Apparently there’s some legal issues with Sonic Pocket Adventure that prevent SEGA from even mentioning the game ever again. Ian Flynn said that he wasn’t allowed to have the game featured in any way shape or form in the Sonic Encyclo-Speed-Ia released in 2021, when literally every other Sonic game ever was mentioned in it.
It's because SNK developed it I'm pretty sure. They might have joint ownership. (Though I don't get why SNK wouldn't work with them on that, it's literally something they get 0 money on if they don't let SEGA use it.)
There's also the fact Knuckle's theme from Sonic 3 is in the game, might not seem like a big deal, but considering Sega seems to be scared of legal issues with the whole S3 Music Situation which caused them to just replace it with the S&K theme for origins, they would likely take note of this song too. And they could also just simply hire a romhacker to remove/replace the song, like Namco usually does to get around legal issues, but Sega I guess, tries to keep their hands clean?
@@polocatfan It really sucks that they couldn't mention it at all, since it was technically the first Dimps game. I suspect the issue is due to the SNK that made Pocket Adventure and the SNK that exists today being two seperate companies. Back in 2001 SNK went bankrupt and all of their IP was transferred to Playmore (With the CEO and most of the key developers on Pocket Adventure having left a year prior to form Dimps) I think the issue with working with SNK on it may be less because of the game itself and more because of it being released on a Neo Geo console. SNK (Playmore) seems to be very strict with the Neo Geo brand, with, as far as I'm aware, it only being used since 2001 for At-Games style devices, the Wii Virtual Console, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, and Switch eShop rereleases of MVS games, and the pretty disastrous Neo Geo X (Which actually may be the main source of this apparent strictness)
The image in my head of a Sega exec at a press event just going up to the mic and saying "Sonic '06" and nothing else to announce a rerelease, in a moment akin to that time at E3 1995 when a Sony exec said "299" and basically preemptively killed the more expensive Sega Saturn, is hilarious
@@sonc07 At first.... But by the end of '95, all 32-bit systems were the exact same price: 299. The point I was alluding to is that price had absolutely nothing to do with demise of the Saturn. It's a common misconception that people make for some reason, even though there are plenty of instances where the more expensive console outsold its competition. The Jaguar for instance was 149 in '95, did it "kill" the PlayStation, or even the 3DO for that matter? Nope.
@@Carsonj13 That's because the Atari Jaguar was already out for two years by '95, only ended up having 50 licensed games of VERY mixed quality to its name, and had less overall brand recognition than their competitors, while the recognition they DID have was rather negative (they were the ones who made _E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,_ the game that almost singlehandedly killed the gaming industry).
Sonic and the Black Knight was pretty good from what I played: granted I wasn't using motion controls (dolphin), and at it's core lies a pretty simple and fun game. They should release it along with Secret rings, and just ditch the motion controls entirely, update the graphics, make them run at a higher frame rate, and fix some jank.
If not which port the games need a straight up remastered instead of a collection The universal hatred for the controls and the unbalanced skill cap of sonic and the secret rings Needs to be tone down I disagree entirely with him While 06 is a travesty I believe secret rings are black and I have merit
The one Sonic game rated 10/10 by IGN is a lost gem lmao Also it's a bit unfair to just slap Black Knight into the same bag as Secret Rings given it gave a lot of improvement to its formula. I'd say it's slightly more likely to be brought back for goodwill.
@@TheChompChamp7650 I saw the game being played. It looked fun. So it makes sense to call it a lost gem since it's an obscure but actually pretty good title.
@@markofthewolvessucks8930 The only chances they’ve had were to rerelease on any of the DS or 3DS line of systems, Wii U, or Steam Deck, and they’ve messed it up. A mobile port could work hypothetically but knowing Sega’s other mobile games, it’d be littered with ads.
i dint get why people hate knuckles chaotix... i mean, the controls arent that good, but the game itself is so fun, beautiful, and overall, have you seen a better looking sonic game in the time that chaktix was released? knuckles chaotix had ones of my most favourite soundtracks of all sonic soundtracks, ever. the levels are just wonderful, but i mean, the mechanics are SUPPOSTED to be hard cause the two characters are connected with a ring together, right? i love that game so much..
@@Cool_Kid95 yeah the level design is a bit unorganized and massive so thats one complaint, but overal, the game is literal eyecandy if you dont have nerves or a good memory!
@@Cool_Kid95 oooh- well its better for you than it is for me, i have a very bad memory, short term, and get disoriwnted quickly, so i find myself usually getting stuck on most of knuckles chaotix levels sometimes. i never do in any other sonic game, plus there are tons of levels and acts in chaotix
Pocket Adventure has a better chance than you might think. There were 2 Neo Geo Pocket Collection games released not too long ago, which also include 3rd party releases (e.g the Mega Man game), so there's a chance that, if a third volume gets announced, Pocket Adventure might be a part of the lineup Also I'm pretty sure the original Rush was actually on the Wii U virtual console.
That's what I was thinking. This isn't a channel I watch regularly (I think I've seen a couple videos), but that part made me really question the level of research put in
Rush was not on the eShop. It was mostly first party titles. There were probably plans on adding the games at a later date, but due to the system being a flop, those plans probably fell through.
The weird (and slightly ironic) thing about Sonic Boom games is that the games were suppose to promote cartoon But because of how bad the games were handles, it caused the opposite effect, having people stay way from the Sonic Boom brand just because of how bad the games were In short, if the sonic boom games didn’t exist, then the cartoon would have probably gotten more popular in general
@@IvoryCaffeine_ honestly, it's probably best to think of the rush games as having a single giant screen as opposed to two for figuring out how to port it
@@markdebruyn1212Capcom already did solve this problem with the release of the Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection by having the touch screen be controlled by the right stick.
Make it a mobile game in portrait mode, then you can use the touch screen capabilities. The problem then is how the controls would fit, but I'm sure there's a way.
I really appreciate how Kiro factors the "not received well" as one of the possible reasons for no rereleases. People be like "Why Sega chose Colors instead of Unleashed when Colors sucked" forgetting that Colors, for several years, was seen as a very good Sonic game with lots of positive reviews, especially outside the fandom, which Colors Ultimate was capitalizing on with the success of the first Sonic movie. It was not until the recent years where the fandom perception changed. Meanwhile Unleashed scored BADLY and was scorned as one of the worst Sonic games by many people (mediocre at best, due to Werehog), especially outside the fandom.
Yeah, Secret Rings was mediocre but Black Knight is a pretty good game once you play without motion controls. A re-release of both with normal controller support would fix the controls entirely.
I've got a ton of nostalgia for Sonic R. I had it on PC and have memories playing it after school in 1st grade in the family computer room, and then heading back to my room to watch DBZ on Toonami :P
I think authorities would prefer if we kept this disclosed, but a widespread rumor surrounding Knuckles Chaotix is that the game isn't trapped on the 32x, moreso it was imprisoned there as a corporal punishment - most likely for it introducing Charmy the Bee - however much speculation is on the topic. Any other ideas on why though?
I think you could see Sonic Shuffle if and only if they ever do a Dreamcast Mini. You need like 20 games to fill a system like that and you're gonna need a few deep cuts to fill the list out. Same with Sonic R and a Saturn Mini.
@pattersong6637 I'm one of those people who's hoping for both a Saturn Mini and a Dreamcast Mini. For the former, in addition to the Sonic games, some other IPs I'm hoping for include Baku Baku Animal, Bug!, Clockwork Knight, and NIGHTS. For the Dreamcast, I'm hoping for the two Sonic Adventure games and Shuffle, as well as Sega Bass Fishing, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Toy Commander, Chu Chu Rocket, and Ooga Booga.
@@FlyingDuckMan360 Saturn Mini is much harder just because so many of the Saturn's best games are only in Japanese. That said, in addition to the games you listed, the Panzer Dragoon games should be on Saturn Mini. Your Dreamcast Mini list is really solid, but there are a bunch you can add like Space Channel 5, Powerstone, and Ikaruga. It gets hard quick to come up with 20-ish really good Saturn games IN ENGLISH for a Saturn Mini, which is one of the reasons I'm pessimistic about it though I'd love it. Dreamcast Mini should be easy.
@@pattersong6637 Perhaps maybe having 1 or 2 of Capcom's 2D fighting games on the Saturn mini would be cool, since at the time those versions of Capcom's arcade ports ran and played better on the Saturn compared to their PlayStation counterparts.
@@Dzaimon8562 I know but Im not gonna buy a 500 dollar console just to play Sonic Unleashed and there are mods for Unleashed on emulation like turn off the battle music and no medal requariment. But the damn game crashes every 5 minutes.
Sonic Advance absloutely needs a collection of some sort, or at the very least add them to the Game Boy Advance NSO. I could potentially see the Sonic Story Book games released if they were reworked to remove motion controls but that's highly unlikely.
6:12 - Agreed. For a sequel to Sonic Shuffle, what I'd like to see in it is the same gameplay (drawing cards to move across the board and battle enemies, collecting seven gems, and the game ending when all seven are collected), but with improved AI (less likely to take your best cards even when they have the exact same ones), new playable characters (Shadow, Rouge, Cream, Blaze, and Silver), and elements more in line with the Sonic franchise (the Chaos Emeralds taking the place of the Precioustones, Dr. Eggman's Badniks taking the places of the Precioustone Monsters, and worlds like Green Hill, Chemical Plant, and Casino Night).
>Nobody cares about Knuckles Chaotix That hit me so hard because it’s so true, I’m a huge apologist for the game, you are always tethered to your partner, each lead character plays differently with Charmy being one of the most powerful characters in gaming (props if you get the reference), you can accrue negative ring count debt if you press a certain character to get unstuck your characters if you ever get stuck lol which I find hilarious. One of my favorite songs from the game is Marina Madness/Seascape. It also has my favorite special stages in the classic series.
the first sonic games i played were shadow in my neighbor's house, sonic 4 episode 2 in my dad's ipad and i end up owning sonic riders zero gravity and black knight for the wii. is wild how much i love those games and the franchise as a whole after those games being my introduction to sonic.
To be fair, Neo Geo Pocket Color games have been re-released recently by SNK for the Nintendo Switch and Steam. We even got some Capcom NGPC games like the SNK vs Capcom games, and Mega Man Battle & Fighters. Maybe SNK can approach SEGA for a re-release deal? 🤷
Leave the solid story and music for both games alone. Black Knight has better controls/gameplay. I cannot defend Secret Rings god awful controls/gameplay and mission structure. Party mode was fun though.
You know what Sonic Shuffle was still a fun game. Would be cool to see the concept come back. Maybe do something more with the cards, like building a deck to use during the gameboard or boss battles.
While Secret Rings is pretty hated, and was unplayably awful in my opinion, Black Knight does not deserve to be painted with that brush. It has its fans, and it was pretty fun to play honestly, with one of the best stories in the franchise. It isn't amazing, but it's not a bad game either.
i really wish sega have some care about sonic heroes because like you said it was your first sonic game you've played in the sonic series and this is applies to me too. heck, i think it's considered the introduction to the sonic series for most of 2000s sonic fans myself included.
I like to see how these games can be relevant in today's modern gaming systems as either re-releases or remasters or straight from the ground up remakes like Crash N sane trilogy and Spyro Reignited trilogy.
Luckily regarding Sonic 06, we have Project06 to look forward too on PC. Though I think it's technically cheating to say when it comes to this list, since it's a unofficial fan made remaster lol
But the thing is, once you mention “we have the PC blah, blah, blah”, you’ve literally opened up the possibility to play ALL games ever made. This video is talking about “legit” ways of playing these games without the use of original hardware.
9:43 I hate when people shit on Shadow the Hedgehog for no reason. It's actually a fun game. I enjoyed it as a kid and as an adult. I beat it recently too lmao
Unleashed and Generations have been stuck in PS3 era purgatory for some time now, so I’d like to see them get a remaster. I know that Gens has a PC port, but from what I’ve heard, it runs super bad, so could still use an upgrade. As well as the original Dreamcast versions of the Adventure games; which to my knowledge, have never been properly ported apart from PC mods for DX. I’d really like to see those ported/remade/remastered, since DX just doesn’t cut it.
@@evdestroy4121 fair enough. I’ve just only heard bad things about it. And anyway, a remaster would certainly do it good. Especially since they’ve seemingly perfected Classic Sonic in 3D for Superstars.
Just wanna comment to say I don't think I've ever seen anyone use the word *That're* ever 💀 *Amazing video as always though, would love to see Rush or Heroes ported/remastered someday*
@@SauceBoss14 It's not new, but it has never been officially accepted as real English. If you might happen to be writing dialogue for a character who uses much more colloquial speech, you could get away with it. But absolutely don't use "that're" formally or on a real document.
A few notes: Their issue with SegaSonic's trackball is ridiculous. Just map the direct to a joystick and the rolling to a button. The presentation, sound, graphics, and animation are too good to leave out of their catalogue. Fans have warmed up to R as a bridge between Sonic 3D and Sonic Adventure. I know you said that Sonic 3D gets lumped with the other Genesis games, but it's literally a separate listing on Steam right now. R has an old .exe that could easily be patched and put on Steam too. Sonic Battle being left out of the Advance collection would be foolish because Advance 3 continues its Gizaoid storyline. Shadow '05 get references a tonne in other games, so clearly the Sonic Team is aware that it has fans and is proud of it in some regard. Sonic x Shadow Generations will likely remaster some of its stages, so it's not as unlikely as you say for Shadow '05 to be released. The DS is one of the most emulated consoles, so not sure why you think it'd be that complicated for a game developer to port it. Your comments on what fans think of Sonic and the Black Knight are misguided. Most fans actually like it. It's underrated and you should look into it more. By the way, Sonic '06 was already relisted in 2022 in some countries, and a fanmade recreation that fixes its bugs, controls, and physics shows that its level design was always great. Even the original had great concepts, art direction, and music despite early forums hating on it entirely. Dismissing Sonic '06 like this is kinda old.
who are these sonic fans you speak of? I do like knuckles Chaotix, heroes, riders, 06, and black knight. And a lot of people who grew up playing those games are voicing that opinion
Here's hoping this video ages poorly. There have been rumors of rereleases for several years now, most notably Sonic Heroes. I would be surprised if we didn't get any of these back over the next few years, especially with the impending gap between major releases. Frontiers 2 is still a few years off, and with Sega interested in "keeping the ball rolling", a re-release/collection would make perfect sense in 2024 or 2025.
As a big fan of Sonic R and Shadow the Hedgehog I'd certainly prefer not to forget them. Sonic R is definitely too short and the controls take a little getting used to but those controls definitely aren't bad like the internet mob likes to parrot. It's the only racing game in the franchise that uses the footrace format allowing for more creative track layouts, multiple interwoven pathways like the classic games, and the use of character specific abilities the latter of which didn't make canon sense because Sonic and Metal Sonic are way too fast for any of their competitors but so what, the other classic games and other games since all follow the same gameplay logic. Shadow the Hedgehog is fun. The gunplay works well without complicating the controls and has a decently varied arsenal. The missions certainly range in quality but are also fun regardless, a clear improvement on the Chaotix gameplay from Heroes which was also fun although sometimes tedious. Shadow controls well too: They clearly used Heroes as the base and as a result the top speed is still amped a bit too high with slippery control but this game added a mechanic that stops Shadow dead in his tracks if while running he approaches a ledge and it also slowed him down a little while jumping allowing for more precise landings. They also added the Spindash in place of Heroes' Rocket Accel which is more iconic and has its uses and they also tweaked the homing attack which works really well. Sure the story was more edgy than serious at times but it's an E10+ video game from a franchise that's certainly touched on some serious topics but is generally and at its core a children's cartoon about animal people with powers and magic jewelry so I don't understand why anyone expects a narrative masterpiece. I've never understood why it matters to people if the characters lightly swear or not although I do find it funny that the use of the words "Damn" and "Hell" by a few members of the cast is a common criticism about this game that the internet mob parrots but that same mob (I presume there's significant overlap) praise the Japanese dub of Sonic X in part for it's use of swear words that were all censored out in the English dub. I'd love to see these two games ported to modern hardware perhaps with minor bugfixes, nothing game-changing, although porting as is would be great too. Alternatively or additionally one or both of these getting a sequel, either in a spiritual or literal sense, would also be exciting.
Heroes and Shadow technically did see re-releases between 2012-2014, albeit those ones sadly were only the PS2 versions released for PS3 as a PS2 Classic. And only in Europe and Japan (especially in the case of Shadow with the latter).
Black Knight is my favourite Sonic game no question and it pains me that it’s stuck on Wii (Wii U as well with backwards compatibility, that’s how I usually play it, but both of these systems are dead). I would kill for a Switch/PS5 port, seriously!
Charii5 pointed this out when making his "Everything wrong with Sonic Origins". He noticed that the collection has OST of Knuckles' Chaotix, but not the game itself. It became very hard for him because there were no re-releases for it or modern emulators for it. So, he had to play it with real Sega 32X hardware.
Sonic Pocket Adventure would’ve been perfect for the 3DS Virtual Console. I remember when NGPC titles were announced for the 3DS VC, but they sadly never came.
I am happy that you included Sonic Rush in it because I just finished the whole story of Sonic Rush on my Nintendo DS lite. I got the game and the Ds lite in 2023 summer but I just loved playing that game except some zones that had me killed every time and put me to game over screen. But other than that Sonic Rush soundtrack is so good, the zone music. It's just so good.
Another reason on why SegaSonic the Hedgehog isn’t rereleased is because of Japan since to get the Arcade machine rereleased they would need to go to Japan and also pay for some stuff and also implement some new controls all while that we have the problem of Hardware which is a whole other can of worms
When it comes to hand held games not being rereleased, it has taken game companies until about now to realize that people want these games. We’ve seen them finally rerelease Mega Man games, Castlevania, and so on recently. So I think it will happen. … except for DS/3DS games. That duel screen thing makes it so developers have to put in a LOT more effort to port those games.
5:40 strange comment to make about goldeneye since goldeneye was extremely popular & a re-release for that game has been in high demand for over 20 years.
Honestly I feel like the Original Sonic adventure should have been here, I know Sonic Adventure DX exists but I’m pretty sure most of use want to play the original that was only for the Dreamcast
Because it was originally going to be an ambitious sonic title (Sonic Crackers) that once started on the Mega Drive and then briefly moved to the Saturn, but due to complications with SoJ and SOA at the time, the game was heavily scaled back and moved to the 32X where it became Knuckles Chaotix, due to the addon needing more games.
usually fan patches being taken down is a sign sega has something in the works and the fact sonic 06 is just out on pc for free with huge updates and hasn't been taken down is proof they are never touching that game again
It's aesthetically gorgeous, features a fantastic soundtrack (even by the sky-high standards of its origin series), and boasts one of the most uniquely fascinating playable prototypes of the 16-bit era. Certainly not meritless from a purely artistic perspective. Shame about the actual game, though.
The closest thing to a rerelease that "Sonic Heroes" and "Shadow The Hedgehog" got, was with the XBOX versions being made backwards compatible with the XBOX 360.
what are you talking about people hate the storybook series? sure, secret rings wasn’t received very well, but black knight’s reception amongst fans is usually mixed at worst, and recently people have praised its story and music
Sega doesn’t want us to forget Shadow the Hedgehog at all. They directly reference the game in the upcoming movie by showing Shadow using a motorcycle, and some of Shadow the Hedgehog levels and villains will be in Shadow Generations. They have been referencing that game a lot recently, so Idk where you got that from.
12:10 funny thing, it HAS been rereleased… kinda. It was delisted back in 2010, but earlier this year was silently relisted for only 5 bucks on the Xbox Marketplace. Not backwards compatible tho and the store’s shutting down next year soooo…
So many Sonic games that’ll be forever be trapped into the depths of their own console exclusives for all eternity. It’ll be nice to see them get a re release, if Sega themselves care about them.
Sonic 06 "It's not getting rereleased" Me, an intellectual: If you're only counting official rereleases, then yeah, it's not coming back. If you're counting fan works, though, it's getting remade from the ground up in the Unity Engine. It's called Project 06.
Preserving Sega titles is a moot point, because they seem to deliberately turn a blind eye to emulation. They literally allow people to sell ROMhacks on Steam. Sega Smash Pack's code straight up provides instructions on how to illicitly use the emulator to play other Genesis and Master System titles not included in that compilation. Even Kega Fusion was developed by a Sega employee
