Some Old Lincoln Flux Core Welders Cannot Be Converted To A MIG Welder! Here's Which Ones...

Hello everyone, this is Chris from Outbound Terrain. I got this older Lincoln flux core welder at a really good price, thinking that I could save some money and convert it to MIG. I’m working on some thinner sheet metal and body panels on my 86’ 4runner. A MIG welder works much better for the application, and the welding I will be doing. A lot of the older Lincoln welders CAN be converted to MIG with some extra parts that are easy to find. Unfortunately, this model of Lincoln CANNOT be converted to a MIG welder. This is short vid about how I tried, and failed at this. I thought it would help some of you out there, so you don’t make the same mistake! I WILL give you the model numbers of the non-convertible Lincoln welders, so you know which ones to get.

The leads for your trigger run off of DC. The solenoid for those kits also run off DC. You can piggyback the hot and ground for the trigger to the solenoid with a relay. Check and see what the voltage is whether it is 12 or 24 and buy the appropriate relay and then run the wires from the relay with a piggyback for your hot to the solenoid. So long as the cable has a gas connection you can still do it and if it doesn't you can always upgrade your cable and gun for gas pass that it's just a hose. It's not rocket science and it's not a plug and play but polarity doesn't matter so it makes it really easy. You pull the trigger that completes the circuit, that flips the relay that engages your gas solenoid. If it's 12 volt I promise you you have a 12 volt relay somewhere in that garage 🤣. The board that is compatible just as the same thing when the circuit's complete it trips the solenoid You're just doing it with a relay. Don't overthink it you got this All you need is a multimeter some spade connections a couple pieces of short wire and you're in business. Never accept defeat 😁👍.

Have you done this ? Or seen anyone who has done this and documented or any reference I could look at ? I have an opportunity to get one of the conversion kits for a good price and if it’s logically feasible and worthwhile I’d do it I have experience soldering and fixed boards etc but I’m a parts swapper at best lol ik my limits and def consider myself an amateur but from what you described it doesn’t sound too difficult but ik I don’t know shit so I’d want to know what all that’d entail before I even consider that as an option and I can’t seem to find any information regarding the process you just described but I’d love to know more if you wouldn’t mind? I thought about looking for an old board out of a broken unit that already has the pins or spots on the board for me to connect to Any help is greatly appreciated Thanks for your time bsrcat1. -Jeff

U can convert that welder to mig I just did see the fan wires they plug in to 6 pin plug that's where the gas solenoid hit me up I can help u

Really, didn't know that...so you tap the solenoid into one of the pins on the plug? Hey if you have info on how to do that much appreciated! Chris

Yeah the fan plugs in to a 6 pin plug but only 3 of the pins are being used in a flex welder on gas welder use pin 3 and pin 4 for the gas solenoid and swap ur ground and power over on ur gun next to the spull of wire

Since it has the gas line and everything else, perhaps just get the signal from the board and use an external relay to power the solenoid. I don't see why it shouldn't work.

Why couldn’t you just splice the gas solenoid into the wires from the wire solenoid?!

I was going to say the same thing. Grab a multimeter and test the plug for your power while the button on the gun is being depressed and you should be able use those pins! But you already got it 👍
