I use non-chlorinated brake cleaner, so that particular by product is not an issue. The acetone in non-chlorinated brake cleaner does produce harmful byproducts when heated, but not anything that a properly ventilated area doesn’t remedy - most of the TIG welders I know prep with straight acetone. What do you use to prep your surfaces?

I didn’t know why, but Walter always told me to get non-chlorinated, so that’s all we ever have in the shop. You are absolutely right about double checking, because I’ve accidentally bought a can in the past and had others bring it in while working on projects.

@@MischiefMakerTV Hollie - Walter probably was aware of the dangers. Eastwood and other welding suppliers warn of the danger from using chlorinated cleaners during welding prep. They are cheaper which is why many buy them but the risk can be quite expensive to deal with afterwards. History buffs will be aware of how the use of those two gases were classified as War Crimes after they were used on battlefields in Europe during the First World War. You really don't want to accidentally release in your shop gases that killed almost 100,000 people during the First World War. Best!

I have to disagree. The relationship between my track bar and drag link are as close as they will ever get (and much better than most). They are parallel to each other, but the drag link is about 3” longer. Working with a dual shock setup where the coilover and bypass are mounted on either side of the axle tube requires some creative problem solving. It limits how close you can get to the knuckle with the axle side track bar bracket, so you have to move the frame side bracket well outside of the frame to maintain length. The issue you see here is the result of having a frame chop bumper as there is none of the original rigid crossmembers that originally held the frame in place. I do have a fix for it, but this tube crossmember should do for now. The frame on this vehicle was never designed to see the forces it sees out on the trail. Some flex is good, but with everything we have removed especially at the front and rear of the frame, it is seeing a lot more than it can handle.

This period of my life is not necessarily meant to be exciting. It was great living on the road and wheeling new places all the time, but I also realized that MM (as awesome as he is) is not the right tool for every job. When I committed to getting the shop, I also committed to building (what I believe to be) the right tools. Which is where Nessie and the Scottish Hammer come in…I also decided that I’d do a little good for the Jeep community, which is why I have built giveaway vehicles for TL for the past 3 years. If I hadn’t hurt myself last year, I’d probably be a solid 4-5 months further into my plans, but the plan was to have both of my personal projects completed by the end of this year. I hear ya & I wish shop time was as exciting to watch as wheeling, but I’m working toward some bigger goals and this is just what that looks like right now. Thanks for hanging in there! 😊
