Hi, we are Bec, Sam, Isabella & Euan. After selling our house in the UK & travelling Europe in a motorhome for 10 months, we have bought a derelict farm in Ireland. We are keen to try and live an off grid life, free from debt whilst bringing the farm back to its former glory. We are doing this on a very tight budget and plan on doing as much of the work ourselves.
Please follow along on our journey...we need all the support we can get!
This week is a big one as the knock through starts to join the barn with the house.

Takes an incredible amount of strength to admit to one’s self that they have an addiction and / or a mental health issue(s). To admit it publicly and share your journey is truly heroic even if you don’t see that way. You got this, one day, at a time with a supportive family, a homestead journey and your AA extended family. May peace be with you Sam as your homestead and life journey unfolds. 💪

Geez Louise, how bad was that surgery job to put Toby thru this horrible "recovery"? And speaking of recovery, those of us who are in recovery know that we are all just one drink away from a drunk. As you stated, along with the fellowship, keeping yourself physically and mentally healthy is so important in keeping that one drink at a safe distance away. At 40 years sober I can still recall the despair, degradation and destruction my drinking caused. The fact that Rebecka is still with you thru all of that is a testament to the love and strength of your marriage. Love you guys!

When my husband kept bees, he really liked his Langstroth boxes. He also had Warre boxes that he built himself, but did not like them as well. The bees seemed to prefer the Langstroth. The amount of physical, mental, and emotional effort needed to do this huge task -- I'm so glad you both are being careful with yourselves and making sure you're not overdoing it. Good for you, Sam. Don't you think that caring for your mental health also means taking a break -- all of you -- when it's needed? I hope you do that. I hope you get a fabulous vacation, after the grant time frame is done! The time pressure has got to be a challenge. And remember -- even repetitive tasks with stone and mortar, etc., when you put it with moving clouds and nice music, makes a great video! Never hesitate to post any week, because you think it might "bore" us. It won't!

Aww thank you for the thoughtful message. We took a day away today actually to the lake. We did nothing on the house or land. Just spent a great day fishing swimming & kayaking. We were very much in need of a day away from it all. I have heard a few people think langstroth are better. I guess it will be a learning curve for me. The kids are mithering for an abroad holiday but that will have to wait for now I think sadly. So glad you enjoy the videos and thanks for watching & supporting us. ♥️

The progress you and Becca are making on building your little piece of heaven on Irish soil is fantastic and a joy to watch. Be your own hero first Sam. Love you and put your own life jacket on FIRST. You are just as magnificent as everyone else. Tell yourself that in the morning...tell your cells wonderful things. Then you have the strength and nous to love everyone else....your beautiful wife and bonny bairns are a great credit to you. Ihad a very dear and brilliant friend who drank....and drank....then managed to get things under control. Then his kidneys and liver slowly deteriorated causing great pain and anguish....we tried to reach out, but he couldn't listen and took himself 'home' in the way he knew how. It was and still is heartbreaking...and those who loved him miss him so much. Sending you all sincere love, hope, healing, strength and determination in abundance. PS. The house is looking fabulous ! 😆😜🥳💝💞💝 And love to Toby and all the critters too of course.

My late uncle was once an alcoholic. he lived back then, in a house where the brothers he lived with were alcoholics. It got so bad, he took a gun to an off licence and robbed the place. The police had no problem finding him, it was his local off licence. That was the madness of it all, the addiction, the all encompassing life destroying bottle of booze. He wasnt sentenced to a long term in prison, the judge gave him probation, but only because someone came forward to speak on his behalf., to explain what it is to be an alcoholic, and that what my Uncle needed was a promise to himself to give up the demon drink, and to do so, lean on a sponsor who will be there for him when ever he felt compelled to jump off the wagon. and thats what my Uncle did. from that day till the day he died, he never touched a drop. and his sponsor, that man he hardly knew who came forward to speak on his behalf, who saved him from years of prison, saved his life... he was the owner of the off licence he robbed, the man who he pointed the gun at. ITs a true story that. and the moral of that story is, to surround yourself with like minded people who have seen that part of Hell, and have escaped. that and hard work. Keep up the good work
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead Месяц назад
Wow Martin that was such an inspirational story. What an amazing person to do that for your uncle also too that your Uncle found the strength through that gesture to turn his life around. There are some amazing people in this world.
@martinobrien4882
@martinobrien4882 Месяц назад
@@theirishhomestead Remember, it wasnt easy for him. He gave up all when he gave up the demon he depended on. he moved out of the family home, never married, never attended weddings or funerals, as the draw of the demon was ever present. how his sponsor ever managed to run an off licence when he himself was a recovering alcoholic is beyond me. That been said, i live with my brother who himslef is an alcoholic, and i dont drink. the difference is chalk and cheese between us. pity, sympathy, empathy, it only goes so far when one lives with those kind of demons. your journey, and those around you, is about survival. you have survived. you are a survivor, and for that you must congratulate yourself and be thankful every day, because grave yards are full of those our own age who did not survive!

Thank you for sharing Sam. Having a close relative who is in recovery I understand the strength and courage it takes to face your demons. Good advice for everyone is to take one day at a time! Rebecca, Toby is so lucky to have you looking after him - keep in mind the long game of getting him a companion, all his pain will be worth it in the end. The build is going so well, any obstacle can be solved with a deep breath, some research and careful thought.

Good work so far Sam. Builders usually use the end roof truss to work to when building up the gable apex brickwork. In the absence of the trusses a temporary wooden "A" frame template would do the job and comes in handy at the other end to ensure the dimensions are the same. It makes life so much easier when you come to placing all your trusses. 👍
