OK, let me start. First of all I would like to say that I never seen a You Tube video that got me so hooked on gear. Beautiful and elaborate video of Voluum pedal capabilities that should be made by marketing team of Sonuus. I stumble upon this video and I found everything I want from a pedalboard...Like its me in a parallel universe, the things I like but didnt know existed :) Because of another video of yours, I bought Line 6 M5 and Im struggling finding a reason not to buy Voluum, but cant find one (should I mention that I considered to buy boss ES-5 - but luckily didnt ). Then I read the manual of Voluum ( yes Im a 36 year old lad that in its spare time read the manual without owning a pedal - see what you did to me:) and then your blog. Neh, not one reason not to own it:) PS.Never posted a comment on YT gear related but this is stronger than me. Good job sir! Best gear related video Ive seen.

Great demo, covers pretty much everything you can get from the Voluum. I already have a Voluum (in part because of how you used yours in your other videos) but you've reminded me how good it is. My only criticism of it is that you really do need the editor software- it's really tricky to do anything in depth on the pedal itself.

Sick pedal and great sounding set up! Very happy to discover your channel, great video and production. Is it manageable to controle the Voluum by itself (without midi switching) ?
@TheGuacamoleXplosion
@TheGuacamoleXplosion 4 года назад
yep, to some degree manageable ... but I would advise to, at least, add a cheapo dual footswitch (which can be connected with a special cable to the Voluum’s 5-Pin MIDI Out; exact wiring to be found on page 39 of the Voluum manual), to have an easier way of navigating presets up/down. However, if you want to be able to separately switch on/off the sections (like Tremolo, Compressor etc.) of the Voluum by foot, you will need some kind of MIDI controller.

Great thorough review! Btw who makes the yellow midi switcher your using to switch presets?
@TheGuacamoleXplosion
@TheGuacamoleXplosion 26 дней назад
Thanks! The yellow switcher was custom built by Dirk Meyer from www.dimehead.de/ ... it’s not MIDI, just A. a true bypass switcher (middle footswich) which I use to bypass the whole board, mainly for testing and for emergencies on stage; B. a relais-based A/B switch which can be remote controlled via a TS jack, which I control from my ES-5, and C. a set of 4 regular momentary footswitches, 2 of which go to the ES-5 as external footswitches, while the 2 other control preset up/down on the Voluum via a special cable (built to the specifications from the Voluum user manual).

Another fantastic video and great playing again. I have a question about working with the Prostage remote wah. Do you need the Boss ES-5 to make that work, or can the patch be selected using the Voluum pedal? Thanks so much!
@TheGuacamoleXplosion
@TheGuacamoleXplosion Год назад
The Voluum can send program change commands, so in theory, it would be possibly to run a Voluum + Prostage Remote Wah combo without any additional MIDI controllers. However, with the ES-5 or another capable MIDI controller, you can get way more out of the Remote Wah. Like, I mostly use a single Remote Wah preset, and use CC messages sent from the ES-5 to configure that Remote Wah preset to deliver what I need for my current ES-5 Patch: either wah or clean boost, with a defined amount of boost. There’s a few problems with the Remote Wah (most of which are solved with the sucessor, the Prostage Wahrytone): A. It’s hard to program; when you don't have additional Prostage hardware, you cannot use the Prostage app. So you need to program your Remote Wah presets by manually sending MIDI SysEx data. I configured a virtual device in Cubase to do that. Programmed a few presets that way, actually I just need 2 or 3 (one for basic wah/volume, one for LFO wah), since I can control/adapt most parameters with CCs sent from the ES-5. B. It makes popping noises when switching presets with different frequency settings. ES-5 allows to automatically mute the output for some milliseconds while swiching patches; this eliminates those noises. C. The LFO cannot sync to MIDI clock. D. The sweep range is not as wide as e.g. on a Cry Baby wah.

@@TheGuacamoleXplosion thanks so much for such a detailed and clear answer. Your videos are quite inspiring so of course my immediate reaction is “I MUST HAVE ALL THOSE PEDALS!!!” 😂 But I have a closet full of great pedals already , including a couple really decent wahs and a volume pedal that up to now has seen limited use. So I think I have some homework to do before I go shopping. Not a bad thing at all. Thanks again!

Am I right in thinking that if I were to buy something like a HX Stomp XL and (when/if they become available) a Fractal FM9, that it would be able to act as an expression pedal for both? Not having to purchase a pedal for each would be handy, but on top of that: 1) It won't wear out. 2) I'd have all the additional benefits it offers should I choose to use them or if using it in a more traditional/analogue setup. 3) It clocks in around the same price or cheaper than if I were to buy the Fractal and Mission pedals which do wear out. If all the above is true, this could be a very easy decision.
@TheGuacamoleXplosion
@TheGuacamoleXplosion 2 года назад
Yep, you can make a preset on the Voluum sending e.g. CC#1 on the HX Stomp’s MIDI channel with values from 0 to 127, and another one sending e.g. CC#100 on the FM9’s MIDI Channel with values from 32 to 100. And so on, with different MIDI channels, CC numbers and min/max values.

@@TheGuacamoleXplosion Very cool! A day or two ago I was searching for an expression pedal that would be compatible with both Line 6 and Fractal and all the results I found said there wasn't one because everyone was talking about the expression pedal inputs. I'd not even considered using MIDI for expression pedal input.

Hi, I’ve been trying to set up my voluum as an expression in my Boss ES8 and so far didn’t get it to work. Do have some information on things I should be aware about ? That would be greatly appreciated.
@TheGuacamoleXplosion
@TheGuacamoleXplosion Год назад
Hi Réne, the Voluum does MIDI expression, so you would not connect it to the ES8 "Exp in" jack; but rather put it in a MIDI chain before or after the ES. How I use mine: My MIDI chain is ES5 => Voluum => other MIDI pedals. ES5 sends program change commands to the Voluum to select Voluum presets. I have specific Voluum presets to send MIDI expression to A. my Line6 M5, B. my Strymon Timeline and C. my ProStage Remote Wah. The ES8, other than the ES5, has analog expression outputs. So with the ES8, it could also work to have a MIDI Chain Voluum=>ES8=>possibly other MIDI pedals; with the Voluum permanently sending MIDI expression on the ES8 MIDI Rx channel on a fixed CC# (say, CC#1) to the ES8, and the ES8 routing that expression info to various MIDI or analog expression out destinations via Assigns, programmable by Patch. I never did this, so I cannot comment on how good this would work. You may wanna check my blog articles on the ES5 (many info in there applies to the ES8, too) and the Voluum: theguacamolexplosion.eu/

Hey dude! Your video helped me decide to buy a Vollum. In addition to its own effects, I plan to control my Line 6 M5 via MIDI. Do you know if you can control a Zoom MS series pedal through the Voluum's midi USB port?
@TheGuacamoleXplosion
@TheGuacamoleXplosion 4 года назад
Thanks! Unfortunately, I guess it’s not possible to control another pedal via the Voluum’s USB port; Voluum would have to act as a USB host then, and I think it cannot do that.

They should have added a wah
@TheGuacamoleXplosion
@TheGuacamoleXplosion 3 года назад
internal wah would definitely be cool ... but I think they already kinda maxed out what they could fit into this pedal (maybe if they cooperated with Chase Bliss Audio, who are experts in making digitally controlled analog audio pedals really small, this could happen). Still, typically, most people use wahs very early in their signal chains (before drive pedals, with the possible exception of fuzz), and volume pedals at a rather late place, right before delay and reverb. So, combining analog Wah and Volume in one pedal would only really make sense if that pedal came with a loop to insert drive pedals.

@@TheGuacamoleXplosion will this allow me control Meris Enzo over midi? I would like to use it to control f.e. Mix knob . I think expression pedals are made to do that, but I am not sure if midi foot controller can do it as well, to fluently control Mix value. Thanks for clarification. I never used expression pedal or midi controller.
@mdl12321
@mdl12321 3 года назад
@@TheGuacamoleXplosion and 2nd question .. is the midi controller functionality preset related? can I f.e. save to different presets different knobs or internal parameters that I want to fluently control and recall it from memory of Voluum pedal without need to connect it to computer in order to switch its midi function?
@TheGuacamoleXplosion
@TheGuacamoleXplosion 3 года назад
@@mdl12321 yes and yes. The Meris Enzo can be controlled via MIDI CCs, there’s a full list in the Enzo manual. Mix on the Enzo would be CC#18. The Voluum can send MIDI CCs. And for each Voluum preset, you can program which CC# it will send, on which MIDI channel, and with which minimum and maximum values. So you can have Voluum preset 10 control Mix on the Enzo, Voluum preset 11 control delay feedback (CC#27) on the Enzo, and Voluum preset 12 control some other parameter on another MIDI-fied pedal. The only thing the Voluum can NOT do MIDI expression wise is send two different CC parameters at the same time. So, you could not adjust Mix on your Enzo and, say, delay feedback on a Strymon Timeline at the same time.
@anjamen85
@anjamen85 2 года назад
@@TheGuacamoleXplosion So can I ask a dumb one?You dont need a midi controller to use a Voluum as a midi expression pedal if you set it up in computer editor program as you described? Did I get that right?
