Guys I do not understand this. Why are Intel Macs still so expensive? We've talked a lot about why its not a great idea to buy a used Intel Mac right now because of the high prices but I had always said that once prices drop things will be back to normal, but: They haven't!?!?! Wat

Also people are creatures of habit... they know that Intel has a long running good reputation so they stick with that, or maybe it's due to applications they can't risk running crappy under Rosetta 2 on an M family Mac.

For the cheaper (older) models it may just be that buyers are on a tight budget and have nowhere else to go. For the newer models priced close to M1 macs, I don't think most people who are buying fully appreciate that the M1 air is superior in almost every way to any intel 13 inch macbook pro. To most people it is a trueism that Air < Pro.

There’s one thing that an Intel Mac holds over an M1 Mac, and that’s the ability to run Windows natively, I do still need to be able to dual boot, so I’m running a current i7 13” (16gb ram, 1tb SSD)… it’s the only single machine that covers all bases for me right now, it’s just the price that hurts!
@wonabe
@wonabe 3 года назад
not only that, but 32gb ram option is also a great benefit to workflow. I often see 22-25Gb ram usage on iMac, and my 8gb M1 freezes in different use cases, not mentioning inability to dual boot windows. And yes MBP2016 with i5 and 8GB was a turtle compared to M1 air, yet it's not a Ferrari. but my SSD has 25GB free left(256GB version) and once we upgrade to 512Gb and 16GB version and M1 MPB(Air throttles a lot in the sun, above 30c outside temperature) iMac 2020 with i5 is still better deal, since Ram is a cheap upgrade, 5K display is very good, GPU is upgradable via thunderbolt external extension and Windows would start on that machine and run any software you might imagine apart from Linux afaik. Unless you need portable Mac I vote for iMac. Then I would vote for i9 intel (used) and if you need a new one with warranty on tight budget - go for M1 Air, but 16gb version, and struggle with low SSD capacity, since $1.5 for every GB of data is not cheap for what you get. For those who wonder: Sketchup works, Archicad works, 11.2.3 is last MacOs that runs iPad apps like instagram, TT and such. Most iPad apps like office etc are horrible. Yes it renders video great. Mac mini M1 is a great deal, but just a display that is any good will cost you over $250, mouse would be $50, keyboard $40, cables etc... Get an Air M1 and iPad later for sidecar =)

At the end of the day its up to the user and their needs to decide what’s worth it for what they do, and in these circumstances it could go either way. Unless you are a heavy gamer,I see little to no issues for an everyday user that would arise a solution doesn't exist for. Oh you’re so young. All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again. This happened last couple of transitions because a lot professional software isn’t or wasn’t new chip ready. So, it’s probably not consumers that are buying Intel Macs. It’s businesses or people with professional needs. The technically true doesn’t matter at this stage of the transition. Until all pro software for Macs is on ARM and is super stable then the Intel Macs remain valuable and in fact more valuable because business have more money to spend. It makes perfect sense to us Gen X’ers and baby boomers that have been working with Macs since the 90s. You’ve also got people that aren’t ready to give up the ability to run Windows either natively or on VMware in a pro environment. I’m one of those people. You’re also thinking in self-employed terms instead of corporate terms. Traditionally bigger businesses like to use tech that has been proven for at least three years.

Same goes for people around the stage. Plugins won't run, quite a lot of hardware doesn't have drivers yet, Audinate has only an estimate for the arrival of Dante Virtual Soundcard for M1 Macs. Also being able to have only one external monitor is a bummer. Also, Apple pretty much turned their back to professional users somewhere ten years ago, when their stuff got so thin that there is no room for an Ethernet port. We don't give a flying fück about the thinnest Macbook ever. We need a wired, LOCKING network connector that if moved accidentally 4 inches, still keeps outputting.

Probably because power users recognize that having flexibility in OS is valuable. Being able to run MacOS AND Windows or Linux (not in a VM) has a value to a lot of users. Apple removed boot camp and has already said that M1 compatibility with other OSes is on the OS dev to figure out. And with the new privacy concerns around Apple, having the build quality and polish of a Mac but with an OS that respects their privacy is also valuable to a lot of people. Not every Apple user is exclusive to the Apple ecosystem. Assuming we are all only interested in MacOS performance per dollar is missing a big chunk of the story.

From my experience in selling used laptops (X Thinkpads mostly), I see time and time again a transition of a good from being a high-tech item to being a utility. When you consider a new laptop, you normally put a lot of consideration into peak CPU & GPU output, RAM clocks, SSD speeds, design. As the item ages, these become less relevant and other things start to matter, e.g. if it has a durable body, if the keyboard is pleasant, if the screen is good. Battery is likely degraded at this point and the peak CPU & GPU output does not matter any longer - you're not hoping for AAA gaming, but rather a decent browsing experience and office work. After this long intro, why IMO Apple laptops age well (arguably as Thinkpads do). First of all - aluminium body is hard to beat. It gets scratched and gets bumped, but you cannot crack it, so aesthetically most of the laptops look really well. The Mac screens have been great if not the best since forever. Not many screens out there today reach retina quality and screens rarely degrade over the years (you can get pressure marks on the IPS panels if you're clumsy, but Mac ones last well). The Mac keyboards have been great, with the butterfly keyboards still great, but terribly unreliable (no idea why people buy those). Lastly - the touchpad is the best one probably of all the laptops. Pack all of these together and you get a competitive laptop in the $400-600 range. Buying a plastic piece of 💩with the 11 gen Intel or 2015 MBP - i'd definitely pick the 2015 MBP. To answer the obvious question - how do old Macs get close in terms of pricing of the new M1 ones, i'd say that the issue is not with old Macs being overpriced, but rather with the new Macs being under-priced. The value of M1 MBA should be around $1300. What Apple seems to be doing is having an aggressive pricing to increase its marketshare using their technological edge. I think it's great for the consumers and for breaking the Intel hold over the laptop industry. At the same time, i hope the competition does not go bankrupt, like in case of the Android phone manufacturers. This is unless we are ok with $2k MBAs...

Nice job! To your question regarding value... Value has little to do with price, only the market. Due to Covid the "APPLE" market has changed (for the good) and people are working from home and being plugged into zoom calls all day. 16g of ram, a solid ssd and 2 extra monitors is all they need. they don't edit or game so saving $500 on fantastic used laptop is a value. I switched 2 years ago to a 2014 Mac Book Pro 15 (for $400) after 5 years of intel. The difference is amazing. I think for a lot of people it’s that the limitations of M1 in its current incarnation don’t suit what they are trying to accomplish. Need BootCamp? Sorry. Need stock support for multiple screens? Sucks to suck. Need more than two ports? Joke’s on you. Need all software to work except (lol) cross compatibility with iPadOS apps? Call Tim Apple to cry about it. These are real limitations that a blazing fast CPU can’t really fix. I have a 2020 27 inch IMac and an M1 MacBook Pro, and besides almost never noticing the difference in speed, there are many tasks that just require ports and intel chips at this point. I couldn’t even consider selling that IMac (which I love, btw). Another thing is that outdated Apple products are still Apple, and that will always command a price.

M1 Macs still have issues with multiple screens and there are still some compatibility issues for certain niche stuff... sad fact is, for some people, they still need the Intel Mac... So prices won't drop... over all better doesn't mean it's better in every single issues. From businesses to certain niches. You need to remember that some people might have needs that you don't and maybe the M1 isn't ready to deal with that specific market yet. I see it this way: 1) As long as people want MacOS but depend on x86 they can continue to charge a premium. Think about businesses with highly specialised applications. 2) If they were to offsell their Intel portfolio, the attractive price would dampen some of their M1 sales which of course is their bigger focus. In other words by keeping older stuff expensive, people will naturally choose the newer and better product in the same or lower price range. 3) Intel Macs are still great for advanced users who want pretty looking devices but run multiple Operating Systems on it like Linux.
@firaspop

Yo Luke, I think the main reason why prices aren't going down is mainly the supply and demand chain. M1 macs are there in the store so they don't really need to be included. But the quantity of Intel macs on used market is still so huge that the small number of M1 macs won't budge the prices. Because after all prices are decided not by performance but by value. The day the market has 1 intel Mac for every 5 M1 macs , the prices will adjust. Until then the majority will decide the price, if Intel macs are selling for 1k$ , they'll keep selling for 1k$.

one of the things to consider is that intel macs will not be officially offered from apple in less than two years. this adds to the idea of scarcity, which in conjunction with the social status brand awareness won’t allow for the prices to drop until they become fully unusable. also as mentioned by others, apple has apparently done a poor job of advertising the performance improvement of the new chip and they intentionally hide the GHz speed for secrecy, so people aren’t directly shown the difference.
