Information on the piece:
"The Harp part carries the following inscription:
SONATA VI: with Accompaniments for a Violin and Violoncello, or may be played on the Harpischord as a Duet with the Harp. Composed by G. C. Bach, on the purpose for the editor to play.
G. C. Bach is Johann Christian Bach (1735-1782). In contemporary publications the more exotic Giovanni was sometimes used even though Bach was no longer living in Italy. 'The Editor' is the Welsh Harpist Edward Jones (1752-1824). From 1788 he was 'Harper to His Royal Majesty, the Prince of Wales.' He was a popular society figure giving harp lessons to the gentry and at the esame time establishing himself as a performer in the Bach-Abel Concerts.
The Trio is a very elegantly wrought piece and must rank as one of Bach's most successful pieces of chamber music. It is also interesting to notice how the Cello line is being freed from the constraints of the figured bass. The Harp part, which is concertante in style, yields a fascinating clue as to which kind of harp Edward Jones used in the performance of this work.
