Excellent review as usual! I have the 12-24 F2.8 and love the sharpness of the lens, in fact it lives on my A7R4 and am always amazed at how sharp my pics are...the only thing is it is a "heavy" lens, so am really interested in the 14 F1.8, especially when I'm hiking around in the Sierras...so, you review was very helpful. Thank you!

Do you only have this "motion blur" effect at extreme close-ups wide open or also at closer than landscape objects, like taking a picture wide open of a whole car from a low perspective view? Love your reviews, looking at them for a long time and helped my decision in many lenses I bought for the Sony system.

That image of the leaf is really great, a very nice demonstration of this lens' attributes. A coma test would have been ideal, but I understand the weather was not cooperative. There are ways of simulating small light points which you could use in the future, should similar conditions prevail. Lenstip use a red LED in their tests, perhaps you could investigate the feasibility of this?

A SUPERB review!! Great that you covered far and near and the test lab. The ultra wide is best for close subjects and wide backgrounds but you showed some that I have never done. Shame no astro. The problem with 14mm's in the past from Rokinon to the Sigma is pincushion distortion best seen with a star capture where stars are elongated in corners especially with the milky way at left of frame being to the southeast. 2.8 is good but 4 helps best. What happens is things at sides are wider than at center. To see if pincushion distortion use Capture One it has a pincushion correction and look at the ground/foreground it will change while stars go to pinpoint, have used with old rokinon 14 and get the MW arch with a level MW. It has been cloudy also here BUT what I have seen in photos this lens looks as good as the 20 and 24. You showed detail unseen with other 14's but like the 20mm detail of the MW has more depth and stitching of panos are no problem when shooting over the ocean. Thank You also for the review of the rear filters also good for the 1224 f/4. In comparing a holder is $500 and each filter $200, this a bargain. Just carry a clear trash bag to remove lens and change filters if out and about, saves sensor dust.

I was speaking with my sister (who is a pro photographer for an auction house) and I asked her if she would buy the 14mm GM, the 16-35 GM, or the 12-24 GM. Her opinion was that the fast prime is the best option of the three - you can crop on a high res body (I'm using an Alpha 1) if you want to get closer, and how often are you realistically going to need the 12 or 13 mm length of the 12-24? To her mind (and mine, based on her reasoning) this seems like a great value compared to those choices, especially if you shoot on a high res body. Great review, I'm looking to pick mine up this weekend.
@DustinAbbottTWI

That is excellent reasoning. It would be my choice of the three, too.

Excellent lens. The only issue I have with ultra wides is corner stretch due to rectilinear correction - but nothing can be done about this - it's the nature of optics. However, I sometimes prefer a fisheye lens for this reason.

Dustin, thank you for the excellent reviews. After watching many of your reviews the past few weeks, I have 1 question and 1 video request. Question: I just bought into a camera system (Sony) for the first time. I have the Sony A7C, the 20mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8. Being that I got two odd starter lenses, what are your top 3 focal length suggestions for rounding out a "5 lens rotation" for a video-centric shooter with a documentary-style emphasis? Viewer request: Your top 10 lenses for video and top 10 lenses for photography.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 года назад
The 35mm F1.8 is a popular video lens. I also think the Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 is a very, very useful video lens. If you want telephoto, the Tamron 70-180mm is also a good addition to that kit.

Great review! Are you doing a comparison between this lens and the Sigma 14mm art? If the Sony lens do better in most parameters than the Sigma lengs, it's a miracle to put all those specs into its light weight!

@DustinAbbottTWI 3 года назад
I won't be doing such a comparison. I don't have the Sigma, and the Sony was a loaner that has already been returned.
@phillewis2524
@phillewis2524 3 года назад
Thanks for the in-depth review. I have been weighing this vs the Sigma 14/1.8 (and thank you for reviewing that lens). There has definitely been downward price pressure on the Sigma since the Sony lens hit the streets. I just got a counter offer on Greentoe $400 lower than suggested retail on the Sigma lens. Now the eternal conundrum- the best use of limited resources. Thank you for the straight info on both lenses, really helps in making a decision. I will use the lens mainly for astrophotography so the size and weight is not as much of a consideration as it would otherwise be. I am still using my Tamron 15-30/2.8 held over from my A-mount days for most landscape work and I am still very happy with it. Not to wax philosophical, but how good is good enough? Always a hard question to answer.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 года назад
Hi Phil, I would be tempted by the upgrade from the Tamron to the Sony because of the size, but not the Sigma for the same reason. If you're happy with the Tamron for now, just wait for the inevitable sales on the Sony.
@phillewis2524
@phillewis2524 3 года назад
@@DustinAbbottTWI Good advice. However I decided to buy the Sony 14mm now. Even though the logical side of me says the cost savings of the Sigma is worth it, the size and quality of the lens along with the mirrorless native design proved irresistible. I don't think I will be disappointed in the long run.

I finally got some clear skies, took the 14mm f/1.8 out into the night! I put on my A7iii first and the images were superb but There were dove stars from side to side in post at 100%. The next night I put on the A7Siii and it was so great and no dove stars. I learned about the March firmware 4.0 for A7iii and installed, dove stars no longer. I have had the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 for a couple years and coma's wide open always a problem and best at f/2.8. Even the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 has pincushion really bad. All that is in the past and have seen it all for the past 6 years trying to go wider. BUT ALWAYS the Sony Lenses have been superb from the early 1018 f/4 (1527) or (12-18 on full frame), 1635 f/4 and the 1224 f/4 all great!!! But now the the super fast ultra wide 14mm f/1.8. I shoot today with the NPF rule for camera model at the accurate SS due to many years of star elongation in corners. First why an ultra wide and fast, when you first capture the early season MW in landscape you get the MW streaming to the left, but you want more so you go to the 16mm, then 12mm and even 10mm. But there is distortion in some makes. That is where panoramas come in, the overlap got rid of it but software has a problem stitching also. Sony came out with the 24 f/1.4 then the 20 f/1.8 both superb and even greater doing panos. Now the 14mm f/1.8, a miracle lens equal with the 24 and 20!! The thing that will simply amaze is the sharpness both near and far (miles far) once focus is done. In post at 400% a lit city 20 plus miles away is seen clearly and individual radio towers and lights are pinpoint and a ship at anchor on the horizon deck and stack can be made out with running lights pinpoint. These three lenses shine best at portrait view panos!! A June MW goes vertical after midnight so the way part is high over head, BUT you can stay level and capture the top (that is way overhead and toward your back) and do a 180+ pano and capture not just a MW arch BUT the largest roller coaster looking MW, all with pinpoint stars and sharpness/clarity that captures the cloud part from horizon to the top and back to the horizon. And even PS and LR can stitch if enough dehaze/clarity/texture done to all images. Now the truly amazing roller coaster image is if you use the Kase Star Glow filter (not available in 150x150 for an external fit on front of 1224 or 14mm lens (yet)) but on the 20mm a screw on filter holder 100x100 the big stars glow And stitching in PTGui requires no extra points, it just stitches your pano. Now why the 14mm over the 1224 f/2.8 @ 14mm, the 14 is small/lightweight and the difference of 12 and 14 small. Yes you will use a faster SS with the 1.8 than the 2.8 and getting less light! The other nice thing is the less ISO to control highlights and get detail and with a Sony shadow detail is even better the lower the ISO. In manual mode set the SS/ISO to get a M.M. of +0.7 it will be perfect ETTR and a bright image to play with!!! Thanks again to Sony!! I am a hobbyist not a seller. But here is some proof for those with cloudy skies, not perfect but just enjoy!!! www.edgenauxsphotography.org/Photography/2021/i-8DfFNFq/A www.edgenauxsphotography.org/Photography/2021/i-gjpbVXB/A www.edgenauxsphotography.org/Photography/2021/i-KvGKzrZ/A

Lens-tip states that coma results are pretty worse that showed by Sony in its press presentation. Owning a 16-35GM, my only reason to but this lens is night photography, so I'd like to have another independent reviewer results.

Too expensive for a niche lens... In addition (forgive me) but I have most of the Sony GM lineup but consistently feel the lenses render in a sterile or at least underwhelming way. Technically they are excellent, but they seem to lack character (in my opinion, which of course is a very subjective perspective). For example, I own the Sony 24 GM and the Zeiss Batis 25, but far prefer the rendering from the Zeiss... Thank you, Dustin, for your superlatively good and thorough reviews.

Fair enough, thought I feel differently about the recent GM lenses. I think the 35 and 50mm along with the 135mm are pretty special.

I've watched your definitive reviews for the 14mm GM, the 20mm G and the 24mm GM... I find it a tough choice between the 20mm and the 24mm. Used prices between the two are very close together. *Anyone wanna help me decide* ? Obviously, astro is going to benefit from F1.4, but sadly, its shrinking your view into the universe over the 20mm *Why can't I have the 20mm with F1.4* . . .? brighter and smaller, darker and bigger, why not brighter and bigger ;-) - I like the really wide and dynamic field of the 14mm GM. Very cool shots you took! - I like the 20mm better though, because its just that much more crisp! I don't know If I'd really get the benefit of the incredible sharpness with the A7C's sensor - The 24mm F1.4 GM seems even sharper to me and at max aperture no less!
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 года назад
Making that choice is difficult, for sure. If you can find a 24mm GM for close to the 20mm's price, that's worth doing.

Did you notice if the lens was acting sharper in the real world landscapes, where the actual scene is more far than your chart test. You mention this 'motion blurr effect'... In your chart test F 1,8 looks like suffering from this, when you are actually still bit close up. the F 16 looks much better. Maybe because this lens is having issues wide open at close up?

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thank you Dustin for your time. So the conclusion afterwards, is that the 12-24mm is the optical superior, but in real world scenarios, where you doesn’t compare, then you won’t miss anything on the 14mm prime

@Bayonet1809
@Bayonet1809 3 года назад
The test chart setup you employ seems rather useless for an assessment of this lens' sharpness. Out of interest how far away is the sensor plane from the chart for a lens of this focal length in your tests? My inclination, were I attempting comparative tests of ultra-wide angle lenses, would be to place an enlarged version of your Siemens star target in each corner and midpoint of the frame at a distance of 10-15 m, tilting and swinging the camera and refocusing for each. Of course such a test would not demonstrate the presence or lack of field curvature, so a possible addition would be to use R. Cicala's quick and dirty solution of a clarity boosted high spacial frequency scene (grassy field/rough pavement) to discern the shape of the field of focus. Thinking about this more: some of these techniques could also be employed to better judge more normal focal length lenses at different focus distances, by varying the size of the target and thus keeping the relative size in image space constant. A lot of work though.
@DustinAbbottTWI

My testing is far from useless and in this case is well in accordance with the MTF results...and backed up by many real world results. With all due respect, I've reviewed hundreds of lenses and am very well respected in this industry for delivering accurate results, so your criticism (or at least the language used) seems ill founded.
@Bayonet1809
@Bayonet1809 3 года назад
@@DustinAbbottTWI I was not claiming that your testing is useless, just that your test chart setup (and associated methodology) is useless for assessing sharpness (and distortion and vignetting) for this particular lens, due to its ultra-wide focal length. You yourself admitted limitations to your testing methodology in deriving a comprehensive and real-world applicable appraisal of such a wide angle lens, "I'm not sure this is entirely indicative at this close...". It is well understood that lens sharpness, vignetting and distortion is dependent on focal distance, a fact which you allude to in this video. The fact that you also show performance in real world images is, (I presume) because you understand that your testing methodology is not comprehensive enough to get a full understanding of a lens' performance, and that fact is especially so for an ultra-wide lens such as this. What MTF results are you referring to? Sony only demonstrates MTF wide open and at f/8, and their numbers are based on geometric analysis, not measured with an optical bench. As such Sony's MTF results are an approximation only, and hardly a good comparison point to ascertain validity. Perhaps you refer to Lenstip's testing? But they report MTFs in the centre and at the APS-C edge to be greater in the Sony 14/1.8 than the Samyang 35/1.8 (their most recently tested lens), while your review of the Samyang shows its performance on your test chart to be better than the Sony 14/1.8 across the frame. It is precisely the discrepancy between real world results and the results from your test chart that I am concerned with, and which you have also said are possibly not consistent, but you now claim that real-world results back up your test chart results? With equal respect, the number of lenses you have tested is not relevant to the accuracy of your tests. Neither does the degree to which your tests are perceived to be accurate by those whose feedback you are aware of have any bearing on how accurate your tests actually are, particularly in edge cases such as this large aperture ultra-wide angle lens. The methodology I suggested is potentially an improvement over your current methodology, but I can understand that it would involve too much work for minimal advantage in all but edge cases such as this lens, and thus in an effort to maintain consistency and provide a useful appraisal of a lens you do a fine job. I would still appreciate knowing how far away the sensor plane was from the chart in your tests of this lens. It is important to explain one's methodology to allow for replication.
