When I was young and mom was at work, she would often take me to my babysitter's house. A guy at that house had a Gamecube and we played Super Smash Bros. Melee and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. This game was what got me into Sonic. Me and my friends in elementary school would even do reenactments and impressions of the characters in the game. God, I wish I could go back in time. I feel truly nostalgic talking about this. Memories. :)
He said elementary school, now I really feel old, I would've been a high school senior around the time the GameCube version came out. This is still one of my favorite Sonic games too, also Adventure one was the first time I bought a console with my own money because the demo had Emerald Coast with the whale, I was sold then after the graphics blew me away, wish they'd do a remaster with today's graphics and engine
One more thing, City Escape in this game also blew my mind with it perfectly on beat as soon as Sonic smacks the ground and takes off, brilliant. That also sold me on this one too 😍
That is something ironic, shadow was supposed to originally die and killed off here for the entire franchise afterwards. But fans loved his character so much they brought him back. Since he was the only character at that time to have a bit of a "story arc backstory" that has a bit of human tragedy in it. "Btw, to this day I still don't get why Gerald made a hedgehog as the ultimate life form." I keep hearing he got the idea of Biolizard and shadow from a prophecy on a echidina tablet that foresaw the battle between perfect chaos and sonic. Though I'm pretty sure this is just a fan theory. Then again the entire core of the cannon is based like the shrine, including the chaos snake relic statues in the tunnels filled with water.
I didn't actually get this far in it, because it's awful, but I heard that in Sonic Chronicles, at one point you learn that Shadow's design was based off of the mosaic found in Hidden Palace Zone of Super Sonic in the final boss fight of Sonic 3&K.
Apparently, if you let the timer in the Final Hazard fight run out, Shadow says "Hehe, Sonic. I just realized who the ultimate life form is. It might be you." So apparently there was this idea that Shadow is the "copy" of the real ultimate life form prophesized in Angel Island (hence the name Shadow) and that Sonic was the real ultimate life form all along (hence why he could use Chaos Control with a fake emerald).
I know, right? The track of this trailer is why I loved this trailer so much when I first saw it 18 years ago (I almost can't believe it's been that long). I still love that track.
Just for you to know, Sonic Retro did a research on SA2 beta and found out that character table doesn't show a signs of later Tails and Rouge addition into the game. Actually, I can't find any proof that Sonic team was forced by the fans to put Tails into the game. This trailer looks rather like ST wanted to keep details in secret, like GUN logo ona track etc.
I think these 4 characters were going to be all there were, but then Sonic Team realized "o shit we need 2 more characters and 1 would pose as the hero story equivalent for eggman's gameplay and the other would pose as the dark story equivalent to knuckles' gameplay" so they added in tails anyway with eggmans game mechanics and created a new character named rouge who would have knuckles' game mechanics to keep things balanced
2005. I have just turned 8 years old. I was either celebrating my birthday or I got really good grades in school. Either way, I remember talking to my dad on the home phone (you know before cell phones existed). Dad wanted to get me a gift and he was looking at the Nintendo GameCube games at a store. Out of about the three of them he said, “What about...uh...Sonic Adventure Battle 2?” Now the other options weren’t interesting st all. And I honestly didn’t want to diss out any one of them. And the only reason why I was interested in it was because. Well. I played the sonic game on Sega and it was pretty fun. So I kind of like Sonic. I had no clue what this Sonic game was about, I never even seen the cover of it before. But because there was nothing else more interesting, I made him buy that. Little did I know that the second the game started playing, I would play it endlessly. And buy it again on Steam when my GameCube was destroyed from Hurricane Irma. If only I knew at that moment that I was making my dad buy one of the greatest games I ever played.
@@rotundmonibuv5103 similar to people saying that the late 00's was early internet, the internet long existed before the 00's but most people didn't get their first experience with it until 2007.
Aha, i remember the day i got this on Dreamcast when i was like seven, i was driven to the hospital because of appendicitus. I was trying to fake it and pretend that i wasn't in pain just so i could go home and play it haha. Most memorable game i've played so far. My childhood right there. :P
the trailer version of the city escape stage was interesting, and it looked like you could do tricks off of the parts of the street before the hill. if only there was a way to play the beta version of the levels that were in this trailer before the final product. that would be nice.
I saw some unused parts of other levels like green forest and unused animations for sonic and cutscenes that I wish were used in the final or atleast playable
it looks like cg so i think was it was just show and there’s no indicator on when to jump like the ramp like the ramps you just press the jump button on the ramp but you won’t know when to jump to trick on the hill
@@Safalmao You can say that about basically any game with a large amount of content, even some of the best games of all time. Not really a great criticism. Best Sonic game is either SA2 or Sonic 3, one of those.
The story doesn't try to take itself too seriously. The story is just the right amount of serious. Serious storylines are better for 3D Sonic games then simple and lighthearted ones are.
Look at Sonic's running animation when he's running from the truck (specifically,1:27-1:29). So smooth, just like in SA1. Why didn't they stick with that?
There were some other animations like when sonic is on the rocket or sonics in-game run which is much smoother than the original. And when sonic jumps, he spins faster. I wish there was a way to have those animations in the final game
Originally the playable characters were Sonic, Knuckles and Eggman. It was one campaign. It was later that they decided to do two campaigns so Tails had to be stuck in a Mech and Shadow and Rouge made playable. Two of Shadow stages, Sky Rail and Radical Highway were originally Sonic stages while White Jungle and Final Chase used set pieces of Green Jungle and Final Rush respectively so it was easier to make to give Shadow more stages.
@@Epsilonsama It was 3 campaigns actually. All of the Dark story was Eggman's story basically, most of Hero was Sonic, then Knuckles' had his own story. You can still see remnants of this in the final game, it's why Knuckles' story events seem so random and intrusive, they just fused them into Sonic's story.
Sonic in Sky Rail! XD 2022 EDIT: Oh wow. I just stumbled across one of my cringey comments from when I was a teenager. Why did I use to spam XD all the time?
I remember seeing this, this brings me back so many years ago, before I had a dreamcast, I was hoping it was going to be on the N64 xD, till I finally got a Dreamcast when the game itself came out, then I got it again when Battle released on the Gamecube some years later.
@TheCrushpanzer Yea, there was a beta demo version released with Phantasy Star Online for DC with the first level of gameplay. A lot of elements are different, including the truck chase and the fact that Sonic still had his old style shoes on instead of the Soap grinding shoes that were in the final version. (Although I remember he could still grind!) Sonic Adventure 2 really showed the Dreamcast's power, the game stood up to Gamecube Games that were released 3-4 years after Dreamcast
Sonic Adventure 2 was the best/last Sonic 3D game, this game had so much potential it deserve to be on the PSN & XBL arcade idk why the fuck sega dont have this release yet, its only right if Sonic Adventure was on PSN & XBL why not SA2?? this was my childhood game i'd love to have it on my PS3, sega need to get on their shit, give them props for making a HD version of Jet Grind Radio, now give us our SA2, Shenmue, MDK2, Phantasy Star Online ver. 2 Fur Fighters These was such great classic games
@jedimasterpickle3 He was, but only in the story. That's the reason that all of the characters play alike because originally only Sonic, Knuckles, and Eggman were going to be playable, but when they saw how the fans reacted to no Tails they added him, Shadow, and Rouge into the gameplay. Tails, Amy, Shadow, and Rouge were going to be in the story from the beginning but not playable (even though Amy still didn't become playable.)
I started playing sonic games at my gamecube (after literally a month of sonic generation release) and i was having fun playing sonic adventure 2 and that was the best game ever And now in 2024 i got a ps3 way too late
I watched this trailer at school and at public libraries back then when I didn't have Internets, hahah good times, this trailer was HYPE for me and SA2 did NOT disappoint! Sadly I consider SA2 the last Sonic game and it shows. Sadly no one cared about the Dreamcast back then and thus SEGA went bankrupt, I bought all SEGA consoles until the end :( you cannot call yourself a hardcore SEGA fan if you didn't support them like we old school fans did. SEGA made amazing hardware for the time, I miss them. Most people know about Sonic Adventure 2 Battle for the GameCube but I bet more than half of you didn't know or play the original SA2! It had many differences too!
Sega Man 89 Yep, because most kids have and had Nintendo consoles. I'm glad I grew up with SEGA consoles, I had Nintendo consoles too, but I was more invested in SEGA.
I always liked how smooth Sonic ran in this teaser Especially at 1:27 - 1:29 . (Reminded me of Sonic in the classic era a bit in how he ran) I wish it was like this in the game. In the game he runs a bit clunky and just not as smooth. Even in SA1 when Sonic hit top speed he had a smoother animation. I just didn't like how it looked in the final version.
I still enjoy playing SA2 but this trailer is something I still enjoy this game that I own the Dreamcast and GameCube ones and I now just stick with the Dreamcast version since I enjoy it a lot
I remember finding this on the official SA2 website and not being able to watch it due to the abysmal download speed! Only ever watched the first 6 or so seconds of it before the webpage timed out. Anyone else remember the website? It had a page where you could control a 2D sonic and jump to activate text box’s with information to each game leading up to Sonic Adventure 2. Watching the first 6 seconds of this trailer gave me massive nostalgia. Ah man, I was so exited leading up to the games release😅.
@@horodoomwolf that’s incorrect, Shadow was already planned to be playable by the time of this trailer according to evidence found in earlier builds of the game
Damn. Existing since 2005 is hard sometimes. You always miss the good upcoming shit for great nostalgic reasons RushDS and ShadTH were after my existence
Edit December 2022: OK so Frontiers is out now as of November and is better than I expected. Still not my favorite Sonic game though :P Here from the Frontiers gameplay trailer. This trailer is miles superior than both the gameplay trailer and the initial teaser combined. Awesome gameplay clips, depicting the game's varied and exhilarating stages, and even teasing story elements and the soon-to-be-fan-favorite new character Shadow. Compare this to the garbage they reveal NOW. I can just hear the bootlickers coming to crucify me now. Sonic Team doesn't have the level of talented folk it used to. They're reduced to a group of unqualified hacks on the level of average Unreal Engine fangame devs. Seriously, watch the June 1st 2022 Frontiers gameplay reveal. That game is set to release in time for the holidays. It IS going to suck.
@chrisclan But it IS SA3. It has adventure fields, an story that tries to take itself too seriously, alternate gameplay styles, and open levels. It just doesn't have the name, but in every single aspect Sonic 2006 is the third Adventure game.
So this was Sonic Team with their marketing strategy back then? Bold, confident, gameplay, and actually showing what's necessary without being so secretive?
Well, Sonic Heroes is a continuation of the SA story line, and Shadow The Hedgehog is set soon after that, and touches up on what SA2 left out. So while there is no true SA3, the story progresses through other games. P.S. - Sonic Unleashed was originally Sonic Adventure 3, but they dropped the name because of it straying too far from the formula.
no, an evil sonic clone was supposed to be in sky rail but the trailer shows at the end that shadow was gonna be in the game but just cutscenes and supposedly there was gonna be quick-time events hence (SONIC CLONE)
Interesting how they show off pretty much no Egg Walker gameplay, you can tell they were still trying to figure out how much of Gamma should be brought over and how much should be new.
Shadow, Rouge, and Tails were not planned as playable characters, only specifics to cutscenes. So Sonic, Knuckles, and Eggman were originally going to take a storyline that Shadow the Hedgehog would soon use to where certain things you do will change how the rest of the game goes.
