Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves.
Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week, Toby has his castration and things don't go quite to plan. More stonework is completed on the barn. Hopefully a roof will be on the cards soon.

I think it's a testament to your compassion that putting Toby through anything negative, even if for the greater good gets you upset. It's just further proof that you were meant to find him and be his forever family.

Well done Sam your work looks amazing! Looks like it was always there. Rebecca we can all see how compassionate you are with Toby,we can see how his life has changed 100% compared to his lonely life he had before! He has a shelter from the wind and rain, proper veterinary treatment to treat all his medical needs , I know he is fed The best food and treats.this blip is only Toby being in pain for a little while so that he can hopefully get a new friend to keep him company all the time. You’re an amazing family all working together.

I just wanted to say Rebecca, Toby will forget about what is happening because he knows you love him. You cared so much you got him out of that lonely field where nobody saw or talked to him. Amazing how quickly we can relearn the skills of our predecessors. These structures were created by the landowners. No stonemasons were called. Maybe just a neighbor who had some experience and willing to assist in the project. I’m impressed with your dedication and willingness to tackle these tasks.

Hi Sam , Bec, Isabella, Euan & menagerie, Lovely to see a video uploaded this week - especially to see all the progress that has been made! Hopefully the weather will be continue to be calm, dry, warm and sunny. I only started watching your channel when you relocated to Ireland (I have relatives in County Meath & Cavan). Sam's work ethic, obvious love & devotion to his family & willingness to get stuck in & learn new skills as needed is so inspiring. Bec's evident kindness & willingness to multi-task different projects & responsibilities; being a wife, a mother, relocating to a different country, partner in a complete renovation, homeschooling Isabella & Evan, using the land for functional purposes, taking on an assorted menagerie etc is amazing too. Sam you have achieved so much with your lentils on your own. No easy job. Just remember... Toby had many, many years with no hoof care, and should have been gelded when he was young... Your being responsible animal owners, and even though it tugs the heart strings... many of us who have been on the land, understand... you have had to accommodate the fact that Toby had not been handled, and possibly trained not to have hoof care... Its a learning curve, and its the emotions that catch up when the unknown happens. You're doimg a wonderful job... and many will learn from your experience too! Good rule of thumb is to expect the unexpected! Perhaps a rude awakening after a much needed holiday! Love the progress on your historic stone house... Keep up the good work!!! Oh, Becs! I was crying right along with you!!! You are doing the RIGHT thing by Toby! You just have to make up for all the things that the previous owner didn’t do! This is a testament to how wonderful you guys are and just how much love you have to give to him! No matter what happens, I can tell you (as someone who worked in a busy, well known equine hospital) that you have done everything 100% RIGHT! Becky, you are only human. He will forget about it. When we first moved over, we got a pony. We had to get him gelded. The vet threw his manhood into the bushes. I was sitting knitting, and our Jack russell Floss just plonked Roscos manhood at the side of my chair. I screamed, my husband got rid. Missed you last week. You both are doing a sterling job. Sam, what a great job you are doing on the stonework.i know it much better so hard to do, but you will be a professional at this by the time you finish your home. You cry girl, you love that donkey as we pet owners love our pets. I hope things are calming down and Toby is more at ease recovering. I enjoy watching the repair work and the building up of the stone house. I never thought I would like watching, stones come together. We live in a stick house and our house was renovated 43 years ago. When I see pictures of my son standing side by side with his dad, at 7 years old, knocking down the wall in the living room I am amazed at how time goes by. You will be looking at pictures someday wondering where time went.

If you staple some of that hessian over the windows it should keep the starlings out temporarily. Your stonework looks marvelous! Good job! You're becoming quite the stone mason. I think it's hysterically funny how guys all identify with an animal being gelded. They all cross their legs and bend over like they're trying to protect their own jewels. Poor Toby. It just shows what a huge heart you have Bec, so don't be embarrassed because you get emotional. I hope Toby will be fine and don't worry, his trust won't be broken I'm sure. I believe donkeys do bleed more than horses in this situation, so try not to worry too much. You have definitely done the right thing and are setting him up to be a happier donkey in the future when he feels more sociable due to you making this difficult decision. Lintels and walls are looking awesome too Sam. Look after yourselves x

Sam what you said about Rebecca was so beautiful! With mother’s day tomorrow, that was just about the best tribute a man can give to his wife. Your stone work is looking very good too! Those lentils look heavy, not to mention the stones. Rebecca hang in there, it’s clear you love Toby. He’ll get thru it all. I’ve seen a few things about donkeys and mules lately, they don’t look as beautiful as horses, but they are supposed to be really smart. It seems like you respect them they respect you. Thanks it was so nice what Sam said..such a surprise when I was editing! He is a very loving person. Toby is definitely clever! He can be a monkey but we do love him to bits. The guinea pigs are just the best thing that happened here for the kids. They love them. I had them as a kid and the sounds bring nack so many good memories. . The noises are so sweet. ♥️

Normally I enjoy watching Sam work the stone But I must admit today I did want to find out how Toby was doing. Sam are you doing a concret morter for the blocks or lime I don't believe you have said.. Loved seeing Toby calling the dog over and the dog going over just goes to show he does want company. Don't worry about crying Bec most equistian owners have been through the night sitting in the barn worrying our selves to death normally with blankets and a thumos of hot tea. Tobys a tough old bird he will be fine

Ahh Toby is doing much better thankfully. He still isn't himself but that's to be expected. It was a very stressful time. Nell always rushes over when he shouts its so lovely to see. I believe Sam used cement mortar for the block work, but I could be wrong.

The stone you put on top of the lintels looks great ! Nice to see the whole family involved ! Gelding should have been done when Toby was younger ,so it makes it harder the older they get ! But hoping Toby and everyone is ok ! The buildings have come a long way and are looking better and better each week !

Yes it's definitely more of a risk as they get older. He was used for stud so never gelded. Hopefully he will get less aggressive now towards other donkeys. I really hope so otherwise it will feel all in vain. 🤞

One way you can help the swallows is putting up bird boxes for them. You can even get the kids involved. Maybe then they won’t nest in the house.

Toby may, or may not, realise it right now, but he'll be so much better off once he is fully recovered. I hope he's recovering now and that he's soon feeling perky again. I love how all the cats, the dog and even the chickens came to check out the guinea pigs and welcome them 💓 The house renovation is coming on amazing, and now that the weather 'should' be more reliable, it will be easier to plan the work to be done at an even pace (and not having to cram it in between showers, wind etc.) Take care, hope you're all managing to rest a bit after the harrowing week you had xx

You certainly deserve a break this weekend, after all the trauma of the last few days. Toby has very likely received more love and care with you than he's ever known. So please don't beat yourself up. It's like taking our kids to the dentist, isn't it? We know it's for their health and welfare but it still makes you feel awful for them. The house in the background is looking fantastic and the stone and limework are really showing off your hard work and persistence. Go enjoy the good weather now, while it lasts, and be sure to get the biggest ice creams you can find.

Dear Rebecca, your deep motherly love for precious Toby is obvious, no mom wants to cause pain but sometimes it is necessary for future good. Toby life has improved so much since he came to your home, he knows this and will be better. I can’t wait to see chickens riding on his back and him playing with doggy etc.. he needs to heal and your loving family will do that. Homestead looking great .. Your building is really coming along nicely. Great improvements and orchard and more animals. Toby will heal never fear he knows you love him . Halter him and give him treats and a walk so he doesn’t expect discomfort every time his halter is on.
