I’m BACK! Took a month break off social and felt super recharged!! Hope everyone’s been staying cool. It’s been hot in Cali lately and I’m sweating my bum off shooting all these b-roll 😅 What’s everyone’s plan for the 4th of July weekend?
I went with the 14 GM. My 16-35 GM is sometimes too slow for what I need and the 12-24 G was even slower. When I did use the 12-24 G I seemed to use 14 more than 12 and if I needed less wider than 14, I would just go back to the 16-35. Having a smaller, faster, lighter, and closer focusing lens in my bag replaced the 12-24 G for me.
I recently invested in the 14mm, and I am absolutely blown away. The Wide angle and speed have produced phenomenal photos! I contemplated the 16-35mm vs 14mm, but for the price of the 16-35mm, I could buy the 14mm, 35mm and 50mm. So that made more sense to me.
Glad to see your videos on my subscriptions tab again Jason! The 14mm GM looks awesome and definitely a contender to the Batis 18mm. Welcome back and looking forward to watching more of your videos again!
I just started using the 20G on my a6400, and I'm starting to think that it might be the best all-around setup out there. I thought long and hard about ordering the 14GM, and I have the 24GM in my work kit, but it ultimately came down to weight. I wanted something that I could easily transition between vlogging, shooting some stills, pop on a tripod to do an interview style video, and pack away easily. I supplement that with a couple of CCTV lenses (16mm f1.4 and 50mm f1.4) that get me some dope visuals. I still think I might add the 14 to my collection someday, but for now that 20G is working out great for me.
@@MollyFitzBrown i don't typically mind carrying around that much weight, but i figure i would rather "spend" the weight on extra battery options. If i can carry slightly lighter (but still very good) glass, but have a camera that i don't have to change the battery on in a whole day of shooting, and both rigs end up weighing roughly the same, i'd have to go with the longer battery life. I'd rather have a few hundred more shots at the end of the day.
@@Hobbies4Hire that makes sense. I do a lot of handheld vlogging so I like as light as possible but looking for best quality for the weight :) the a7c has had great battery life for me so far!
@@MollyFitzBrown i'm totally jealous. The a6600 and a7c are both super tempting to me primarily because of that newer battery. I can shoot with the a6400 for about an hour before i need to swap batteries.
OK, maybe I’m late to the table hear, but wanted to say “great video,” I feel your struggle. I don’t do a lot of video, and I don’t have the experience you do with so many lenses, but I thought I’d add some comments from more of a stills perspective. I’ve rented the 14 a couple times for astro photography (in Borrego & Death Valley) and loved it! It compliments the 16-35 GM very well for that use, and I found I preferred the 14 GM. I used it for landscape too, but found the 16-35 GM on the camera much more often, because of the sweet, sweet focal range. That said, I was able to get some effects I just couldn’t at 16mm. The 14 iGM is an amazing lens for architecture too - I only shot a few houses, all the while, wishing I had it when shooting cathedrals in France. The thing that struck me most is that it is so sharp for such a wide angle. I am a horrible pixel peeper on my A7RIV images, and this sharpness instilled confidence to use it in so many cases. I’ve agonized for a while whether to get the 20mm or the 14mm, and have decided the 14mm is definitely the next lens on my buy list.
Hey Jason, I'm a huge fan of your channel!! I just bought the 14 1.8 GM for my a7c and a7s3. Cant wait for it arrive! By the way 4:08 cracks me up even time I watch it (and I've watched this video many times! )
I actually own that sigma lens for 1.5 year and had to sell it with 20mm 1.8 G or get this one, depending on you but on my personal experience for using it a lot, its quite heavy and my wrist in a long term would suffer because I started feeling the pain. but with quality in terms of sharpness and focus, you wont regret it. Another reason I sold it is also because I can put filters on it. But yea goodluck, its a never ending debate tbh.
@@panoskonomi2875 I dont have the 14gm but would defintely go for it because when I had 14-24, I rarely zoom in anyways depending on the type of project you have but so far I have the 20 1.8 g lens due to cost and filter thread. so no regret
Thank you so much for making this video, it was really well explained and very helpful! I've just purchased it after I watched your video! Next month I'm going to use it for astrophotography and hopefully northern lights!
Looks more compact than the 20mm f1.8 and it gives you the ultra wide view that Apple and Samsung smartphone flagship have. 14mm. Meaning you don't have to keep stepping back to try and get everything in frame.
Loved the video. I think the extreme wideness of 14 creates a lot of peripheral movement with even a little hand movement when you record videos that could be distracting
I have the 25 and 85 Batis, and the 21, 35 and 50 Loxia and a bunch of ZE and Contax Zeiss. Zeiss is hard to beat, and AF is quick. I plan on buying the 14 GM. I need a WA.
I found the 10-18 has so much distortion even on the sample footage you posted. I was fortunately able to get a 12-24gm for less than the 14GM. I also came up on the 16-35gm for a ridiculous price. Not sure which one to keep or both as it seems like a lot of overlap. Also have the 20g which was my go to lens but I’ve found the 16-35gm has quickly been staying on my camera. Would love your 2cents of wisdom.
@@hamroz1 Lot has changed since last year. I did end up selling the 16-35 and using the 12-24 more. Reasons were also I have an A7IV which uses crop mode making the 12-24 an 18-36 which is just an awesome focal range overall. If you watch my channel, I also sold both my 20/35mm to get the 24mm GM. There’s a lot more buying and selling but as of now, I do own the 14GM, 20G, and 24GM. 14GM is awesome as it has very little distortion and still gives me wider than a 24mm even in APSC mode and with active steady shot on making it a very versatile. Now owning an A7Siii more recently, I’m able to fully utilize the wide angle even more so. But it does almost make my 20mm redundant honestly which I might sell. But the 20mm I got super cheap and it’s still such a sweet spot for a focal range and it’s IQ.
@@sneakergearz ahaha yeah we all do. I’m selling the 20g coz I’m getting the 24gm for the same price. And instead I’m thinking of getting the 14 1.8 for the wider focal length. Just couldn’t make up my mind if the 16-35 pz is a better option instead of the 14.
Liked the video for sure, I dig the more casual feel, its like we are hanging out and your telling me about the lens. Any thoughts on how well the sun shade protects the lens optics? I always stress about scratching my lenses. Do you feel concerned with this one?
If you want a lightweight 12mm get the APS-C E 10-18mm (15-17mm) f/4 OSS but in full frame mode 12mm to 18mm (18mm if you remove the rear light shield) it has screw on filters and with the new Haida Filters rear filter holder you get front and rear. It is so small too! Trey Ratcliff did a review in 2013!!!!
Great video Jason, I'm definitely in the same predicament and am looking for a different ultrawide option from my 16-35 f4. Great to hear your take on the subject!
Could this replace a GoPro? I know its like using a bazooka to kill a fly... however that fly overheats and eats video footage on a daily basis... I just got an 18mm full frame and it doesn't look wide enough to get all my fishing rods in the frame.
Hope my 14mm GM will be delivered tomorrow. I say hopefully because my Fedex delivery guy is the worst. I've never had a lens as wide as 14mm as a permanent part of my kit. So, I'm excited to have a new focal length to play with.
Actually for vlogging the Samyang 18mm Fe f/2.8 is an option although I believe the 20mm G is a great all round lens the 18mm Samyang is far more budget friendly
I would love to have this lens.......I love wide landscapes and stuff. Woot saw some Sony Camera Camp Shots!! #onetimeatcameracamp Great video as always dude!
Laowa 12mm f2.8 doesn't even get a mention?! That extra 2mm is stopping me from jumping on the 14, but it looks so clean I might have to give it a try.
Where can I find the filter mount bracket at 13:10? Is there one for 82mm, and if so does it vignette at wider focal lengths? I always enjoy your videos btw Jason 👍
Please what settings do you use for your lens and how do you grade it. I Love how the colours pop. I believe you use a Filter for your lenses as well. Any suggestions?
Great video Jason. I just purchased a new Sigma 14-24 2.8 for my full frames and boy, I can't speak on how much I love it. Here's a question not related to the video. I recently traded my A9 for an A7r3 (fantastic, and of course, I got some money back). I'm loving the A7r3 so much now, that I'm considering trading in my A73 for another body. What do you think? Keeo the A7iii or trade it?
It's late 2024 and I am debating between the ZEISS 18mm and the new Laowa 10mm Autofocus. I just think the Laowa is so cool at $799 but I can get the ZEISS for about $425-$475 used. This is my Ultrawide debate before I go to Japan for the holidays.
@@JasonVong Thanks Jason! I think I'll go with the Zeiss 18mm for now using one of your MPB referral links. It's always seemed like a solid choice and its so light! I appreciate you responding to my message on a three year old video. If you're in Japan over the holidays and want to meet up with some industry animators, feel free to reach out. ;) Thanks for all you do!
HMMM The 20mm G is closer to a 19mm with an aperture of 1.8 compare to the 18mm Batis 2.8.. seems the clear choice would be the 20mm G... I think that Zeiss partnership has Jason a little biased 👀😉🤣 I would love to see a direct comparison video though!
Great lens. Got mine yesterday. Only thing is I noticed the inside elements of the lens moves back and forth when you tilt the lens but when I attached it back to the camera and turn it on, it disappears. Is this normal?
Yes, that's normal. Lenses have moving parts (duh) and the 14mm has some big and on itself heavy glass pieces inside. Same thing with a lot of other lenses (quite prominent in the 135mm gm, too). Activating the camera: The focus unit works by applying power to an electromagnet. No current (deactivated camera) and the unit is "free floating", hence moving. Absolutely normal.
Lets be real about this .... the manual aperture ring makes this lens worth buying all by itself ... if there were no other positives just everything else equal
Hey man, quick opinion appreciated , looking for an ultra-wide for my Sony A7 IV ; torn between Sony 14mm 1.8 and Sigma 14-24 ; both are somewhere in the same price range that I can afford ; please advice
What other lenses do you have? For example I already have Tamron 17-28 so I would prefer 14mm as it is almost 1 1/3 stops faster than sigma. Plus it is a sony 14mm is significantly lighter and smaller..
I'm just wondering if it's too wide for my needs 🤔 I have a 24-70, and I find the 24 not wide enough, and I think a 20mm would be enough. So, when would I ever use anything wider? Probably for only certain situations, so I don't know if it's worth it. My work is outdoors in nature, hiking, camping, backpacking... I shoot for myself and brands, and idk. I used to use my 10-20mm on a FF, but could only use it at 14mm at the widest, but that was for real estate
Sorry but Zeiss 18mm not used it to much focus motor Failure… mainly used in manual mode for astro. Won’t touch a Zeiss lens again wouldn’t recommended
I just change to a lighter smaller Samyang 18mm F2.8 for $299 from B&H, and just like you, I found out I only used 17mm most of the time, therefore I’m selling my Tamron 17-28mm, it’s a good lens, but I want a even smaller and lighter lens for my vlogging
