Sonic 2: Egg Gauntlet Zone (FULL, follow-up) 

Sonic 2 for iOS actually has this, and there's a zone similar to Egg Gauntlet available when you complete the game.

+rdococ Exactly, that's the end result of this. The creators Taxman and Stealth had this idea in mind you're looking at right here, but Sonic Team didn't agree on such a change of location, graphics and such. So it was dropped in favor of the boss attack we have now.

+Smash Master Noah Greene Not by beating it; it got deleted mostly out of the game so can't be enabled by normally playing it. You must use hacking utilities to get to this deleted level. Or save yourself the hassle and just watch this video.

I still remember the first time I got to the Death Egg and saw I was going straight into a boss fight without rings. My 111 year old heart sunk like a stone when I saw that. I quickly lost all of my lives trying to figure out Metal Sonic's pattern.

He didn't really _create_ Hidden Palace, but more like recreated it.

@@bran2756 Actually, Sonic 3K had Death Egg, but Egg Gauntlet uses the graphics from a level in Sonic Crackers, a bizarrely-named prototype of Knuckles' Chaotix on Sega Genesis.

James Rowe Christian Whitehead was not forced to discard this level. He had meetings with SEGA, and ultimately decided to scrap the level. He made a statement that a boss rush would be better in the bosses natural environment.

I am sure this answer was good PR so people didn't get overly pissed but after a while of listening to "explanations" by companies, you learn how to sniff out bullshit. Sonic Team are generally full of idiots that think their fans and players are idiots. Apparently if some things are different colors, that's "too confusing" to players because it was to them. This is how most good logical ideas in companies are scrapped. Idiot executives thinking the general public is as out of touch with their own media as they are (because they're too busy with all their money to care), and they have the power to force the creators to stoop to their level on laziness. Not only DIDN'T they do that, they actually had a ring monitor before the final two encounters. So they deliberately made it easier.

So what? If someone wants to fight with them as in Sonic 2 or wants an extra challenge, they can lose rings deliberately. If someone wants just to have fun, they can keep them.

well first of all it wasn't even in the sonic 2 original and wasn't even a thing. then remake came along and it looks like the perfect map for the boss rush we got. except it wasnt used for who knows what reason. such a waste of a good map :(

lilmattere Haha. To be fair they've constantly been making horrible business decisions for Sonic, arguably since the beginning, it's just they got lucky with it sometimes. Sonic Adventure 2 was completely rushed for the 10th anniversary, somehow that one didn't crash and burn though. Infact, Segas been putting pressure on Sonic as evidently as Sonic 3 where it was rushed and split but they got lucky there to. But yeah, do they really think some purists or something would actually complain about this boss mode. If anything it was made for these sort of hardcore fans imo and any new players could care less about an extra feature like that. Plus the new boss blittz is... while not bad in theory, seems tacky after this one which clearly had a lot more work put into it. :P

Well the inclusion of this boss rush and the extra features that were added gave people more of an incentive to purchase this remade version, comparing to all the other versions which are pretty much just bad emulations.
