?

Anyone notice that the patch of woods directly to the right in the intro aerial photos had remained the same shape. Surely it is untouched and there could be some history in there.

I live in kannapolis NC in a millhouse on the Street a few houses down from where Dale Earnhardt senior lived with his dad. His mon Martha Coleman Earnhardt has a shop down the road where she used to sell baby clothing. She is no longer alive but her sister runs the shop now. I wonder if she would have any information on where Ralph Earnhardt use to race. The word around town is there is a dirt track somewhere in the area where races use to be held a long long time ago but most people do not know where it is. I would personally love to find out and visit it. I'm sure the property is grown up with brush now but it would still be cool to go there and see if I can find any old car parts that might have been left behind or fell off during races. It seems like it would be a cool adventure. If anyone thinks it is worth the time let me know and I will go talk to her and see what I can find out.

The chemical treatment used on the track most likely would have been calcium chloride. I have seen this stuff used on muddy BMX tracks that looked like chunky chili, and it will turn wet mud into damn near concrete in 30 minutes to an hour

Concessions could have been sold from trailers like you see at fairs and festivals or some other type of temporary setup which wouldn't have been present in the photo of the empty track.
