The Sony 14mm F1.8 GM is impressively small and sharp. We used it for astrophotography and tested it side-by-side with astrophotographer Vladimir Kabanov's Sigma 14mm F1.8 Art. But don't worry, we shot the new Sony around the streets of Calgary to test sunstars, bokeh, and more.

Excellent! Great to see some astro work included in lens testing as stars are the most demanding subjects and show up aberrations easily. But putting the camera on a tracker is the best way to test as any star trailing can mimic lens aberrations and can often be worse at the corners of a frame, just as off-axis aberrations would. I’ve just been testing the IRIX 15mm vs Rokinon 14mmSP vs Sigma 14mm Art vs Venus Optics 15mm. Would have loved to have included the Sony G-Master! Clear skies!

Hello Vladimir. I'm going to visit Kamchatka this summer, so for that purpose i want to buy a good prime lens for landscapes, time-laps, low light and astrophotography. Which lens would you reccomend more : Sony 20mm F1.8 G or Sony 24mm F1.4 GM? And one more question: which software are you using for stacking static shots?
@vladimirkabanov617
@vladimirkabanov617 3 года назад
Hello Vladimir (great name btw :) ), my personal choice would be 20mm f1.8. I have shot with a 24mm focal length a lot (though on a different system) and I always wanted something just a little wider. But this is just "my eye" - best thing to do is try both if there is a possibility. For the Sony system both lenses are absolutely great for optical quality and will both shine for the applications you've mentioned!

You’re not throwing away megapixels when cropping unless you plan to print really large. The only reason for cameras to have as many megapixels is to crop or to print large. Other wise they could have much larger photosites that would considerably improve dynamic range and high ISO performance.

For infinity use like astro, don't forget to focus away from the center, at aps-c corners or even more away. You will get higher overall sharpness bur center will be slightly softer (it's too sharp anyway if you focus center and corners look bad in that case). My copy is centered perfectly but it has aome field curvature behaviour. Do some trial and error to find the sweet spots. 14mm takes patience to use anyway.

Hello Vladimir. Hope you are well. What are your thoughts on adding a tracking mount to facilitate longer exposures of the night sky with lower ISO, composited with static ground image.
@vladimirkabanov617
@vladimirkabanov617 3 года назад
Thanks for the question! I absolutely think that tracking is a useful tool for landscape astro, especially when shooting over 24mm focal lens. With that said, I was stunned to see how well you can stack static shots (no tracker) even at 70mm focal length on A7RIV, so its not that tracker is an absolute necessity to shoot this kind of astrophotography. For me personally, if I had all the money in the world I'd be buying a tracker myself, but for now I am completely happy with results I can get (in terms of balancing star trailing and noise) with just a good serdy tripod :) One thing to keep in mind is that, even with a tracker, the camera sensor will not like very long exposures (say over 1 minute). You will start seeing hot pixels everywhere, and weird artifacts around the frame edge. So even with a tracker, my understanding is that folks shoot a series of shorter exposures (say 30 seconds) and then again stack those together. In this sense, a tracker is an added step into the workflow. I hope this helps!

Should've went deeper in comparing the in-focus out-focus blur/bokeh as well as the vignetting differences for the same objects on the tripod as this could be where the Sigma 14mm has the advantage. The other areas, the Sigma loses but then again who really does object photography with 14mm?

This is not a review, this is an advertisement (like most on youtube). Recommending someone this lens and a sony a7r for astrophotography is like recommending a big truck or a Harley for driving on a racetrack. You can do it, but you can do it better, faster and cheaper. If someone is thinking about astrophotography and buying a small tracker then this kit is a waste of money. It's funny you didn't show flat frames. The vignette in this combo, as in most bright prime ff lenses, especially small Sony primes is huge. You probably know that the vignetting correction is not lossless (noise, you lose many stars- more cropping for panorama) Why is the sigma 14mm 1.8 so big? Vignette: sigma on f4 - -0.5ev, sony on f4 -1.8 ev.

Thinking about Astro, with IBIS and digital image stabilizing and high pixel counts (A7Riv), if you add an external thingy with GPS through the smart hot shoe mount and some specialized programming it should be possible to take very long exposures, fully compensated for earth rotation. I guess that comes next year? ;-)
@alchemist_x79

I said something similar in the comments to the Undone one's video, but a year ago I would've been all over this lens, after shooting with the sigma 14-24 f/2.8 and Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 Heliar (those sunstars are to die for...) I have really come to the conclusion that 14 is, by and large, just too wide for every day use for me. I generally find myself using the 24-70 /f2.8 Art or 24 GM a lot more often, so I don't think I'll be picking this lens up, as impressive as it looks. Mad props to people that shoot ultra-wide, there's definitely an art all its own to it.

The G master only wins in the compact design department. The Sigma beats G master on everything else. the side by side image the stars appear to be further on the sony, while in the sigma the stars appear to be closer. But anyways I don't own either but based on what i seen i don't like the SUN STAR effect on everything supper annoying, to me SIGMA won this Challenge.
@vladimirkabanov617
@vladimirkabanov617 3 года назад
That's a really fair observation Dimanatti. I think this effect may be due to the way either lens handles distortion. Sony seems technically better, but it comes down to personal preference for such a wide field of view. After shooting both lenses, I still like my Sigma, you are right - the size of the Sony is the most compelling facto here for sure. The bottom line, both lenses produce great results :)

wow, I didn't see Sony coming out with a 14mm f1.8! As a Sigma 14mm f1.8 owner, which I primarily got for nightscape use, the size & weight saving of the GM is very impressive while retaining or even bettering the performance of the Sigma. The vignetting worries me a little though, I've used a Zeiss 21 f2.8 Distagon on the night sky before & the vignetting is so strong on that lens that I'm better off shooting with a Canon 24TSEii f3.5 most of the time.
@vladimirkabanov617
@vladimirkabanov617 3 года назад
The vignetting is what really stood out as a negative for me as well with the Sony. It makes sense really, I mean, something had to be sacrificed to get the size this small! But I totally also agree, I hate to admit that I would often leave my Sigma at home when going on a hike just due to size and weight.
@TheLDunn1
@TheLDunn1 3 года назад
@@vladimirkabanov617 I think the corners of the Zeiss 21 Distagon were more like f4 or even f5.6 & it was only the very centre that was f2.8. For nightsky work, I found it almost unusable. @vladimirkabanov617
@vladimirkabanov617 3 года назад
@@TheLDunn1 Makes sense. Ive played around with corrections in lightroom, just qualitatively corners looked like they needed at least 1-1.5 stop correction to start looking like Sigma (both wide open). So quite a bit of extra noise there if you want to even out the exposure. For many shots its not a big deal, and with my edits I often add a vignette anyways. Which lens (or lenses) are you using with the FX3?

Sony is onto another winner after 24GM. The 35GM and 50GM although very good, lacks the wow factor 24GM had. Ideally my Sony setup with all primes would be 14GM 24GM 50APO Lanthar 85DG DN, 135Batis. It'd be hard to find a lineup of lenses from any brand better corrected at this size weight price and practicality.

Hello, would you mind elaborating on what you exactly mean by "wow factor"?
@frankluo230

@@princeharbinger 24GM is a landmark in Sony history. It undoubtedly surpassed all older competitors in image quality and size weight. Til today there hasn't been a Nikon Canon Panasonic 24mm F1.4 for mirrorless to challenge it. At its announcement, Sony was so proud that not only 24GM had a single product announcement by itself, but also Sony arranged the entire Sony camp, ambassador group a trip to explore the lens. It literally wowed the photo world. In other GM primes, the gap is much closer.

Sony started the full frame mirrorless revolution in 2013 and now is the undisputed king in photography. Sony has the upper with a fast growing variety of e-mount lenses which is becoming nearly equal to the variety of Canon EF mount and Nikon F mount lenses. In serious photography the lenses are more important than cameras and Sony knows that. Sony will continue to introduce new full frame lenses designed for mirrorless cameras faster than any other lens manufacturer. Sony has the impetus while Canon and especially Nikon are five years behind. Also Sigma and Tamron were reluctant the first years with full frame e-mount lenses but now are very focused on e-mount more than with any other mount. You may call me Sony fan boy but this is the reality.

I feel people at Fuji are very worried. Sony has been on a tear lately, while Fuji's crop system is stagnating. There's nothing comparable to what Sony is offering, and all the other brands who are in FF mirrorless are also killing it. Tough times for Fuji shooters. Time to make a decision.

The earth moves. ? Are you sure about that ? I like the night shots. Thanks for doing the video.
@atarkus8
@atarkus8 2 года назад
Yeah that was amusing. I mean technically sure, the earth is moving through space, but not at a speed that would show up in his 15 second exposures. And the stars moving... that would take centuries to pick up at that focal length. It's of course the rotation of the earth that limits the exposure time.
