Sonic Superstars Nintendo Switch Review - Is It Worth It? 

I feel like we say every good Sonic game is "a step in the right direction". How many steps does he need to get back on track?

I think it's insane that when I was a little kid I grew up on Mickey Mouse's Castle of illusion, Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario World. And now in 2023 I got Disney's Illusion Island, Sonic Superstars, Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

I love the art design of the animations and graphics that 2d sonic has gotten since mania! And I hope they continue to use them because personally I prefer this version of sonic, tails, knuckles, and Amy over their 3d counterparts

As someone who has played Sonic since 1991, I know how the physics of a classic sonic game is suppose to feel. The height of the jumps, the speed of bouncing off an enemy and the momentum of hitting a ramp at just the right spot with the right speed to jump higher and farther than normal. I will say this: Sonic Superstars meets these feelings. It feels like a classic Sonic Game, the controls are sharp and smooth. Welcome back Classic Sonic, we have missed you since Mania.

These people just launched Sonic Frontiers (not the best game, but they do try their best). I can't help but feel some respect for keeping Sonic fresh and delivering.

I got the very second it was available. I love it. It's difficult in several sections and the bosses actually involve thinking a bit. I really enjoy it.

This game din't really grab me like Sonic Mania when it was announced, but now that i saw more of it im really curious to try it

I wanna point out before watching this and Mario, I knew who was reviewing what before watching and idk what that says about my love for your guys work lol

I plan on getting it when it goes on sale, I'm not in it for the co-op or multiplayer so i will miss out on half the games worth. But from the reviews and a few people's playthroughs i noticed 2 things. Level design seems to be made for solo play (or play 3 players and no one picks Sonic), but boss battles were made for multiplayer action. That's why the bosses are so spongy and take forever to let you hit them, as the game expects that 4 players are going to smack the boss in those short frames. They definitely need to work on those 2 aspects, and if they had simply delayed the game a bit or just not done multiplayer battle modes, they could have made online co-op, split screen co-op and had the bosses have different difficulty levels based on how many players. Those 3 things and Super Stars would have been revered 9 or 10/10 with 90% of fans' satisfaction.

Superskipping this one. I like what it's doing in some aspects but Mario Wonder just has way more going for it in my opinion.

I bought this on Switch. It has not been a great experience so far. Long loading times and twice the game broke sending the character falling through the level. I hope there are fixes coming.

2023 has truly been a year for games like how have we gotten so many good games that in other years would be goty but this year are only a contender

Idk, i ran into several physics issues, especially in Pinball Carnival Act 2. I could clearly see what was intended to happen, but the flippers would run me just slightly short of the target even when waiting to the last moment

I think it’s great on switch, however there is a lag issue when you go into your super form. The lag issue is more noticeable when you’re playing 2 player, though. I also found some weird glitches as well, but I’m guessing those are on all platforms. (Let’s hope a patch fix comes soon)

If I could pick out one thing I don't like about this game, it's the long and drawn out boss battles. Every boss is rife with long invincibility frames, forcing me to wait out their attacks and look for an opening; When in past games including Mania, if I was good enough, I could beat a boss in as little as 10 seconds. The only other thing I don't like is that on the switch version, the load times are long AF!

Is the switch version of this game the only version with significant load times? I didn’t get superstars on other platforms

There is one major issue with the switch port where whenever you go super or get invincibility, the framerate takes a nosedive and I honestly don't understand why.

tbh I personally like the pixel 2D art-style more. Loved Sonic Mania and heard this was on the same engine, so I might give it a chance

Its a mixed bag for sure. High highs, low lows. Like the OST, a crazy mix of different composers, soundchips plugins and styles, sometimes arranged by one of the others. Its a wildly assorted box of chocolates, but it's a fun box. With a few bugs thrown into the mix. But 2d Sonic never before looked so sleek or felt so smooth. Playing in handheld especially is amazing with the native resolution. A must have for Sonic fans. I expect a few patches coming up. Looking forward to what dlc will bring aswell.

I wouldn't call it a "rock solid 60" because when I turned super sonic, that frame rate stayed in the 30-40ish realm. I've also had a few glitches, for example having underwater physics when I'm on dry land, and even drowning when I'm not underwater. Game is great otherwise

So hard to choose between Wonder and Superstars. I know different games and I’m sure both are great in their own right but I can’t afford more than one this week. 😂

Definitely going to pick it up when it goes on sale.

I wish they could remake Sonic 4 Episode 1 and 2 like this. I notice the music in Superstars sounds a lot like Sonic 4

Split screen patch/mod would be clutch.

I got the game and my boyfriend wanted to try playing with me.. so we did the very first level co-op… I had to boot him and continue solo once that level was done. Anytime one of us moved the tiniest bit away from each other, the camera would move awkwardly and just gave me motion sickness. Haven’t had any issues with motion sickness playing solo though.

Eh, I don't think the lack of split screen is that baffling. Smaller screen sizes aren't great for visual clarity or camera lookahead. Plus, it's already impressive for platforms like the Switch can keep up a steady 60 fps; that's a harder ask when you have to render the game 2-4 times.

I definitely played battlemode and saw the name Felix yesterday lol just by chance we likely played same time.. didn't seem like many players compared to bots tho

I like battle mode but It's supposed to be an extra thing you do In between playing have fun making your robot character and then show them off online

$60? No. But Sega games go on sale frequently so this game will be $40 pretty soon which is a good deal. Sonic Frontiers has only been out for 1yr and I saw it on sale for $30 recently.

I was liking this game but final Fang fight in Trip's story is making me reconsider.

SEGA over charged for this one

First stage looks beautiful. But then...Lagoon City, Golden Capitol, and more just look so...lifeless, empty, and stale. It's like the producers ran out of time 1/4 of the way in. And the music...there's no consistency. The tracks made by Tee Lopes are wonderful, but the other half sound terrible.

Funfact: This is the first and only Hedgehog Engine 2 game that runs at 60fps on the Nintendo Switch. With the exception of Sonic Mania, all other Sonic games on the Nintendo Switch (Forces, Colors Ultimate, Team Sonic Racing, Frontiers, and even Sonic Origins' 3D menu) run at 30fps. Honestly, even though the downgrade in graphics is noticeable I think it's a good trade-off, playing a frantic platformer like this at 30fps wouldn't be that good and framerate is more important than graphics in this type of game.

Idk, I could never figure out how to play Sonic games. What am I even supposed to do because it’s very much not obvious. Am I supposed to get to The end fast or not because it’s not clear.

I'm a lifelongSonic fan I am not impressed with this title at all. But most of the reviews I watch seem to be pretty positive. I'm not really sure what I'm missing but the music is bad the boss fights are bad I feel like the only thing they got right for the most part was the physics and that's not enough to make a great sonic game

Im not sure why people continue to expect Switch games to play like they would on PS or Xbox. I knew my expectations going in and am thoroughly enjoying the game so far because of that.

Personally might be my favourite sonic since 3&K.

Even though its a big visual downgrade from the PS5 version, it's still impressive they were able to get this running on Switch at a near locked 60FPS. Still life in the old dog yet.

the backgrounds look really rough but i guess it's an acceptable tradeoff since it runs at 60FPS and not 30

Why don’t these drop superstar’s and mania on mobile for full price?

Still on the fence with another sonic game but this seems to be one I'll pick up at one point. (Ps your twitter seems to be posting mario RPG things, fair its an old game, but the timing of the posts is a bit off especially with new players not having touched it are getting spoiled on bosses and areas. Had to mute/block to stop seeing them. )

This certainly became Arzest’s redemption arc game after Balan Wonderworld’s tragic performance under Yuji Naka, which was after some Fruitful, but mediocre First Party Nintendo releases on 3DS.

no they are pretty bad I didn't like them, I was just glad when it was over, honestly felt like a chore to beat them, not only that the music is uninspired and you have to wait so long to attempt a attack if you miss your waiting for another minute and a half, if your using sonic the drop dash is a must during boss fights. the final boss is long and drug out. I encountered several glitches and frame drops during the final boss and because of the frame drops had a hard time beating the game on switch. I'm disappointed and I wish I had bought it on x box or my PlayStation 5.

Honestly it’s pretty fun but the last two bosses are a complete mess and are built to waste your time. Also if you get all the chaos emeralds before a certain point there seems to be a boss you just don’t get to fight at all

the mixed reviews are stressing me out idk who to believe anymore 😩 its good, its ok, its amazing! its dissapointing its bland! and the best 2d sonic ever lol enough! i just need to play this game myself

Loading times, looping audio, character animations of varying quality, and constant interruption of gameplay by annoying minigames ruin the experience for me. I like the concept of the emerald powers, but they're done to poor effect in my opinion. It feels like it took a few cues from Mania and the original Sonics for level design, but struggled with execution (leading to gameplay feeling choppy at times rather than fast and smooth). I'd say wait for the inevitable drop to $20. Until then, Mania's a much more enjoyable experience that's worth another playthrough instead of a first here.

I just beat Sonic Superstars and I’m kinda disappointed in this game. It feels like it could have had a lot more to it. I enjoyed Sonic 4 more and it wasn’t that great of a 2D Sonic game either.

Frame rate tanks with super forms that have trailing shadow clones & has stutters in some boss fights, especially Trip's fight with Fang(also REALLY hate that fight & her Kaizo levels!). Took me 2 days to beat all 3 story modes(Last Story is just an easy Super Sonic battle against a purple dragon) & it is not worth the full price at all!

Not a good time for Superstars to release. Mario Wonder and Spider-Man 2 overshadow Sonic here. We have a bombastic sequel to beloved games that is superpowered thanks to the PS5, an entry in a series that’s proven to be consistently well made with new interesting features and mechanics, and the last big Sonic game has mixed reviews

After about two hours I'm like, why am I playing this(?), it's not enjoyable at all. It looks great, but I've been duped again. 2D sonic games just aren't very good
