1964. The Velocitone Mark IV ceramic cartridge was Sonotone’s attempt to compete against the top magnetic cartridges. This was the time when Shure released their M44 series and Pickering had their V15 series. The Velocitone had a frequency curve and tracking forces better than the M44 and V15 series and included adaptors that would plug-in to the magnetic phono inputs and conform to the RIAA equalization standard.

Sounds surprisingly good through the phone's speakers. In Spain we still call hearing aids "Sonotone", like we call coke "Coca Cola" or cacao powder "Nesquik". If you fail to hear what the other person is telling you, it's not uncommon to be told "Do you need a Sonotone?"

I was surprised by this, its rather rich sounding and enjoyable.

Ceramic cartridges have a capacitive source impedance - meaning that their source impedance goes down as frequency rises. If you use a large enough load impedance - say, 500K to 1M Ohm, they can produce a rising low frequency response that more or less compensates for the standard RIAA curve, within a few dB either way. The "compensators" sold for this are merely loading resistors that cause the cart to have a flat (velocity) response, and reduce its output so that it can be plugged into a normal magnetic phono input. You can do that with even cheap ceramic cartridges in the crummiest record players. The one thing I see that sets this cartridge above most ceramics is its low tracking force, which is unusual for a ceramic. It sounds like a ceramic, though. Lots of second-harmonic distortion.

I still have a few NOS Sonotone 9TA HC cartridges. Best ceramic cartridge ever made. It's comes very close to some modern MM cartridges

The Goldring CS90 was very impressive too for a ceramic cartridge, measuring 30hz to 20khz.

@@analoglooney I don't have any experience with the Goldring

@@josemeyer7464They're very rare nowadays but I keep one in my collection just to remind me how good a ceramic can be. The Sonotone was a lighter tracker and more compliant.

Just this comment- Perhaps it's the video but the LP looks warped and wore, when you have side to side movement that always means the center hole is not centered. Just something to note... Can you tell me if these are still available or are being produced again?, I'm interested...

They're pretty easy to find, in eBay I just found a couple for sale

So a guy could plug his TT straight into his amp, without the use of a phono preamp? Cool beans.

Not quite... The ceramic carts still need a bit of EQ so amps has ceramic or magnetic inputs. Some Radio Shack amps and mixers had both. :)

Effectively yes. But the input impedance had to be 1 meg ohm or more for the cartridge to 'self equalize' A small capacitor was sometimes added to lift the top end.
