Honestly I'd love to see a gate on the interior zoo entrance so that once somebody gets in the alarm is going off and they can't get to the animals in time.
Yes I agree! The alarm company is at FAULT for not reporting the break-in to LEO'S & business owners, Ed & Emily! If the alarm company had done the job they are being paid for then this thief may have been quickly arrested!!
Definitely this! As soon as the alarm was triggered they should have called you guys. If they did the police might have actually been able to respond in time and catch the guy!
I second this and also the contractor should at least offer his work free because there’s a high possibility you wouldn’t have had to pay out if they’d done their job in a timely manner.
1000000000000000% agree with everyone on this! I hope they are able to get money off of these guys! It’s sad such a small business got hit so hard due to two different companies negligence. The security company and the contractor are mainly at fault here (except the actual robber🤣)
I’ve got a feeling this was “just” someone desperate for quick cash as they didn’t even consider the zoo which is good. Maybe they didn’t realise there was one lol! Also why didn’t the door peeps do these security things first rather than now? Then you wouldn’t have had to pay out. Contractors, door people and security people are all liable
I work at a security company. It depends what they wanted when they set up the account in the monitoring. If emily and Ed said to only action 2 alarms (zones) come through then the monitoring company does that. Most company's that I have seen at my job have that set up on their account and there has been instances where companies have been broken into and only one zone come through so we don't call them plus if there isn't enough coverage like say 1 PIR in that big room can be a huge problem. They should have a MRS on that door or a break glass detector as well, and PIRs in all corners of that room.
I'm so sorry people did this to you, guys. This is nothing, but I wanted to help even if it's a little. Hope you can recover from it soon. Thank you for all the happy (and even the not so happy) times, it's always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Man Ed is normally such a cheery guy, ive never seen him look as angry as he did in this video. Stay safe y'all, glad that nobody was hurt at the end of the day.
@@gen.arnavpoe4633 highly unlikely. The cash boxes are visible and the door clearly wasn't up for the task. It's highly like in the guy just looked through the window saw the cash boxes. Then he jimmyed the doors.
Hearing Emily apologize to the isopods almost made me cry. It's just so violating to have someone treat your place like that...especially a zoo you've put everything into.
OMG same like they put soooooooo much time into buying the place, renovating it, making the enclosures, nd putting the animals in is just to much time for some jerk to just spend like 5 minutes breaking in and stealing from them.
@@SnakeDiscovery I am really sorry that happened to you, but I was going to donate 1500 Hong Kong dollars to help you, but my mum said no, so I am deeply. Sorry that I cannot help you although this has been a long time ago
I'm sorry this happened to you guys. Glad the animals and staff are all safe. Hope to help you guys get some more stuff to keep you all safe and prevent more break-ins
Being robbed is traumatic. Even if you weren't there at the time. It's an invasion of privacy and it destroys your sense of safety. What you thought was a safe space has been violated. It's ok to be upset and to feel violated over what happened. It's completely normal. From what I can tell by watching your more recent videos you seem to have recovered pretty well, but if you find that you are still nervous on occasion just know that what you are feeling is normal and it's ok to feel that way. I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm really happy that no animals were harmed as well (aside from the poor isopods who probably got a bit traumatized from being dropped.)
I'm sorry guys. My family's business was robbed not too long ago. It is an incredibly violating feeling. Especially when it is something you have worked to build from the ground up. Sending you positive vibes ❤
The feeling of being robbed in your own place is awful, we dont have a business but my grandparents house was robbed years ago. My grandma accidentally left a pot of beans on the stove and they started burning. Someone must have heard the fire alarm and broke in, and they turned off the stove and put the pot in the sink.. And then robbed the house. Thanks.. i guess.
I wish people would realize not to rob small businesses. If you are going to steal, steal from someone who you know won't care, which means steal from a big company like Walmart. I'm not trying to promote stealing in general, but at least be moral about it. And besides, the employees won't care.
Definitely say it was an inside job... Most retail stores the cash in safes or bank drops. They had to know what was in there. Plus the fact none of the expensive animals around the place ...
While I don't know much about security, I'd be interested to hear why they didn't contact either of them, especially if they're actively paying for that service. They're supposed to help keep the adorable danger noodles safe. I'm super glad all of the animals are safe, and nobody was physically harmed.
Oh my gosh, you are too generous with this!! You certainly didn't have to send that donation! I promise it'll go straight to the animals. ❤️ Hope to meet you someday!
@Snake Discovery We have met, at the grand opening 🥰 I was the last one in line when there were some tech issues so you guys had to step away for a moment lol!! I'm happy to donate 🩷
I'm sorry this happened to you guys, yes though you can't trust everyone sadly. also, I noticed your locks on those doors at 10:10 are locks that can be broken by bolt cutters I would suggest you replace those with some closed shackle padlocks as I've had to use those due to break-ins at a storage facility. I know you got lots of protection but it's just an added bandage just to be sure (also please do consider doing the same to the other end to prevent any intruders from getting in) much love to you all.
I hope someone contacts them about a thorough security audit. They've got some points of weakness that I wouldn't want to point out in comments that are concerning, even now.
Closed shackle locks are a waste of money since most of them are easily picked in a small amount of time. The lock is just to slow down or deter a potential thief into looking for an easier target. Also if you put a closed shackle on it then a thief will just cut the metal on the gate holding the lock. Better to replace a cut lock than it is to have to get a whole new gate
Oh no! I didn't know that happened! Public service announcement, yall: if you lose your keys, get every matching lock changed just in case. Crazy people be everywhere 😢 (I am in no way blaming her or Ed!)
It is a major blessing none of the animals were stolen/harmed. Cash boxes are replaceable; lives are not. I hope the thief is brought to justice, but in the world as it is, it can only be a hope.
Hi Ed and Emily, You guys have helped me so much with my fear of snakes! What happened to you was just awful! I know it’s not much, but I thought I could at least give you something to go towards losses.
@Violet Beettam-Johnson We thought she was a boy at first, If we knew she was a boy we would have named her Sundae. She's a super fire ball morph and I love her. And people seem to love her name. Lmao
I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you guys. I just got a chance to watch this video. I'm a long time fan and I hope this helps a little. I know it's not a lot (I'm a teacher so I have less income in the summer) but I wanted to show my support for you guys in some way. You guys are an inspiration and you always manage to help me feel better when I'm down. Especially when I lost my rescue beardie Asteria back in October. I love you guys and keep up the good work! You are so amazing and important and I hope you aren't let down by humanity in this way again. Much love and happy vibes! 💚🖤🐊🐍🐢🦎🐸🦜
I'm so sorry this happened to you guys. If I can make a suggestion, you can invest in a drop safe, one that can be bolted into the ground so it can't be easily taken. Additionally, if you are using any padlocks that are from Master Lock, I highly recommend changing them. Master Lock's products are very easy to break with minimal effort. I can't give any good recommendations for an alternative, since it's really something you should research yourself, but I have had good experience with Squire Locks in the past. Again, I'm sorry this happened to you, but I am so grateful none of the animals were harmed.
You can usually open Master Locks with keys from other Master Locks. With how common they are, you don't even need a lockpicking kit (though if you have one, they're easy to pick)
@@prairiepanda Actually, at least on the base models, you don't even need a key. There is a built-in emergency release that can be exploited without any tools at all.
I was an ametur lockpicker, practiced on old discarded locks from public storage, master locks are terrible, and brinks was the only one that gave me a challenge.
I am so sorry - Emily and Ed, you have brought so much happiness, kindness, and education to so many people, I couldn't think of any two people less deserving of such an act. I don't have any reptiles or live locally to support the store/zoo directly, but I hope this thanks puts a tiny dent in the damage that was done. I greatly appreciate all the work you both do to be role models of kindness and curiosity - it may not always seem like it - but it is making a positive impact and reducing the influence of bad people in this world.
Was thinking maybe a large python got out and trashed the place, sadly it was a human (use to term loosely). Shame there's people that can't leave things that don't belong to them alone.
I have been a fan since you first got rex. I know this is probably very late, but I still wanted to send this, I have also seen many people suggest suing the security company because they are at fault for not notifying you. Again, I might be too late with all of this but I hope this helps.
Oh my gosh you are so thoughtful! This was incredibly generous and you didn't have to do it. Thank you so much- it'll go right to our animals I promise!
@@DeterminismisFreedom Nah the door is in the back, you can’t see it from the street at all. So if he was walking by he wouldn’t have chosen this building when there are much more obvious targets. It doesn’t even really look like a store from the front, just a zoo.
@@DeterminismisFreedom they have tons of animals worth good money, it’s not insane to think someone would target them to break in and steal them to make money. Maybe not gangs, but I could see some crazy/greedy person learning how much some of them are worth and purposefully breaking into their facility for them.
My husband and I were held up at knife point in our place of business several years ago. It’s ok to feel violated, and uncomfortable. It’s ok to take some time being extra careful.. I’m so sorry this happened to you!
The security camera roast comments of the perpetrator are gold! And he definitely deserves it. I’m so sorry that this happened to you guys 💔 Please stay safe
I'll suggest having a money box that you put your money in and take home and put a sign outside saying "no cash let in this premades overnight". Should help detour some of the low life's from thinking your gift shop is not a easy mark
I must say, it's a brave mouse that lives in a snake store. Also, condolences on the break in. I know how bad it feels when something like that happens and I'm glad to see that you're managing this well.
@@shanebryant6478 That mouse is just shaking dat booty in front of the snakes and just cleans his whiskers there while the snakes stew in their frustration. XD
From now on, make sure to ALWAYS remove the cash drawers from the tills, put them in the office and lock the office overnight. ALSO, at the end of the night, once the cash drawers are removed from the tills, leave the tills cracked open with nothing in there (so if ANYTHING happens again), the robber will see theres nothing in there and it will help deter possible future "rotten sperm". You guys deserve so much better than that for all you do for your community and for the animals.
I'm sorry this happened, but lessons learned, and the best part is nobody and other than the isopods being tossed on the floor, no animals were harmed or stolen
I’m super new to your channel and I love it! I hope my donation helps you through hard times, I know this unfortunate experience happened a few months ago, so sorry for the late donation!❤
Hope this helps, been following you two for a few years now, i learn a lot from you about reptiles and other things discussed on this channel. This community is great and i hope everything gets over with. Robberies are devestating, hopefully the person gets caught. Big hugs from norway
You guys handled this so well, and are still able to stay positive. You all were able to learn from a situation likes this, and that is amazing and a great way to make the best of things. I hope you all are doing fine ❤
That little kiddo checking in on everything at 10:00 was great. So sorry this happened to you guys, this is awful. I'm so glad your animals were all unharmed and alright
I apologize for the loss in theft. Unfortunately, it is happening everywhere, especially in Chicago, from where I live. I hope, my small donation can help. Both of you are the best! Please continue the hard work and care for your animals!
I hate using my phone so much. One reason is that I can't tell what the other person is really thinking, what their expression is etc. And as I struggle understanding social cues it's intimidating and nerve-wracking at times just trying to communicate as my brain trips over words or struggles to understand something the other person is saying. Let me email/text though and I'm a totally different person! It gives me time to write and proof read a response, so I'm way more comfortable with it. :D
texting and phone anxiety. it's a real thing! if you know, you know. it sucks, btw. it makes me nauseous, and anxious to the point where i just can't and i have to put the phone down.
Idk man, at least you can see them and learn their body language. Kind of hard to do that with a phone, since it isn’t always the same person, and you never know what’ll be on the other end.
I totally understand where she is coming from. Yesterday I was fairly cool even when a black widow almost made me freehandle her while trying to keep her from running under my bed. The phone ringing an hour later though sent my anxiety through the roof. Of course I didn't answer it, but just the potential of having to talk on a phone was 10x more threatening.
Hi there, the accordeon gate should be installed on the inside of your business in order to delay the thiefs from the moment the alarm counter starts when the door gets busted/opened. It will give the thieves less time before the alarm starts. The way its installed right now, once the thief cuts through the gate, and bust the door, they still have as much time to rob the place before the alarm starts.
You should consider moving all your left over cash from the tills into a hidden safe at night!! Better yet, the whole cash boxes… I’m sorry this happened to you all
Although that's the right thing to do, if the cash boxes wasn't there it could have been worse, the person broke in, got what they wanted a left, if there was no cash boxes to take they would have started looking at other things, possibly even live animals.
So sorry this happened to you guys 😞 Sending lots of love to you both, those poor isopods that got disturbed and to your staff. And healing vibes to you all and to the individual that was offline enough to commit this crime. 🙏🏼
@@cured_bacon647 how do you know it's fake? Do you have proof? And if it is fake why would Emily and Ed. Two people who have spent 3, almost 4 years working on their store, purposely fake a break in for some views? (Not to mention the cost of the damages is a lot so there's no way they would fake something like that for some views). You clearly don't know who snake discovery is if you think they faked this. Yes they didn't have many security measures but that's because their store has been open for almost 2 years and no one has broken in, so you know when your store that you spent almost 4 years of your life on doesn't get broken into for almost 2 years you would think that it's never gonna happen or it's not gonna be huge. Now the stuff the dude stole was probably quite a bit (considering it was a money box and had money in it) so it was kinda big but still. And it's also their contractors fault for not putting in the gate and fence. Go research on stuff before you comment dumb things like this, also don't comment on a person's break in story if you don't know who they are. Especially if they're someone who would never fake something like this 🥰😘
I know this had happened a week (or maybe a few weeks ago) but I am so SO sorry you guys had to deal with this. I’m thankful none of the animals were hurt (especially the tortoises). Just as a heads up if you haven’t done it already, you may need to contact the Records department of the PD that took the report; make sure you have the case number (if you don’t, provide your name, DOB, and date of the incident, they should be able to locate it on that) and ask them what you’ll need to do to request a copy of the report for insurance purposes. The PD I work for usually requires you come in person with your driver’s license and cash or a check to pay for the report (though depending on your PD you may not need to pay for it if you’re the victim, but double check with the Records unit!), but police departments differ in requirements. Prayers to you guys!
A small donation for you guys to help recovering. I'm really glad the animals are safe and not harmed during that, and that y'all are safe as well. Dude was a huge jerk. I hope y'all recover soon. Cheers :)
I’m so sorry this happened to y’all Some good notes based on other comments: +The thief may have checked out the store earlier that day. +If you guys have a partial fence around the store, maybe complete the fence (do a fence fundraiser!) the gate could be closed at night (they would need to scale and are more likely to be seen) and you could have a lot of motion sensor flood lights. +You could add some random light timers in the front shop? The lights would turn on randomly 2-3 times a night for only 10 or so mins, and a random thief may not want to risk it. +if you need to keep cash overnight have it in a secure, bolted down safe. Maybe even cover the safe at night to make it seem like another animal enclosure. +Also I know this is an unpleasant thought, but please make sure you and your staff are never alone when leaving the building, especially at night! And please make sure each of you has some sort of defense tool, mace, tactical pen, pocket knife etc.
You could always put plants in front if you really want to hide the gates, make them more like the Zoo! Sorry this happened to you guys, glad all the animals are safe!
Ugh this is disgusting. I’m so glad everyone was safe and unharmed including the animals. Hope you caught the guy tho ❤ sending love to Ed, Emily, rex and the crew!
As someone who lives in a very high crime area and country (South Africa) I'm sorry this happened. It's traumatic and violating, please see a therapist if you can, it might not seem like a big deal but it can REALLY haunt you and cause PTSD, so chatting with someone about it is really helpful. A tip (again as someone who lives in a super high crime area): infra red beams set before entry points are a great deterrent as they trigger the alarm before the robber can even start attempting entry. A lot of times they give up because it cuts into their time badly as armed response will get there faster than they can gain entry and steal. Unfortunately when there's crime in your area, the strategy to make your place the least appealing to break into is the most effective one, as many of these people are simply desperate and looking for an easy target. Times are tough and the pandemic has made the world much poorer. It still doesn't make being robbed any less traumatic though. Best of luck.
Agreed. Definitely set up an appointment or three. Letting Rex roam at night might be a good deterrent too, 'cause you know she'd come investigate any sort of noise. 😂
I mean, they live in Minnesota, a state which, despite having nothing in it, has one of the highest crime rates. Security measures should have *already* been in place. The only people who leave their money out on the counter overnight are the ones who WANT to be robbed. The money should have been in the back, behind a locked door, in a hard to find and open wall installed safe.
Yours are words of wisdom, from an individual "in the know". Your compassion is SUPER encouraging, though! I hope your own life has joy and fulfillment, to match or exceed your compassion ❤🥹❤ Agapé 303
I'm so sorry this happened. It's so violating to have your place broken into. I hope you talked to your security provider about why you weren't called out for the alarm?! This is a traumatic event, please take time to process and heal from this. Take care!
I know it won’t compensate everything that was stolen, but I will be buying a t-shirt to help cover the loss. Love your channel and so happy the animals were safe!
this is the most donations I’ve ever seen in a comment section, I wish I could donate as well. what a beautiful and supportive community. I’m so so sorry this happened to you guys, you’re so loved)):
Even though im a lurker, not sub, I watched everything from the begining of your videos and im devastated this happened to you. I honestly would cry if this happened to me. I hope that everything goes well with you guys much love!
I don't have much to give, but ik every bit helps and u guys are amazing people who deserve love and admiration for all u do! Not the disrespect and violation of being robbed!!
When I saw this title I was immediately terrified for the animals in the zoo. I'm sure this was a devastating experience. But you're right, it could have been so much worse. Money and things are replaceable, your precious animals are a different story. I'm glad it was just a brute force break-in and run. I hope you are able to get the peace and support you need after this.
Wow I’m so sorry you guys are having to go through this. Every pet store I have worked for has been robbed at least once. The last guy got caught because the birds he stole still had their numbered leg bands on. I hope you guys get justice ❤
I can't donate a lot, which I why I'm not on patron, but I hope this can help a little bit. You're all super amazing and kind and I don't know how long ago this happened, but I hope this can help
I just can't imagine how someone targets a zoo to rob? Like what the hell? I was worried it was a targeted attack and someone had stolen animals, so like Emily said- big relief that the animals were all safe and this was just seemingly a random smash and grab. Just mind boggling but glad you're all safe and that things weren't worse
There are garbage people in this world. It's hard to empathize with such people, but some people really only care about themselves, and see other people only as obstacles in the way of their own happiness. If asked, they'd ask you why they should care about anyone besides themselves.
It’s 99% likely an addict. They’re usually the ones who do ‘random’ smash and grabs like this. If it was a sober burglar it’s very unlikely they’d target a speciality store like this, and if they did they would’ve researched to know they could try to steal some pricy animals to resell. I’m so relieved it was just a messy junky who was too stupid to try to take any of the animals. Can’t imagine how devastating that would be for the SD family 😣. I’m glad they’re getting the entrance extra secured, and maybe they can train the mouse as security haha.
So, sorry so this happened! People can be such....son o' a-bees. I'm so glad no little guys got hurt (except the isopods getting a bump on their heads)!!! An old place I used to work at kept the cash drawers open and empty when the store was closed so if anyone broke in, they'd know there wasn't anything to take. Much love to you guys!
@@gapnap they're very busy! I fully understand this and no acknowledgment needed here! Emily is a wonderful creator and animal ambassador, TRULY dedicated and *sincere* in her cause! And if you visit Snake Discovery and she's on site, she's likely out amongst visitors, teaching and getting to meet her followers! I seriously cannot speak highly enough of her, and I'm only sorry I can't give more!
Glad you improved security. You may want to meet with the local fire department to discuss an emergency plan in case of fire since you have live animals.
As soon as I saw the link for this video my immediate thought was “Oh no are all the animals safe?” I am so glad that it was just cash drawers that were taken. And that your tortoises didn’t get curious and leave the building. I’m so sorry that this happened to you guys. But I’m glad that everyone {staff and animals) is safe.
I wish I also had something to give, but it’s so cool that this is one of the most donation filled comment sections I’ve ever seen. You guys deserve it.
This is awful. Im so sorry that you're going through this. Also, follow up with the alarm company. There's usually a policy in place if they fail to alert. On a goofy note, you could weaponize the tortoise shells
Seeing the hurt in Emilys eyes makes my heart so sad ... Snake discovery is a happy place. Shame in that theif who stole that from Emily and Ed and the whole snake 🐍 discovery staff!!!! May you find that safe feeling again
I am a veterinarian and in my practice ( we live on the green calm Land)was broken in. there is virtually no cash because everyone pays by card. things were stolen from one of the two idiots ,but above all things were broken. But when the other idiot came back and opened the hind door in my prcatice, they stood in the bedroom of my 4 Kangals, 2 capatins and one huge Cane Corso Mix . They are rescues with special needs and lived on the streets for years. They all do not want to live in the house and take care of the back of the yard and have this room worh dogbeds to rest if they want ro sleep. that was a very stupid idea. only one of the idiots escaped. the other had luck to come out alive just because i heard my dogs bark and I safed his life by stopping them. And The bad thing is that one of my dogs now have a partial muzzle obligation. Thanks to this 2 idiots! Your parents are sure proud of you. .
I'm so sorry this happened to you all. I'm very relieved that the animals are ok, even if the arthropods had an unexpected flight... Much love to everyone a SD!
I'm glad that everyone is ok! I'm so sorry you guys experienced this. Someone breaking into my apartment was one of the most traumatic things that has happened to me. I hope you all feel better.
Oh, team... There is nothing worse than knowing someone violated your space. The feeling you get takes so long to shake off. The great news is, they were after only one thing - and they left everyone alone. So sorry. :(
Yeah. I had my bicycle lock cut once (at my house!) and the deep territorial fury I felt then suprised me. Cant imagine how a break in to the building your pets are in must feel.
Emily and Ed I’m so sorry that someone broke into your business and took your hard earned money for the animals and your employees. That was a really wrong thing that person did. I’m glad animals are employees and everybody is safe.❤
Phone-phobia is a real thing. I have it. It sucks. I joke, "Instant moron, just add need to use phone," and I feel like a total rubber-lipped, mush-brained dope. Seriously, my brain tends to go blank when people ask me questions when I'm on a phone and I need to ask for info, or get needed appointments taken care of. I fuggin' *HATE* it. Social anxiety of this form is *SO* frustrating.
I'm so sorry this happened to you guys!! But luckily like you said it was only money and some damaged property and no animals were harmed or taken. I hope this helps you recover from this terrible experience. Cheers!!
Im so sorry that happened to you all! I hope you're doing better now since it's been nearly a year i still think back on this like "I wonder how that guy would've reacted to finding an alligator staring him down if he went into the zoo."
Hope this helps cover any cost the insurance fights you on. Of all the people I guess I'm more angry because I know you, kinda. At least he didn't take the animals, the exotics trade can be nasty like that. People steal entire birds! No idea how but it's nuts.
Im really sorry this happened to y'all! Im glad y'all have been reinforcing the facility and that animals were all okay. Something y'all didn't touch on much, your alarm company didn't call you? I hope that got dealt with 😅
I’m really sorry this happened to you, people these days just don’t understand how there actions affect others. I wish you all the very best and that this will never happen again. You guys are truly the best RU-vidrs ever. ❤
can we just take a moment to appreciate how clam and stable they were throughout the video 👏 also the part where emily was afraid of phone calls and never wanted to pick up another one couldn’t be more relatable 😂
