This build of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is dated November 3rd, 1993, and was made at a time where the game was starting to be split into two separate games. This prototype is in a very unfinished state, though it contains a number of interesting things, including an early version of Flying Battery Zone, early sprites and different music that would later be repurposed for the Sonic & Knuckles Collection on PC.
It was released on November 16, 2019 as the finale of Hidden Palace's Sonic Month.

Seriously tho', this protoype just got a lot of unexpecting things, like: Knuckles' never seen sprites that (looks like a lot in Sonic 2's style), the fucking Sonic & Knuckles Collection music are actually originally from Sonic 3 before Michael Jackson and the most unexpected one: THE "DROP-DASH" -- Like, what the actual fuck? Things I like about this: Unused sprites being used. Tails dieing on his way down to hydrocity. The drop dash was meant to be in this game. The weird sounds that play that were never used. That the "PC Music" was supposed to be the original music The fact Doing goes "OH.. my... GOD :O" when results appear. Knuckles looking like he wants your money in the intro.

Unfortunately, that older build once was right underneath this build. On the last part of the rom there was data for a Lava Reef Zone. It's like an old VHS tape. The newer recording was taped over the old one, but when the new recording was done, the end of the old one popped up from underneath. 😅

Lots of games have intriguing developments, and Sonic 3's have been discussed publicly. They started making an isometric game with a polygonal Sonic but dialed down the ambition and went with another 2D sidescroller.

@@annsky1896 Well I believe that various builds of Sonic 1 have been showcased on ces and of course the one most remember is the almost finished GHZ with ball in the level and UFOs being in Marble Zone but there is one more version that springs into my mind that has Sonics physics 88% complete and a quarter of the way complete GHZ with a completely different layout and also robotnik monitors plus pink sunflower seeds just look up CES Sonic 1 proto and you will find footage of it

Ok so is the story now that when Micheal Jackson showed interest in composing for the game, him and Brad Buxer made a few tracks that replaced the original tracks, but for the PC release they used the original intended tracks?

Scirocco who was one of the composers in MJ's team reckons he composed the beta track to Hydrocity Zone but couldn't let it out to the public due to legal reasons, we now know in fact that it is the same track that remained in the final and it wasn't even composed by him, it was composed by Masayuki Nagao according to reference, it's not even a PC track so the guy is talking shit just llike Brad Buxer did in 2009. I wish MJ and Brad Buxer never interfered with Sonic 3, their music was horrible and we now have proof that their music wasn't the original.

Originally Sonic 3 was going to be made as an isometric game because of the early rise of 3D popularity among consumers. However it was scratched and the original engine was left for 3D Flickies Island.

@Maycon Cruz plus, they didn't have enough time. Sega already made a McDonald's tie-in scheduled so they had to make the game by February 1994

I just love how sonic can fly like tails when he grabs something, and its even cooler that the drop dash from mania actually originated here. There's a lot of cool stuff here.

God, I wonder if there are more knuckles sprites like the ones we see at the begining of angel island zone. Especially because I actually pefer beta style knuckles than the one we got in the retail release.

This is amazing. Looks like at this point they still intended to release the full game. The decision to split the game into 2 parts must of happend literally days after this build so they could have enough time to polish Part 1 in time for release. Does anyone know the lead time for manufacturing of the cartridges and if so any guesses as to how much time they would of had before getting the cart out for production?

No. December head is correct. It is in fact a drop dash. Look up, and hold up and a. When u land, boom, drop dash!

The level select uses the images from Sonic 2's level select. That's Aquatic Ruin Zone.

I just checked the sprite and it really does. And, that's kinda spooky because I've been playing Sonic 3 nearly all my life and never noticed this oddity.

It's crazy how much of a difference the sprites make. With the Sonic 2 sprites, Sonic 3 feels like a real Sonic game now hahaha.

I've played through Sonic 3 many times, so it's quite interesting to see all the changes. I kind of wish they kept the swinging animation of Sonic when Tails lifts him up!
