I'm a diagnosed sociopath..... we do know we are missing something. my doctor's call them mirror neurons. normal people take their empathy for granted. such a powerful capability, to empathize. I can emulate it. I can understand how people feel. the ultimate goal of empathy. but I cannot feel their emotions with them. I study to learn how. I feel envious to miss out on such a big thing. so I talk to people, try to get them to describe it. but none have had the right words. It's a hard thing to objectively describe. imagine how many times your empathy has allowed you to communicate with other people without words. secrets that are beyond my grasp. It's like being the only person who isn't psychic. because that's what empathy looks like. telekinetic communication. imagine how many things have been learned by that passive constant empathy you have. imagine all the emotions you got to feel besides your own. I have only science and reason to get a peice of that. to understand it. I must watch people interact, notice every movement of the body to understand the underlying feeling or meaning. I must listen closely to how people say things and calculate their secret meanings. crossed arms? either the person is cold or is defensive. do they lean in when they talk to you? they have an interest in either you or what you have to say. do they stare past your shoulder when they speak? they are remembering something. these secret communications are everywhere. and if I can learn them, I can understand how people feel, or what they are thinking. so I can learn from them, and learn about myself too. how I am similar or different. what cruel God would give me an unceasing curiousity, but deprive me of the tool to satisfy it. You can learn everything about a single person, and know nothing of everyonr else, and sometimes you can learn one thing about someone, and know something about everyone else. I want to know. more than anything in life I want to know what life is. what conciousness is. why are we here, what is emotion, are we but animals, or are we more?

Okay, I just found out about this story, and I have to say that it did creep me out a bit. Besides the apparent genius that the main character has, this story could actually happen, and that is what makes it creepy.
