In this video I talk about Sony's top of the range wide angle lens, the 16-35mm F2.8. This lens is made for the landscape, architectural and event photographer in mind. It is compatible with Sony's full frame A7 and A9 range of cameras but can also be used on APSC cameras like the A6XXX range although the effective focal length will change to a 24mm-52.5mm.

I love them. I'm currently a E mount user but I am trying to put money aside for a A99II and it's f2.8 Trinity later on. I'm really curious to see how a DSLT performs

Yees Finally, I've been using this lens and I gotta say it's sooo sharp. But I hardly found chromatic aberration, Sony has done an amazing job with this lens. As always great review.

Thanks for your feedback. I found the CA in extreme conditions but it really shouldn't be a problem in most cases.

Hi John, great video and review... In terms of image quality say at the focal length that the 12-24 F4 & the 16-35 F2.8 overlap, and both at F4 or 5.6, would it be safe to assume that the GM would still be better ? but by how much in terms of sharpness, etc..And if to buy both lens, would they compliment each other ?? thanks!

Over three years since it came out, I’ve finally pulled the trigger on this lens. I found one for AU$2,300, brand new, so I couldn’t resist. It should arrive on Tuesday so I’m looking forward to it, like a little kid looking forward to Christmas!

@@JohnSisonPhotography thanks for the interest 🙂 It turned up on Monday, which is great as it was posted from QLD on Thursday by regular mail. Apparently the seller bought it and a 55mm for a project, but the project fell through and he already had a copy of the 16-35. It was brand new, with the seal intact on the box, so I think it was a great deal. The lens is amazing, I’m so happy with it. The weight is about the same as my 24-105mm F4, just a bit larger, so it’s no problem to use as a walk around for me. I think this will be the lens that sits on my camera most of the time now, dislodging the 24-105. I walked around the city for about 3 hours on Wednesday afternoon and it was a joy to use. The light wasn’t the best, but I got a few shots I was happy with. One of the MLC building, long exposure of GPO & fountain in Martin Place and MCA & Harbour Bridge from Circular Quay.

Hey I was going to ask about help on lens along with a crane set up so I think i only have enough in my budget for the crane plus I can try to get the extra money BUT reason why I wanted to go with the plus is because of the POV mode but looks like the 2 came out with the update. As for lens I was looking into the 16-35mm F2..8 GM or the 24-70 F2.8 GM (not sure which one :/) In a nutshell not sure which to go with the body will be the a7III and I am probably going to get a 85 F1.8 in the summer time. Question is will it be okay to have this set up on the crane plus? I do video editing for my gym. The gym has a lot of windows that you can basically see the whole gym from outside so if my back is towards the windows i get great shots but as soon as i point toward it my shot gets so dark. I currently have the 16-70mm F4 which is like a 24-105 with a sony a5100 lol Major upgradesss I will be taking videos for local businesses basically food places lol and I vlog for the tubess Anyone please help with my situation lol

I'd love to have 12-24 F4 and 35mm f1. 4. But changing lens during the trip is really pain. 1635 f2. 8 should cover most of my shots. Plus A6500 + 105mm f1.4 sigma will be perfect set for going to a trip.

Hey John, if you were to shoot mostly travel/outdoor/daytime videos, would you go for the 16-35 f4 zeiss or f2.8 gm? Thanks!

I have the 16-35mm f4 and it works well in outdoor daytime but suffers greatly in low light conditions

Good video. As people debate the wider/slower 12-24 is the filter issue. The bulbous front element precludes standard filters. I love ND filters to blur out ocean waves, etc. the 16-35 allows this, plus wide for poor lighting or Astro work. Not easy!
@JohnSisonPhotography
@JohnSisonPhotography 5 лет назад
Thanks for your comment. Its a bit of a tradeoff but yes. It depends on your type of shooting and what you prefer in a lens cause everyone is different.

Hi John, nice review as always - in most of the terms a agree with you, but the downside of the lens are backlit situations - you have to fight with haze and flares, but overall it is a very good lens
@JohnSisonPhotography
@JohnSisonPhotography 6 лет назад
Fair enough. Thanks for the feedback. In those situations its a bit difficult to tackle that unless you use a circular polariser filter.

John, my copy is a little soft at 35mm f2.8 both in the center and in the corners. It gets pretty sharp at f4. Starting at 28mm down to 16mm it's pretty sharp wide open. Was that the case with your copy? Thanks for the review.
@satar9

DXO says it is weaker at 35mm and performs best at 24mm

I rented this lens and am planning to buy it in a few months for my A7III. The thing that I was most impressed was the fact that even when wide open at 16 mm the edges were still extremely sharp which is something typically difficult to get from wide angle lenses. How does the 12 to 24 compare in terms of edge sharpness, and chromatic aberration??
@kamalazizi4481
@kamalazizi4481 6 лет назад
Does the 16-35f4 doing fine with a7rii ? Because i heard that you will get more megapixel with gm lens using the 42mp body. But does that justify the 1thousd dollar extra price or the zeis f4 will do just fine ?
@JohnSisonPhotography
@JohnSisonPhotography 6 лет назад
You don't get more megapixels with the 16-35mm lens. It doesn't matter what lens you use, as long as you're using the a7rii, it will always be 42. The lens itself can resolve the 42 megapixel sensor on the a7rii thats for sure and this was actually my go to lens for the travel which I absolutely loved!

Now thatcamera has gone and want to purchase Sony a7 r 4. can I request you to suggest proper lens.I found Sony 12-24 to be best for my purpose but it is not with Optical image stabiliser plus cannot use filter.How Is Sony 16-35 FE oss f4 g lens will it ser my purpose of landscapes and street shots? You can get a filter holder for the 12-24mm F4 lens if you need. The 16-35mm F4 is acceptable as well if you want a filter thread.

@amb86
@amb86 6 лет назад
John Sison , for me given that this review is quite some time after its initial release, lits of information about it is already out there, so i feel i learned nothing after watching like 60% of thr review, at which point i stopped. I so appreciate that you seem to accept positive criticism. Perhaps another way to go is to add more flair to your delivery ie Kai/Neistat. Otherwise if you are not doing anything on the technical aspect, no pixel peeping, with not much flair, and no timeliness to market, it basically renders this review quite useless. Hope this helps!
@amb86
@amb86 6 лет назад
John Sison you need like a theme and or an interesting idea. As you may have already seen in the review, one such idea is comparison, side by side, of the 1635z. As is, honestly, is just 'meh'.

I gladly give you a thumb down because you are starting with advertising. What a pitty. Is really annoing how desperate are the reviewers these days.
