light shower for sure because i really expected some kind of grunge breakdown because melanie is known to do that, but listening to it all the way through and realizing that's it a soft and sweet song, I fell in love with it. :)
the “plan out my last days on earth eating you” is a reference to how insects eat their partner as an ultimate sacrifice of love, she doesnt mean this literally but as a way to say how much she would do for her boyfriend. this also connects to the next song (spider web)
I think Melanie meant “plan out my last days on earth eating you” as in how light eats dark and vise versa. Especially with the connection back to Field trip about named be Katerina meaning Light but changed to Melanie meaning Dark….. but I mean could mean that way ngl.
She announced on Instagram that she will release a music video for every song. There is a movie that is supposed to go along with this album, but they are aiming to release it next year.
2:15 DEATH 5:01 VOID 6:55 TUNNEL VISION 9:49 FAERIE SOIRÉE 12:09 LIGHT SHOWER 15:10 SPIDER WEB 17:16 LEECHES 20:47 BATTLE OF THE LARYNX 23:26 THE CONTORTIONIST 25:15 MOON CYCLE 26:45 NYMPHOLOGY 28:53 EVIL 30:21 WOMB Can't wait for you to listen to the deluxe version of the album!
spider web is about internet addiction! and every song blends into the next song and the last one blends into the first! anddd the noises at the end of the contortionist are melanie’s real period cramps recorded on their phone :)
some fun facts: all the songs have transitions between them!! so you should totally listen to them in order, it's very good. Also, nymphology's ending is actually a part called amulet! you also mentioned a loop at the ending, and that's exactly the concept :) melanie used to play a character called crybaby in her previous albums, and this character is in fact immortal, so the idea of a loop in the album is to represent this immortality. There's a very interesting lore behind it all, and if go deeper in that you will understand lots of other things ;)) melanie is one of the most genius and brilliant artists i've ever seen, literally my fav S2
melanie martinez is a cinematic universe. all her albums are/will be completely visual, and they form a trilogy that ended with this one which is sonically very different from the others
this is why i love this album, everyone has something they can take from it. i see a lot of others who love death and void, but don’t care for faerie soiree and light shower as they’re “too slow” there’s pop, indie, rock, some latin vibes in faerie soirée, and there’s something for almost everyone… except maybe. country in there? 🤣
SO true. faerie soiree definitely grew on me, and light shower is my absolute fave from this album! and i’ve seen a lot of reactions where ppl love nymphology but i usually skip it 😅
I’ve been a Melanie stan for years and this is by far my favorite album. Melanie is such a talented artist. Her lyrics are picturesque, metaphorical, layered and both mystical and intense at the same time. The crybaby story is so multifaceted and each song covers something different from her.
Your outfit is absolutely perfect. Fairies and fairy lore is naturally really creepy actually. There's a whole genre of horror called Folk Horror, which Melanie's designs really play into. It's like... Horror but make it floral, pastoral, and kinda haunted.
LOVE the commentary! As a long time fan of Melanie, her music has always carried a lot of sfx production along with unapologetic fire lyrics and all of her songs carry a part of a whole story. Her first two albums (Crybaby and K-12) follow the story of Crybaby and this album is Crybaby's death and mixes Melanie's personal beliefs of the death and life cycle. In the past as well, she released music videos for her albums with K-12 having a movie. She's said she has plans to release a movie to tie into this album so it's something to look forward to! Also, yes, a lot of the songs more or less bleed into each other musically which is where the wonderful endings of the songs come into play. With the rap ending of Nymphology, it was actually lyrics for another song that was instead repurposed to be an ending. Also fun fact: They've said in the past that if they weren't a singer, they'd love to be a poet!
@@edanmcleod9666 I wish the film would come out then, but Melanie said she hadn’t got the funding for it and hasn’t filmed it yet so I’m guessing late 2024/ Early to Mid 2025
I love how you caught on to how Melanie does concept albums!! Her last one was too! It was called K-12. It talked about school settings, but metaphorically speaking on real issues in the world, such as politicians , SA, etc. With this album Melanie is using Death, what happens after death, and rebirth to discuss issues/ topics. For example Void is the nothingness that you’re in after you die, before you move on. Metaphorically it’s talking about just some sort of self Journey Mel is trying to escape, the void “negative energy, mindset” Then with light shower, Mel spoke about how people who have died, and came back explained that there is a shower of light that shines through them cleansing them from their trauma , and restoring them to their natural vibrations. Metaphorically Melanie is talking about Someone she loves has entered their life, spewing a light of love and happiness cleansing her. Some songs are obviously more loosely based off of the actual concept, and steer into other topics. However Melanie’s brain is 🤯.
The storyline starts with the album Crybaby, and you can see recurring characters through the music videos as well as some characters continuing into the musical movie for K-12, the second album in the story. The EP After School isn't in the storyline, it's more personal to Melanie herself, and then the story picks back up with this album and there is apparently music videos *and* a movie coming for this album. She is genuinely iconic in my opinion, everything from the metaphors to the double meanings, she's is truly genius. Oh and another little fun fact is that Carousel (one of the songs from Crybaby) was a theme song I believe for a season in American Horror Story! Never watched it so I couldn't tell you what season or anything, but just a fun fact to mention (if anyone knows and can fact check me there, it'd be greatly appreciated)!
You are correct every song in this album bleeds together especially her ending song 'Womb' where it ends with "Life is death, death is life" and her song 'Death' starts with that lyric too. This was intentional as she makes films out of her albums and the portals film will be out sometime next year!
about the transitions, every song seamlessly glides into the next except for void into tunnel vision, and evil into womb, to hear them all, in playback settings make sure crossfade is off, but turn both gapless playback and automix on :) also please make a reaction video to the deluxe tracks!
I love seeing people react to Melanie for the first time! I’ve been listening her since i was like, 8? Haha! Melanie is always in my heart, def recommend her other albums!!
you should to react the last two album’s from melanie cry baby and k-12 that connect with portals because they’re a trilogy ☺️! and the deluxe tracks too from portals, there songs are really good 💗✨💫
I think you would definitely like Melanie’s older music more, this album is really different from her “usually” sound. Hence the over production, usually Melanie’s beats are intense, but she kinda made this album more alt/Rock. Which is why there is so much going on!! So I definitely understand that point of view, of some ppl enjoying more minimal sounding songs?
You should so listen to one of her other albums like k-12 or her Crybaby album. You would see that every album as a different aesthetic that’s really intriguing; which is one of my favourite things about Melanie 💗
PLEASE listen to her crybaby album!! It’s her first album and before this she had a previous character named crybaby, and her songs surrounding this character.
u should totally react to k-12 if u want a visual melanie album! they made it into a whole film! (I think shes also doing it for this album but idk when that will come out)
Your excitement to the switch ups is exactly my reactionnn. And I’m happy to see someone loving faerie soirée because it sounds exactly like the title 😩
I love this album so much more than her other ones. I love them all but this album has no skips for me (I sometimes skip light shower and leeches if I'm not in the mood for a slow song but I do really love them both)
When you said it would be cool of this was all one big music video it technically will be. Melanie will be releasing the album in movie form at some point. She already did this with the K-12 album which I highly recommend you react to as well
I would love to see you reacting to Aurora. Especially her album Infections of a different kind (setep 1) or the gods we can touch. Her lyrics are immaculate
I really love the way you appreciate the details of each song 💗💗 and it's really interesting that your reaction is from the end of Melanie's trilogy of albums. The story that is told from the first album (Cry Baby) and gives space to give meaning to his life and the real problems he faces in his second album (K-12) to end it with death, a portal that gives a journey to the soul to reach reincarnation and start again (Portals). 🌹🤍 I want to recommend one song for each album, but I know you may like many more 😹❤ Training Wheels (Cry Baby) Strawberry Shortcake (K-12) and one more Bittersweet Tragedy (Dollhouse EP)
I love when she’s like “oh this has more rock elements than I was expecting but I makes sense for the song” after battle of the larynx and I’m just sitting here like *there’s a big storm comin* (Also even if you don’t make a video you should listen to the Deluxe Tracks Pluto and Milk of The Sirens)
Loved your reaction 😍😍 Since you love songs with strings, I really think you're going to enjoy Madison Beer's debut album Life Support. A lot of emotional songs and very beautiful production 🤍 One of the best albums of 2021 imo
First of all i loved the trailer i will be listening to gravity second of all melanie also took part in a lot of the msuic production of this album and in fact produced void all by herself
Melanie seems to have a really good way of musically marrying the complex with the simple. She also has a great pop music sensibility. She is able, much like the Beatles and Bowie, to take her musical influences ( I believe, maybe, to be Kate Bush/Bjork,etc..) and boil their influences down to a more concise hook, lyrical and melody combination than her contemporaries.
Void is actually produced and written by Melanie all by herself! It's her favorite song of all the songs she has written and that is really special to me, like it makes me appreciate the song even more and the meaning is really relatable to me 😭🙏❤️
hi! i just enter thi video and i wanted to terll you about melanie! all of they albums are conceptuals! portals ig getting a movie, and yes, all the songs are connected
The endings of each song are actually transitions to the next song btw. (Also the transition from the contortionist to moon cycle was not digestion, it was the sound of period cramps)
