My Somogear is still going strong! 1500+ rounds so far, and accurate to 300m. Check out my next video comparing the Somogear PEQ15 vs NGAL! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZRNb-wpwlvw.html
I wish they would make a higher end one of these, tbh. A "real one" runs $1800 from what I find. My Holosun unit was $1000. I would gladly pay them an extra $100 or $150 for an "ultra durable" one with a diffuser cap from the factory and better general construction. Anyone tried reaching out to them?
Similar situation happened to me in Afghanistan. We had set up a perimeter around our mortar position, with some razor wire and fighting positions dug. early in the morning spotted a figure walking up the hill toward us. it was a kid about 12-14 years old just curious about what was happening on the hill. We had no idea if he was armed/suicide bomber so we started shouting and waving at him, but he couldn't hear/see us. I decided to shine my PEQ15 red laser across his face and that worked immediately. he turned around and ran home. That PEQ15 saved his life.
My buddy did the safe thing at night time check points in Iraq. As soon as the laser illuminated the inside of the vehicle they decided, it was a good idea to obey the sign and slowing down.
The simplest zero method I discovered, then ultimately found out was an actual zero method was to aim up at the sky, and converge your laser to your red dot. Its like a hybrid of a parallel and converging zero, but it converges WELL past your engagement range. And when I shot to confirm, that round landed just about exactly where the laser was. The mound was only about 100yd, but youre not going to be shooting 500yd with a laser. Youre going to passive aim for those more accurate shots at distance. And in using this method to zero, its SUPER easy to tell if your zero shifts, because you just reference it to your red dot.
Thanks for testing equipment like this! Not everyone wants to drop $2,000 for a simple laser pointer. I've heard that some people buy a cheap airsoft Pretend15, zero it in without firing the weapon using the optic, and then fill it with clear epoxy basically locking everything in place. I have one and am thinking about doing this.
@angryasianfab if yours is on a QD mount, check the mounting bracket. I've got one of the knockoff aluminum PEQs on my GPR, and the QD mount was barely hand tight on it when it came in. Pulled the mount, loctited the screws and torqued it down as tight as I could get it with an allen key. Hasn't moved at all. Did the same thing to the MLOK section it's mounted onto. Used red loctite on both. Potting the guts can help, but mine hasn't needed it.
@@angryasianfabhave you checked the screws for the qd mount like buck suggested yet? Curious about this as I'm thinking of picking one of these up as a backup.
Have about 1k rounds through mine and its holding zero well. I dont crank on the mounting screw because ive seen the casings crack from that. The newer somogear peq15 with 8xxxxx + serial numbers are an updated polymer which is much more durable. Or so they say..great video.
Is this with the unit serial number starting in the 8xxxxx? Supposedly the new ones starting at 8xxxxx were newly designed to hold better zero and prevent the cracking where your friend had cracked his. Edit - I didnt get to the last part of your video. Disregard my question lol still a great review nevertheless. Interested in that ngal as well. Thanks!
Hey do you have any experience with the "potted" models? I think it's supposed to make them sturdier and more durable. I think the downside is if it's potted you can't take it apart and work on it if a problem does arise though. Correct me if I'm wrong please. What's your thoughts!?
@l337l0gan I've taken apart 30 potted units. Mainly, you want the turrets secure, you want more tension in the springs for that tactile click of turrets, solder of battery lead, I also like to weather proof the units. I also add epoxy to where the clamp is on the inside for added strength. Adding potting to all electrical connections as well. My personal unit has a few thousand rounds and is still kicking assx
Supposedly, and I haven't been able to find the dude, someone out there is swapping out the springs in these things witch makes them hold zero way better. I think the dude was on tac swap, but I never did find the listing or any guides and what springs to use.
What serial number is your unit? The latest batch with serial numbers starting with 8 have the same housing as the genuine PEQ15/LA5 and an improved laser
I purchased the Somogear PEQ15 for my airsoft gas blowback rifle. I upgraded the gas valve, buffer spring and changed the buffer to a steel one and the rifle kicks about the same as a 5.56 rifle. Although, I shoot the damn thing once and the recoil turns the laser off. Is there a fix for this? I heard putting an o-ring between the battery and screw on lid could work.
From what I understand this is an issue with the battery cap, just like you said you can try an o-ring. Check out the NGAL video I did we had the same issues, ended up just taking some pliers and pulling the "spring" on the cap back a little further for better contact. Good luck.
Another benefit to top mounting is the peq is protected by the optic and buis if you drop it completely upside-down. Ive seen side mounted peqs on 249s and 240s explode when dropped onto their side on pavement . It was such a problem that our belt feds always wore PEQ 15As or "DBALs" because of their aluminum housing.
you know for me hearing this. I would think it would be a good budget IR laser for training just so I can get use to the controls and have trainining on whether it be using it for Airsoft, or real steel training to rehearsal the functionally of using a laser in general without breaking the bank & or breaking a more expensive IR laser for some odd reason. its better than nothing and good as a training aid when you want to upgrade for a more reboust IR laser for your main rifle
I was looking forward to this video. I'm curious if there was a significant temperature shift when you lost zero? I haven't zeroed or shot with mine yet. I ordered a metal replacement for the picatinny mount just in case. The cracking seems to have been a common failure. I'm curious if there is a torque spec and if the ones that are cracking are over torqued. I don't know if you know this but you can get a roll of metal tape for dryer vents and hvac stuff from lowes. I have used that will good success for making my own laser zeroing targets. The tape definitely works well with laser bloom under NV if you zero at night.
The day portion was in the summer around 90*, and the night portion was recently around 40*, so definitely some temperature shift. But the (noticeable) loss of zero seemed to happen around the 700rd mark which was all done at night after 300rds. Good tip on the HVAC tape!
For your zeroing description. If you bow hunt we call that following the arrow. You move the sight to follow the arrow, the exact opposite of regular rifle scope zeroing.
Well the cracked one did it for me. 300 holosun here I come. Thank you for being honest and showing everything. At least you didn't end up saying somogear sent me this one to do a review on like most reviewers.
I run mine with a Ferro Concepts placard, holds three m4 mags in the kangaroo pocket. Pretty warm and comfortable, they do fit a little snug, and they sell super fast when available.
you really need to check out the sotac perst 4 and sotac dbal a2 and dbal pl they sell the ir glass for 20$ on the dbal a2 to make it ir illumintor worthy and ts insane it appears to hold zero after 300 223 on my 12.5 i took it apart and swapped the two connectors for the vis and ir to get the ir laser and illum to work together on the same setting really quick to do pretty sweet
Am i the only one that has a somogear peq15 on a airsoft rifle . I have a real full power peq15 on my MK18 and i cloned it with a airsoft rifle . The cheap ones suck and for looks i wanted to use the airsoft clone to train since it hard to shoot at nught where i live . It works great but seems really cheap to put on a real weapn in my opinion.
You do get what you pay for. Considering these are like 10% of a real PEQ15 it's hard to beat the price and performance for the money. Mine's still going strong so I can't complain.
People meme on lasers as some stupid accessory and while theyre never going to be a primary aiming method for 99% of situations, I think people forget that the purpose is low profile enhancement of capability. When our vision is compromised because the sun is down we use nightvision or even just flashlights. When our shooting position or ability to shoot cleanly is compromised we can use a laser. Otherwise, iron sights would always be "good enough" for any situation but obviously theyre not perfect everywhere or its the only thing anyone would use!
Just a heads up guys N Gals ...I just received 2 new FDE PEC15 POTTED directly from somogear website ..ordered and received them monday .. I just cracked one open to get busy installing a JB Weld base on bottom cover piece at interior and drilling and tapping to mount permanently to an American Defense QD pic mount from the inside .. and then replace springs to stronger ones and drill linkage face and insert springs into the aluminum armature that attaches to laser bodies.... GUESS WHAT ????? The new models they sell as POTTED are NOT potted at all ... nothing .....has labels as potted ,,,even came with a lil 1" round sticker in box stating PCB Potted Nope .....They LIE !!! The base mounts and lil metal hardware this thing comes with are deplorable.....
Thanks for making this video! I look forward to seeing the NGAL! When you were in Afghan , did you ever go to the Logar province? if so I was there 2012-2013
I didn't see part one before watching this. In fact, I hadn't seen any of your videos before. This video got you a subscriber. Good info, you're funny and I like the bonus footage. Thanks, from an old-er than you, 54, 82nd guy. H-Minus!!
Man...I absolutely hate that they discontinued that rifle. Such an amazing concept. Hopefully you got the spare barrel before they stopped selling them.
I was able to use an HK416 on a few occasions in the military and loved it. Big fan of pistons for rapid firing with less gas buildup around the chamber. Learned about the 516 and ordered my "poor mans HK416" in 2012 right before I got out of the military and right around the time the Sandy Hook shooting happened and everyone went on an AR buying craze. Waited 11 months to get it, and it's been my favorite rifle to this day. Unfortunately I don't have many spare parts, no barrels, and I had to make my own barrel nut wrench because they've been discontinued for years.
I've got about another 200rds in since my rezero, still going strong. Was able to hit 6" steel at 75y under NODs. NGAL is sitting on my desk, hope to have a video up in a month.
@angryasianfab sweet, I'll be looking forward to that. Thanks for your videos. I built a set of PVS-14s because of you, and I bought the mount/ shroud from your site. Keep up the good work, man!
Good breakdown. I've yet to do any night shooting with mine. This unit continues to draw interest so I can't help but speculate Somogear is going to take all this feedback and make these failure points go away. My buddy bought one then bitched and moaned when I sent him your video as well as Hop's. I'm still impressed with the IR pointer at night, it's so goddam bright compared to the Holosun LS321. It's good to see all these companies making stuff that is semi reachable for the money, aint no way I am ever purchasing a Mawl.
I used my Starrett calipers to measure the center of my rifle bore to the center of my ZenitCo PERST4. Due to that rifle size the laser is on the side. I have a remote that links the laser with my IR Z-Bolt torch. I use a paralell zero. I've had good hits out to 300yds at a range. That rifle is an 11.5" with the AA piston kit but custom as it has a pined gas block and the barrel is a Centurion Arms CHF with the Lantac Dragon SC ASR Bravo muzzle device. Great upload and these targets are pretty good.
That's impressive. I believe the military says effective range of IR lasers is under 150m, so 300 is nuts. My eyes aren't as focused as they use to be, I don't think I could see 300 at night without magnification. I think an NV scope would be useful here (expensive). What caliber are you running with that set up?
@@angryasianfab on that rig I run an Aimpoint Comp M4s with the 3x magnifier. My IR torch has an adjustable spill so if I narrow the beam it has a crazy range. Now when it comes to target ID for people without IR tags I can't accuratly ID stuff beyond 140yds. Faces and that type of stuff. I'm running a Gen3 PVS14 GP with a magenta color filter to make it look more like WP. The Perst 4 is wicked bright as it's a FP laser but luckly it can be turned way down for close stuff. If I run it all the way up at close ranges it causes my NV to auto-gate. I have so.e 3D printed diffuser caps that make an IR illuminator unnecessary at CQB ranges. NV is fun shit.
Which would that be, though? The optic zero or parallel? I’m not ever sure which method was ultimately used in this vid. I’m guessing the optic method.
Tempted to buy one and torture test it on all my rifles. It'd have everything thrown at it from a M&P 15-22 to a PWS 308. Might even try 12 gauge if I'm feeling froggy.
I think 5.56 and below it would be ok. I wouldn't trust it on anything with more recoil. At the end of the day this thing is an airsoft toy and we're asking it to do things it's not really designed for lol. That said for the money it's not bad.
@@angryasianfab yeah tbh only rifles I'd trust it on would be my 5.56 AR's, 5.7 (CMMG Banshee upper), 22, and maybe a 300 Blackout running subs only. AK's and 308's I don't think it'd survive very long.
Guys check out the new Sotac peq15, it has green vis laser IR laser & IR laser illuminator not crappy led. As far as the case cracking from what I understand even with a real peq when installing it, use a small amount of blue locktite, tighten it finger tight then give it I think just a half turn with a screw driver, you only need it to be on tight don't go crazy with it & trust the locktite to hold. Nice video too m8
There's no point continuing to trust Chinese plastic. Once a company releases a dbal or ngal with proper laser illumination, I'll start buying Chinese again.
@@Swanhub Yeah if I was using "real steel" I'd def be investing in something high quality in the 'buy once cry once' category, things like the sotac or somogear would be good for testing or for backup guns. There's a ~USD$650 dbal-a4 I'd like to check out too, also some sub USD$300 mawl units. The worst mine will have to deal with apart from being bumped around etc. will be gas blow back recoil, but others that have the sotac peq unit report them holding up on 22lr for 200+ rnd counts plus rough treatment, so they may hold up to .223 even 5.56? I wouldn't expect these to hold up on 7.62 short/long. But the moment a company brings out a sub$1k ~USD$600 LAM that has good laser/laser illumination ppl from airsoft to prepared citizens will be buying them out of stock.
I was taught that they go on top since they are designed to be pushed to front sight post and split it scout light always on the inside pads and wires on the outside since it a small profile and won’t get in my way of my offset opt I use my off since I use my offset instead of my lvpo or scope
I was looking into this stuff because of night trekking and I don't want to be running into stuff like psycho's or other wild animals the middle of the woods as crazy as it sounds. I know there is alot of light and laser's out there with the Ir laser and light. But which one's are decent for civilian use but still has power to where its not over powered?
I think the Somogear PEQ15 is tough to beat right now for the price. Otherwise I would maybe look at a Holosun, but then you're getting into x2 the price.
@@pim1234 If you zero your laser at 100m then your bullet should hit where the laser aims at 100m. But if you're using a target at say 25m to do a 100m+ zero, then the rounds will be offset of your laser at 25m. Because bullets dont go in straight lines, they curve up then down, unlike the laser which is a straight line. Watch part 1 of the Somogear PEQ15 video I explain it a bit more.
