It makes you wonder, does Beta Mk-2 fight Gamma out of malice or a desire for revenge, or is he too far gone in his programing that he'll just simply destroy anything that comes to the downed Egg Carrier; a final mission for no true purpose.
It’s in the air but what fits the best is that beta had a sense of jealousy that gamma beat him in front of eggman during the first fight. U see beta get in eggmans face to prove he’s wants to be better for him, so eggman uses his parts for mark 2. Now with his better body, beta wants that rematch to show gamma he’s not the best anymore and a revenge to be better than him.
You can tell the story of a robot gaining a genuine soul and defying his creator's wishes to pursue a noble and heroic goal over and over again and I'll never get sick of it
The way he seems to gasp/jerk in surprise when that image pops up always gets to me. The fact that no words are said make this scene an even greater masterpiece.
Yeah, as a kid I was only left to speculate what happened. I keep coming back to see this character every now, and again. He is somewhat a Stoic character. It's that very moment when he jerks back almost a sudden burst of shock/emotion, only for his body to fail him unable to continue this thoughts. Not even moments before this he seems ready to die. There's something tragic about that. Thanks for pointing it out.
Originally he was supposed to shoot himself in the head. I wonder if that jerk was the impact of the bullet going in that was left over from the censorship?
@@TaloneDrake I didn’t meant difficulty, it’s just that Beta is the only boss that actually feels like one. All others either die in seconds (rivals battle for example) or are poorly designed, such as Viper which is easily the worst boss of the game.
It really is adds a lot more personality than if he just teleported to avoid it or if the attack just went through him. Shows how powerful his upgrades are that he can literally smack out not only the attack but the whole lock on.
I do have this theory where Gamma could have survived the laser blast. However, the white flicky caused Gamma to perhaps realize he also houses a flicky. To which he realizes his mission isn't complete until the flicky inside of him is free, causing him to self destruct.
The only real possibility would have been a character illusion from the phantom ruby, but Forces didn't bother with that, So it's Unlikely for us to see a Beta MK II boss again.
Makes me cry every time, genuinely the most underrated boss theme in the entire franchise probs and everyone that does know about it loves it. Gamma is a gem and the battle with his brother whom you fight in the beginning AND in the end as the final boss of his story but upgraded with his sense of revenge for a rematch to then be the birds brother is just such a good story. Such a good story! utilizing the animals inside of badniks and how a robot can have emotion. His piano theme and how’s he’s just represented as a character is perfect. Rest in peace gamma 🥲
2 weapons made to follow orders. One never modified, never failed and learned the value of empathy. One modified excessively, failed at every turn and only valued what he was made for. both never cared for by their creator. Both taking each other out in a final attempt to stand by their principles. Kindness vs duty. In a way they both accomplished their mission. The flickeys were freed and beta is finally gammas equal in death.
I'm always shocked eggman never tried to make another Beta-MK II to fight sonic. It seemed like it was designed for that purpose in mind, the arms could reflect homing attacks, his "charging dash" attack seems like it is also meant to bypass Sonic's normal protective abilities. Also, his ability to almost "teleport" and get high in the air for energy blast bombing runs could take the hedgehog by surprise. Of course, sonic would find a way to win, but its still fun to think of how it would play out. I also think thats why Gamma was still able to beat Beta the second time around, he simply wasn't designed to fight another E100, even an "inferior model".
I wonder how Eggman reacted to the destruction of E-Series, but we have Omega and the Shadow androids so I guess he didn't care about the whole ordeal. He always got the good ol' reliable Metal Sonic who puts up quite a fight if needed.
I wish they had shown betas body shatter like they did zeros instead of just vanishing. It’s still really upsetting to see him convulsing and burning though.
I like to think Omega is an upgraded Gamma seeing as they look so similar. I mean, they probably are, but if not, surely I can’t be the only on to think Gamma and Omega aren’t the same, or at least Omega is a heavily inspired creation off Gamma.
say what you will about the delivery of every line being flat, or the multitude of bugs, but this will always be my favorite sonic game yeah sure, sa2 is more *polished* per se, and it does have more stand-out moments (like eggman where he very much should have won (hell imo that's the best he was ever written)), sa1's story is just more impactful with chaos and just all of gamma's story, also i just like how sa1 handles movement
So much love and care went into this era of games. The music, the sounds, the atmosphere and you didnt have to have hyper real graphics, (though this was a crazy standard at the time)
For a boss that goes down in 4 hits , Beta Mk2 has a lot of variety in how it can dogde and protect your attacks and also how it can hit you Too bad that the boss fight has a time limit, would love if he took more hits to make the battle even better
There's gotta be a fanfic where Sonic actually faces them all or something. It's like I never watched them do the task they were created for (excpet gamma who fought sonic in-story), omega included
I always wondered what the meaning of that final flashback in Gamma's head was. Now I'm pretty sure it was the memory of the bird trapped inside him. With Beta and Gamma both destroyed, both those birds can be reunited again.
i don't think gamma himself has the memories of the bird, it was probably a vision he was shown not unlike how other characters in the game get shown the downfall of the echidna tribe when they weren't there and had no connection to it. needs to be understood that the birds themselves aren't the same consciousnesses as the E-series robots containing them, they're just energy sources
Admittedly, I was never able to like Omega because he felt like a shallow knockoff of Gamma. What a sad story, I really wish we could've seen him again
Like this comment if you aren't the only one who cries to this boss fight or find this as the saddest boss fight in any game. Brother versus brother. Brother 102 sacrificed himself to free his entire family from their programmed lives. Idk why, but ever since I was a kid, I cry to this - and I don't really cry to anything not Clannad or any movies. I didn't know why I cried as a kid, but after playing this game called life, I find E-102's story symbolic of the emotions, and how powerful sacrifice can be in one's life This entire piece is like a masterpiece
Probably yes, If he could beat things like the Death Egg Robot, Metal Sonic, and Chaos 6, Beta would certainly be a challenge, but far from impossible.
Easily, (Archie) Sonic is just as broken as the Flash (composite/baseline) but both of them are inconsistent (also it depends if you count the Archie comics). I think even videogames only Sonic would speedblitz this thing (but he tends to play around).
