Finally listening to Melanie Martinez's highly anticipated album Portals. She deviated from her classic sound, and I'm here for it. Unedited version: / portals-by-first-85373272
@@J80. no mark is like average, more time needed means she basically kinda didnt like it/found it questionable at first listen but needs more time/listens to decide on her actual feelings on them i think
The outros are actually supposed to connect each song, and it's honestly brilliant how she connected death and womb to symbolize the cycle of life and death ❤❤❤
@@jesterofdarkness_ sorry friend but on the crybaby music vid on mel’s channel 2:07 is when it starts it’s supposed to sound like a baby fussing but mel’s saying “death death, death”
@@bludsuk3rno she says she likes experimenting with beats thats why she has beats like in soap, she used an sfx of bubbles popping its she didnt plan portals in the crybaby era she planned it in the k-12 era so its just a coincidence
i am SO so glad you liked this album ! this album is about the death of her character Crybaby and how she reincarnates into a new creature , each song relating to concepts connected to reincarnation while also having earthly double meanings . there’s also a DELUXE version of the album with only three songs that don’t relate to the theme of the standard album so i pray that you listen to that one too .
the contortionist reminds me so much of k-12 and after school with the crazy laughing, sound effects, pauses, and subtle trap. tunnel vision definitely alludes to the nostalgia, darkness, and brilliant ingenuity of the entirety of the Cry Baby album and era
Portals is definitely a type of album that needs time for you to actually like it, especially to those who are fans since Cry Baby since it may sound weird. I personally loved since the first listen because it represents the growth, not only about CryBaby (character) but also Melanie and I definitely relate to it cause I grew up with both of them. Love your reactions 💕
Cry Baby was like a delicious, PERFECT hamburguer. Filling cheese, fresh lettuce, roasted meat, etc. K-12 was like stale milk. Yikes. Old, repetitive, ugh. Portals was like a mushroom salad with salt and pepper. A little bit weird, but refreshing and odd in a satisfying way.
@@Winter-Alpha-Omega i deffo understand the k-12 one, like i love many songs on it but idk why whenever i think of the album it just seems so dry?? portals is definitely the best and crybaby is amazing too (after skl ep is underrated fr)
@@sarvhalo K-12 sounds to me like an album Melania Trump released because the label or someone was asking her to and she wanted to have fun recording the film. But to me, it always lacked the punch and edge Cry Baby had and Portals confirmed that to me. I didn't store a single Portals song, but at least I can recognise Melon tried something. Even if I didn't feel connected to it.
@@sarvhalo I think the main problem with K-12 is because (in my opinion) it sounds more like a soundtrack than an album. The first songs for example feels like are there only due to the movie, not because they were really meant to be there. Also, Cry Baby and Portals works because both of them can be understood as a piece of the character story but also an album who anyone who isn't a fan can listen to.
On the second listen, don’t stop the song! Listen to how every song transitions into the next! This album was produced so well! One of my favorites for sure!
The entire album is actually cyclic! The extra long outros are transitions to the next song, so if you have a chance to listen to the album once again, I highly recommend letting the entire thing play out!
This album was her best in my opinion. I love every song and once you hear it more and more the more you like it. I’m glad that you enjoyed it, Melanie put a lot effort on it.
@@si_multifandom_ch_5099agreed. LOVED Portals so much but CryBaby is in a pedestal in my mind😂 It meant a lot to me growing up🩷🩵 and I don't think it's getting surpassed anytime soon
Girl, the “long ass outros” are actually really good transitions to the next song! if you havent already i recommend listening to Portals all the way through without skipping the outros/intros!!!! mel did a BEAUTIFUL job I want to see what you think of the songs added to the Deluxe album!!!
lmao everyone on twitter was like shes gonna hate it but I'm glad you enjoyed it bc this is my favourite melanie album for sure. I loovee leeches which Ik is unpopular but that song gives me goosebumps every listen then the contortionist then death. Melanie really fed me with this album bc I think this sound is def what I've needed from her
Ikr leeches is so underrated probably the most disliked and unpopular song next to womb I just love the meaning behind it and I js love songs like leeches like how's its a slow sad vibe
LIGHT SHOWER is one of, if not my favorite song on the album. Once the meaning of it clicked in my head, I just about balwed my eyes out from how deeply it touched me. This entire album is something completely different and new than anything I've heard before. Melanie has done something ethereal and beyond our world, she really has something special, a different perspective on life. That shows in her last two albums up to this one, there's just this magic she brings to us through her music. I'm fairly new to Melanie as a regular listener, and this album made me fall in love. After going back and watching K-12, the parallels between Crybaby and The Creature, she was really considering everything being one big connected story. In her own words, Crybaby is dead and PORTALS is the third and last chapter of this tale.
I love how Ajay discerns and decode the symbolism and metaphors from the artists' lyrics; it's very engaging and immerses the audience of what her thought may be ✨💭
@@bernardodiascampos927 We really can't blame her for that. Music is art. Art can be viewed with different perspectives. Melanie likes to write most/few of her songs open for interpretation literally or figuratively; open for different perspectives. So it's absolutely fine to view it differently from the majority, doesn't make it wrong 🤷♂
@@bernardodiascampos927 I think because she doesn't know that it's a continuation of K-12 and it's been a while since she watched it so I'm sure she forgot.
you not realizing that all of the long outgrow were for transitions 😭😭 but really though if you actually listen to it all the way through it really adds another layer to the whole album, it’s really beautiful
Portals by Melanie Martinez takes you to a whole different dimension. Her vocals have matured and her style of music has evolved. We couldn't be any prouder of her success.
ummm whos "we"? we, her fans, love her enough to tell her when the music is bad, u on the other hand, will lie and say its good and that will be her downfall because u dont tell her the truth, this album is very very bad. melanie can do better and so can u, stop feeding her delusion because she will end up like artists who listened to fans who never gave their true opinions on their work and now they are irrelevant (katy perry). im a big fan of melanie and i am not proud what so ever and im actually disappointed that i waited all this time for good music then this is what i get..this is what im saying, say the truth, it helps her when making music in the future....
@@user-ke5rt3ji8cits called having an opinion and taste.. they meant we as in the people who watched this video who love melanie or this album, not people who dont.
@user-ke5rt3ji8c bffr is it that hard to believe ppl think this album is good shut up☠️ YOU have ur own opinion stop thinking u can change other ppls opinions/and or think that everyone else has the same opinion as you. You're too dense to understand the meaning of this album
I'm so glad you liked it! I'm really obsessed with this album and its reincarnation/cycle concept. My favourites are Death, Void, Tunnel vision, Battle of the larynx, The contortionist, Evil and Womb, I also find Moon cycle interesting, the others are still good songs but I need them to grow on me. The aesthetic for this era is crazy, so I'd suggest watching the videos of Death and Void :)
Im a big melanie fan but i do admit this album is a grower, i did not love it as much when i first listen. A lot of songs i wasn’t vibing with but as time progressed i grew to love more songs and the whole album in general.
At first my sheep mentality was just like “omg you love portals” then I realized I didn’t like it that much and then I realized once again I actually love it, it is definitely a grower
This album 100% can be a 10/10 it just takes time to take in all the music, time to take in all the lyrics, and reading her meanings behind them. at first i only liked 8/16 from her deluxe straight away.. and honestly now I feel like those other 8 songs are my absolute favourites.. 16/16.. 10/10.. IN. LOVE.
SAME! I didn't care for some songs at first especially Spider Web (I know right, how dumb was I 😅) but now I love EVERY single song. My top favorites are always changing. Lol.
I did listen to this album before I listened to any of her others and only liked The Contortionist and Milk of the Siren. I am officially now a Crybaby and have been through all her albums. So I just recently listened to Portals for the second time. And I loved it. Added 14/16, just not Pluto and Moon Cycle (still like them though). Absolutely loved Crybaby and K-12 too
I'm so happy you enjoyed it! You basically got every song meaning down even realizing the album is about rebirth. My favs are Evil, Nymphology, The Contortionist, and Milk of the Siren (in the deluxe version)
The only one she didn't quite get was Tunnel Vision. I liked what Ajay interpreted it as, but the actual lyrics describe a partner who sees Melanie as an object.
Hello, Ajay. There is a Chinese singer named GEM who will release a Spanish album on July 10th. She is the first Chinese singer to release a Expañol album. She released the Mandarin version of this album last year, and I think it's so great. btw,she had gained some popularity from north America. This album is called Revelation.Could u release a reaction for this album please?
Every song transitions into the next song making them have those extra effects and sounds at the end of each of them, which makes the album genius😍🧚♀️💖💖
Portals is the end of the line in the Cry Baby's trilogy. Basically, Cry Baby has died, and the album is her trajectory after death, facing the void (purgatory) to settle her accounts, crossing the tunnel that takes her to drink the holy water of death (reference to the end of the book Republic , from Plato), allowing her to forget the memories of her past life and allow her to reincarnate. Each song tells an aspect of the experience beyond death, using earthly themes to understand it. This album is based on books on hypnotherapy, past life regression and the intermediate phase between death and life. In the end, Womb is the closure of that experience; Cry Baby's soul is ready to be reborn, giving us the message that life and death are an eternal cycle to which we are all destined. This is reinforced by the end of the song, which picks up on Death's intro, but now instead of saying "death is life", she says "life is death".
hi AjayI would like to introduce you to a very famous female singer in China and Asia, G.E.M., who would like you to listen to her Spanish album Revelaci ó n The lyrics and songs are all independently completed by G.E.M., with 14 songs in the MV series mode. G.E.M. first served as a screenwriter, and the album will be released globally on July 10th. Please feel free to comment on it
I love when the little sheer material on the left of her hat perfectly aligns with the grooves and edges of the ribbon. Occasionally its like two perfect triangle puzzle pieces
I hope you’re gonna like the deluxe tracks! This album has such an interesting concept. Anyways I really think you should listen to Preacher’s Daughter by Ethel Cain!!
theres something about this album thats so magical and fun because the more i listen to it, the more i love it more and more. thats never the case for me with albums. def in my top 5 albums of all time. it cant get much better than this
Only five minutes in but Ive been seeing so much negativity surrounding this album and its so nice to see someone just taking PORTALS as it is and vibing and trying to understand it 🥺💕
I strongly believe that Portals is an experience. In the first time i heard it, I didn't like or understand most of the songs, but i tried gave it more chances. I think the songs were purposefully mixed together, making you feel a roller coaster of emotions, but unfortunately, it ended up being confusing. An example of this is Light Shower, Spider Web and then Leeches. I hope you can give each song a chance individually, and I'm looking forward to the deluxe version!
I absolutely love how throughout the entire album, there's something that most of us will find relatable. Not everyone has perfect lives and I love how much Melanie dives into self love and growth with her music. It's why The Contortionist, Nymphology, and Evil will always be some of my favorite songs on this album since personally I've had a lot of bad relationships where I didn't feel like I was worth as much as I know I am. I absolutely loved your insight as well and I'm very happy to continue listening to this album :)
I’m so so happy you liked this album, for some other recommendations you should totally do auroras ‘The Gods We Can Touch’ it’s so good and definitely showcases a different sound for her. She leans to a lot of 80’s esc sounds in quite a few songs whilst still keeping her amazing lyricism. Songs like Exhale,Inhale also remind me of her previous projects especially with the themes of nature!!!
Honestly I enjoy this album more than Crybaby or K-12. I think it takes longer to grow for some people but I enjoy this sound a lot more and really like the different sound she’s going for here.
me too. i became a fan of melanie with this album. i listened a couple of songs from crybaby years ago, i found it fun (pity party was my fave) but i didnt gave much attention to it and melanie in general. i didnt even know she had released k12 (which now im listening to it everyday for the past two weeks, im addicted).
Portals was definitely a grower album for me especially cuz I had to get use to Melanie’s new sound. After listening to each song and searching up some of the meanings behind them, I truly learned to appreciate each piece. It’s such a unique album and makes you feel like you are entering a new portal/dimension in each song The outro’s are meant to be long because they all transition to the next piece. I honestly wish she did the same with k12 cuz the tour version had really cool transitioning themes for each song💚💚💚🧚♀️
i love all of Melanie’s albums and portals is no exception. they seemed to come out just when I needed them. I love your reactions and I hope you enjoy 💓💓
im so glad you liked evil, literally that song made me cry so much the first time, but its not only that song, the whole album. the album changed my life sm, and it feels like u disconnect from reality when u listen lol, so happy u reacted to it! ❤
@@cigfluencer not my fault you dont have taste.. and everyone has their favorite music. i mean sure some of it isnt good but respect it! and the fact that ur here responding to me is concerning & strange.. so
@@cigfluencer It's not very kind of you to say something like this to someone :( even if you don't like it, it's perfectly fine and okay for someone else to experience something differently than you do.
I’m glad that you enjoyed the album! It does take time getting use to some songs especially moon cycle. Sonically I like death, void, tunnel vision, and leeches.
i was waiting for this review so bad 😂 i love the fact that i can't think about another artist who could sing about periods or wombs and ACTUALLY sound so good! melanie to me is the most interesting singer we have in this era. Portals is amazing and is my favorite album so far ❤
the album as a whole is just such a piece of art. The album should be listened to as a whole in order so it is complete. It paints a picture and tells a story, to me this is the best story, sound, etc. But i will say, this album needed a couple listens for it to grow on me because it is so different from her past albums. But trust me once it grows on you, it will continue and flourish into such a beautiful piece. don’t be afraid to take your time, its not an album that you’re going to come to terms with on the first two-three listens. But just trust, it will grow on you when you give it the time and attention. Loved this video, this is exactly how i felt on the first listen 😭💗
one thing for Ajay, is that she will scream and dance whenever Melanie beat drops, but this time Melanie took us to another world within her portal, Ajay stayed silent and starts to understand the lyrics and feel the vibes in it. This album is very experimental and new to us, i can actually see my reaction through Ajay. what a bop ❤
Hello, Ajay. There is a Chinese singer named GEM @gem0816who will release a Spanish album on July 10th. The long outros to song are probably just there cause they connect the songs together. Excluding the songs in the deluxe album, all the songs end with a transition that blends into the next songs. The end of womb even continues the "death of life is death" from the start of death so it creates a cycle to the start of the album. Very fitting to the theme of the album
I really like how there’s elements here and there of her previous albums in Portals which ties into the whole crybaby development. Yet, at the same time it feels new, different and experimental. It’s even interesting when you think about past lives and how in theory you possess qualities that your past lives might of had and you’re growing/building on top of that much like the music itself, it evolves. This album hit for me the first listen and just gets better every time.
Evil is my favourite too and she said it was abt a narcissistic relationship she was in where the person abused and manipulated her but suddenly was calling her evil when she finally stood up for herself!
Im upset she didn't hear the outros. It was supposed to be a transition Edit: And this album is about the death and reincarnation of Crybaby, being the end of the Crybaby trilogy. She will be releasing a movie like K-12, and each song still connects, just like her previous works. At first, I didn't get it either, but I came to understand it and saw its own beauty, and Im glad that, through time, I eventually became OBSESSED with it. Now I can say that this album, in my opinion, is truly her BEST album so far. QUEEN, I HOPE YOU READ THIS AND CONSIDER DOING A REVISIT ❣️🧚♀️
@@pfxsdelrey hope she reads this. Because I think this album is more digestible if you know the context😭. This album is one, if not THE best album this year.
@@Justhppy2behere Cause I need more time with some songs that maybe are not for me, but there will always be changes so... who knows if tomorrow I will love it or not yet 🧐
She’s got every song meaning on her instagram! It’s quite beautiful once you read into it! Plus all of the lyrics have been posted on her website and genius!
I think that a very special thing on Portals is that the whole album flows between songs, each outro is the intro for the next song, it feels so smooth to just let it play ❤
i hope you can listen to the deluxe tracks, it has one of melanie's best songs ever (imo) Milk of the sirens. being a woman and understanding the meaning of this song is simply surreal
25:15 GIRL IT DOES BUT YOU STOPPED IT 😭😭😭 I just love how you just vibed through the whole album and that you had a really close or exact interpretation to the meaning of each song
It's okay ajayll, I'm the same as u in my first listen, until i listen to it again and again the album is starting to grow at me. And after that I can't stop listen to it everyday and this album is was like my life story
This album is definitely a grower. Melanie posted each songs meaning on her Instagram if you are curious about them! I also really love evil and I think it’s about her ex Oliver tree and I SWEAR sonically it sounds like one of his songs which just further drives it home that it’s about him in my opinion!
Just to u know, all the songs are connected between them, u should listen to the Outro and Intro of each song together 🥺 all of them have a transition between, expect the duos VOID-TUNNEL VISSION and EVIL-WOMB, there’s not transitions between those two, but the rest of the songs have a transition 🥺🥺♥️💜
FINALLYYYYY i've been waiting a really long time but now you're listening to it!!!! ahh so exciting i hope you do the deluxe versions too bc they're amazing
You should definitely revisit the album!! I promise the songs you werent a fan of before will grow on you!! The album is amazing and in my opinion her best 🥰🥰 my favs are death, void, tunnel vision, light shower, evil, womb, powder, and milk of the siren
I like the way how you express the meaning of the songs, in your own perspective. I really liked the album, it's one of my favorites. It still has the essence of Melanie from 2015 in some songs and I think that makes this album so unique. My favorite ones are Death, Void, Spider Web, Moon Cycle and Evil. I was waiting for this reaction ✨
Portals truly is such an amazing body of work the cohesive thematics and layering in both storytelling and instrumentals/Vocals is very impressive. Overall portals by Melanie Martinez is an 11/10 and my fav album of the year thus far and of hers.
Her reaction when she started listening “Tunnel Vision” ahahahah I had the same reaction… really love how Melanie sounds now but that one is sooo Cry Baby era. Melanie is a fucking Genius, in love with everything that she delivers!! 🫶🏽🫶🏽
