No matter how long or how little you've been gardening, every year is different, bringing successes and failures, as well as a lot of in-between. Here is how our large garden is shaping up this year. Overall, I'm happy with it -- especially if my Fall brassicas make up for the summer ones!

I can't grow celery if my life depended on it. I have tried in every state nada zero. Wow your tomatoes are wonderful I'm so jealous. Your whole garden. Fantastic.

Well, I haven't harvested any celery yet, so I can't say I'm successful with it yet. Thank you for your kind words about the garden! We did things differently this year with the hay mulch and I'm still on the learning curve with it, but I think it's going to be how we do things from now on in regards to weed control and water retention.

very nice! Isn't it weird how one year we get great results from certain plants, and others it's hopeless? My green beans are still trying to come in, in years past, I'd have canned 60 quart jars of them by now.....I'm also barely getting tomato's, but this is my first year for melons, and the plants are taking over the yard! I never could grow melons here (lower Michigan Brighton area) before. Sometimes I think it's the seed also. What a yucky start to spring we had (cold and constant freeze), and then hot hot summer days with no rain. I'm surprised anything has grown! Blessings!

Every year is different in the garden, isn't it? It's frustrating, but at the same time, keeps it interesting / challenging. Funny -- I thought we had a great Spring this year! (We're over on the west side, mid-state lower peninsula, near Lake Michigan.) But then, I was mainly gardening in the greenhouse this Spring. This Spring was an improvement over last year though -- at least the area farmers got their crops in on time and the soybeans and corn around us look really good.

My garden was doing great, until the ducks discovered it. Your garden looks wonderful!

Really??? The muscovys ate your garden??? I thought they ate flies. . . . Yikes. I want to let them out soon but does that mean I will be jeopardizing my new little garden by the barn??
@HoneyHollowHomestead

@@Michigansnowpony I was just as shocked! I've had Muscovy ducks before, but there wasn't much in the way of gardening going on when I had them. Do you have a fence you can put up around your garden? I will say that I did not have this particular breed of Muscovy. I don't know if that makes a difference. The ones I had before were the colored ones and they were a little smaller.

It looks great! We've had a decent harvest so far this year, canning more tomatoes and green beans this week, potatoes still to harvest (planted late for here) and moving the youngest again for post grad.Sweet corn is 6 bucks a dozen here this year. Good luck with the wheat!

A few years ago I tried ground cherries and didn't do well. Now I have ground cherries EVERYWHERE. I think I must have used or spread the dirt in my garden. I've been eating, canning and freezing them. My Roma tomatoes are going crazy. Every 2 or 3 days I'm getting 3 to 5 gallons. I now have canned tomatoes with and without seeds, ketchup, BBQ sauce, tomato juice (V8), sauce and paste. Hint for the thicker stuff- take off the juice as much as you want to can then you don't have to cook the sauce and paste for hours to evaporate the water and it still taste great.

I've heard Ground Cherries will do that (come back year after year everywhere) but I think we're too cold over the winter (zone 6a) for them. I've never had volunteer plants anyway, much as I'd LOVE that since they can be kinda fussy to get started -- the seedling s are soo tiny! I've got lots of Roma tomatoes too, but they're just starting to get ripe. I am so eager to re-stock my tomato sauce, stewed tomatoes, salsa, and chopped tomatoes supply!

Your garden looks great! I struggled with onions this year too! I miss my Michigan cherries. :-(

What was it with the onions!?! My seed starts of green onions for this Fall are barely coming up from 2020 seed. I don't know what to think. . . . At least the walking onion sets I planted in a tub are doing well.

Well, had to muddle thru Bidens ads to get here. All worn out now... Garden looks good. I see that all is well. Good to see and hear your voice again..

Accckkk -- Joe Biden ads on my vids. . . . Grrrrreat. Sorry 'bout that. Good to see a comment from you again too!! When I go on my winter sabbatical, I think youtube "erases" me to many of my subs. I notice a lot of people will suddenly rediscover my videos mid-summer, or say something like, "I'm so glad you're making videos again" as though I've been away for longer than just a few months. Oh well. Maybe this year I'll try to keep going all winter. . . .

We tried wheat...didn't🙄 work here in ohio either

Last time, I used -- you guess it -- old seed. This time, I have fresh seed. Crossing fingers we A) get around to it and B) it grows well. I saw someone on youtube using an old food processor to thresh wheat and it worked beautifully, so if we have a decent stand of wheat next year, I'll be stalking the thrift stores for a 2nd hand food processor, I mean wheat thresher.
