First BDIWORH in 4K, baby! Also, you may have noticed that at 2:09, I have a disc called ‘Swiss’ instead of the Game Boy Player (GBP) disc. Swiss is used to loading up another software called the ‘Game Boy interface’ (GBi) which is far more superior and rich in features compared to the Game Boy Player’s software. This is to make the display look sharp as possible and in 4K as the GBP is pretty soft. THIS DOES NOT AFFECT THE HARDWARE and it's still using the Game Boy Player hardware; only the software was swapped. And just to be sure, I did quickly try all games using the GBP software off-camera and it resulted in the exact conclusion as the GBi. Also, yet again, thank you all for your incredible patience! The next BDIWORH will be the Sonic port on the commodore 64. Hopefully, within the next 2 months (time still isn’t on my side), I’ll make it worth the wait, I promise! 😊
Imagine if the makers of these bootlegs are like: Sonic 3D Blast 5: Oh yeah, let’s just skip out 3D Blast 2, 3 and 4. Sonic Adventure 7&8: We’ll not count Heroes, 2006 or even World Adventure (Japanese name for Unleashed) and not have 6, let’s just have 7 then 8 the end. For me, I always thought that Heroes could sort of be Adventure 3, but then it could be Sonic Unleashed that’s Adventure 3 instead (since in Japan it’s known as Sonic World Adventure), it’s a mystery on what’s another Adventure game.
I feel like sonic 06 is sort of adventure 3 Multiple characters Branching stories Finishing all character stories gives you epilogue like ending. I feel like 06 was meant to be adventure 3 but Sega decided for it to be more of a reboot.
6:58 The chaos emaralds were so powerful that it even shifted me during transformation. Definitely not an error on my editing skills.Nope, not at all! Took almost 15 to 25 minutes to pause at the exact time
I also did a video on sonic bootlegs on real hardware, and found out the Sonic Adventure 7 will actually run on the original Gameboy and Gameboy Pocket
RHS the crashes on the hour and a half death trap zone you mentioned I think is because you went off screen because every time ( except for the one where you die and sonic got hurt again ) you went off screen when the game crashed.
I mean, if pokemon jade crashed on emulator, as well as real console, it should count as working on real hardware because it's doing the same thing on both.
There is a fangame called Sonic - Blasting Adventure that makes the Sonic Game Boy bootlegs look and sound good, and be playable. EDIT: I just noticed that redhotsonic mentioned this fangame at the end of his video.
You still have more Gameboy Sonic bootlegs to try... You can't escape it forever, you know... Sonic is waiting... I really enjoyed this one, and you trying these bootlegs out is an interesting experiment which should be seen more often.
He's not entirely playing them on real hardware though. The missing piece of the puzzle is the original cartridges, which used custom-made mappers that aren't supported by most emulators and flash carts.
Hey Red, does the fan made Sonic 4 genesis work on real hardware? And another one, Does Sonic.exe Nightmare Beginning work on the genesis? Coz the engine looks slow and retro... And also, Sonic 4 genesis on the genesis...
Nightmare Beginning takes up 97MB of space, not from voice acting and such, but from the music and such that could never be produced on a genesis. Pretty sure graphics and sprites aren't optimized either for being a sonic fangame, so those would have to be compressed too. It would never run on the Genesis in base form for those reasons, the general gameplay could remain intact however, also forgot the mention code for the game would have to be completely rewritten.
Sonic.exe nightmare beginning is a .exe file so even if the engine looks slow and retro since nightmare beginning isn't a rom it won't work on real hardware plus its 97 mb
With Sonic Adventure 8, the original cartridge should work on real hardware. I know the available ROM was incredibly hard to get dumped, and had to be modified to work on emulators, so that may cause issue with the Flash Carts. There are some videos floating around of it working on Game Boy Players from the past few years.
12:10 Since this issue doesn't exist on the real cart, there's nothing deceitful about fixing it. The original cartridge uses a mapper unsupported by emulators and flash carts, so you've been using a patched ROM to begin with.
And now there's an absolutely miniscule part of me that wonders what would have happened had I chosen to buy that Pokemon Jade bootleg in Benidorm 20 years ago, if only to see if an original bootleg cartridge would have worked on the hardware.
I can confirm that it works on real hardware... to a point. It crashes at some points because it's REALLY REALLY BADLY translated and the second you save a number, n o p e. (OG GBA, btw, no idea how other consoles might work.) Though it was the one that went with the bootleg "Diamond" version, the Telefang hack and not the Sonichu monster. (the fact there's two different Pokemon Jade bootlegs...)
I'd imagine that the compatibility issues in this case (especially on Sonic 8/Pokemon Jade) are due to inaccurate/missing mapper emulation. The original cart seems to use custom mappers that were never used in official games (or any known homebrew for that matter), and hhugboy was the only emulator that seemed to run it due to its focus on these broken carts/pirate mappers.
@@ExtremeWreck I'm more so talking about flashcart compatibility, the flashcarts like he used in the video have to reimplement/emulate the mappers as well. Due to the relative obscurity of these pirate games and the fact that these games were the only ones that used these mappers, it's very unlikely that they were implemented on the flashcart. Good or bad programming, if your software relies on an external library/device/chip/etc. that isn't present, it simply won't work.
@@ExtremeWreck That would be a completely different story, the main issue here is the games barely running at all. The only way we would be able to know for sure is if we obtained an original cartridge of the game.
@@TheEssem People have & it's just as barely playable as they are here as far as I'm aware: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-t1dgszOHpic.html
I wouldn't be surprised if these were made using a modified Super Mario Land 2 engine. It would certainly explain why you can only defeat enemies by jumping on top of them.
I thought Sonic Heroes was Sonic Adventure 3, especially if we're going by Generations logic. lol In a seriousness though, it's nice to know these bootlegged ROMs work on actual hardware. These have mostly (with the exception of Sonic Adventure 8), been around for ages. I can't wait for when you do Sonic Fighter for the GBA lol
Tenicaly Heroes is Adventure 3, and i guess Shadow The Hedgehog would be 4 (not compleatly sure about that one) and 2006 would be 5, being the last Adventure Style game with Unleashed starting the Modern Boost Era on consoles
10:46 Redhotsonic: hold on let me sprinkle a few super emeralds on here... No assistance here apparently. Anyways here's the Super Game Boy 2, or if you're a fancy person like me, the Hyper Game Boy
6:24 i know why the game crashed because you jumped got hit died while landing on the floor but still killed him and revived somehow and the game confuesed itself and crashed
The freezes on Sonic Adventure 7 might not be caused by the save states. YuriofWind did a video on this game years ago and he crashed at the same exact area you did... and gave up.
0:18 there are 3 versions, Genesis, Saturn, and PC, also I am the one who finished stuff for the Sonic Retro pages on these bootlegs (Yes, I subjected myself to the game)
"You'd laugh, but I would rather play this three times over than these bootlegs again." then do a live stream of you actually playing sonic genesis 3 times over to prove your point :P
Pokémon Jade certainly should work on real hardware, the cart is just built with custom mapper hardware that flashcarts and most emulators aren't able to handle, but an actual physical card should "work" (though I believe it still crashes after level 1).
The answer would be yes but the hardware was so disgusted by the fact that you wanted to play a bootleg and not an official game or a romhack that it refused to continue to run the game and as such the game crashed before the console yelled at you and told you to play a better game/j
Hi redhotsonic, if you’re reading this. I really like your videos, Thank you for reading my comment. You work really hard you need to hit the 200k milestone
Always a wonderful time with these videos, from the extra attention you give for a full test, to lots of sprinkled gags throughout to keep us engaged. I really loved Sonic being yeeted out the door. That's quality.
3D Blast 5 honestly makes me wonder how these games are put together... Though I must say - it is rather disappointing to see that all the games are just... pretty much the same thing.
Having to subject yourself to _three_ of Makon Soft's awful Sonic bootlegs? That's a big oof from me, friend. What a hell of a way to start the new year! On bright side, at least you didn't have to play Pokémon Adventure with its unkillable enemies. _(also I totally saw that Pokémon Jade in that homebrew cart list, very nice)_ EDIT: didn't finish watching the video, you mentioned that at the end. Was honestly hoping it was the Telefang bootleg.
redhotsonic, Sonic blasted adventure are the same 4 bootlegs but with improvements that means the level you died over 100 times will now be easy to pass!
As much fun as it would be to watch you play these bootlegs on a live stream, I can't in good conscience ask you to go through with that. *shudders in collision detection*
I know I'm one year late, but I think it's still cool to share this detail (although someone probably already shared this) There is one more bootleg just like those 3 Sonic games and the Pokemon Jade: Special Pikachu Edition (that is the one that you reviewed). This one is called Pokemon Adventure, and it actually have different levels (but all the other problems still persists) There is also an bootleg called Pokémon Diamond: Special Pikachu Edition that is an rom hack of an bootleg called Super Mario 3 Special, both also for the GBC And one last detail that you probably know already, but both the Pokémon Jade that you've reviewed and the Pokémon Diamond that I've just talked about aren't the only bootlegs with that name. There is another Pokémon Diamond/Jade that is an romhack just like every other pokemon bootleg. The difference however is that this one is an bootleg of an game called Keitai Denjuu Telefang that is an official game for the GBC and basically plays like an Pokemon game. Also, the two versions is basically an rom hack of each Telefang version (Diamond is the Power version and Jade is the Speed version)
Just as a suggestion, you should give the EZ Flash series a try! The EZ-Flash Jr is an excellent little gameboy rom cart that I use for many of my classic gameboy consoles.
No matter what you cover, it's always awesome seeing one of these videos show up in my notification feed. Your stuff has and keeps on getting better and better! Looking forward to your next upload already RHS.
sonic 06 is sonic adventure 4 lol, the REAL sonic adventure 3 is sonic pocket adventure for the neo geo pocket color. Also, I think you should do Blasting Adventure! From what I can tell it fixes the physics and patches up the level design. There's even a version where you can play as X and Zero from Mega Man X!
