How would your value perception change if u could have the sony for 810 euro and tamron for 860? (So some 60$ diff for cheaper sony)? I shooy stills only, tamrom is said to be with IQ close to 16-35GM in terms of shaprness etc..thx!

I own them both and after a few months with the Tamron I have not wanted to use the Sony. I like the IQ over the Sony. Color and contrast it better with the Tamron as is the control of light flair. The faster 2.8 comes in handy for video and it is much better on my gimbal because the focus is more center weighted. As far as possible dust getting into the lens I would use a lens filter on the front of the Tamron. Problem solved. You can’t do that with the Sony as dust can get in where it extends when zooming. I totally hate how easy the Sony’s paint can scratch off on the ribbed control rings. It’s like no lens I have ever owned. My Tamron still looks new. As I mentioned I have both and I alway grab the Tamron over the Sony. I also have the 28-75 Tamron so they pair up really nice. They both use the same filter size so that comes in handy as well. Especially when using variable ND filters for video.

Nice comparison and video. Its really hard to choose. I would like to see the same interrior shot that you do with sony, also with tamron, cause we can see the distortion better in both lenses.

You missed one important note, Sony Zeiss 16-35F4 image quality is really soft from 28-35 mm.

The Zeiss is about $950 from the Sony Store. Both lenses are in the same price range. My dream wide lens is the Zeiss 15-35. Shot with it once a few years go, it's a great performer.

For the price, i want the Sony to be better. But going by what I see here, the Tamron is absolutely the winner, hands down.

Great comparison. Have the 16-35 F4 and am quite satisfied with it. Though I also own the 28-75 Tamron, I would choose the 16-35 over the 17-28 after comparing both lenses. But as in your case, this is just a subjective thing. I do a lot of sunsets and just don't like the sunstars on the Tamron.

Great Video Stefan , I would love to see a comparison video on sony 12-24 f4 v the tamron 17-28. The lens comparison on mtf charts looked favourable towards the Sony but does this play out in the field? If you don't need filters and could afford the Sony would it be the better option?

I’m reading this on New Year’s Day 2021, and checked his sub count after reading your comment.... nice to see that @stefanmalloch has gained 15k subscribers in under a year! Congrats man! Ps. I’ve just bought the Sony 16-35 f4 lens, and was wondering if I should have bought the 17-28 tamron due to it being £150 cheaper and with an f2.8 aperture lens! However, based on your video I think I’ll stick with it as the bokeh didn’t look that different. I’d be keen to see the tamron in low light as my partner is into astronomy and wants to take photos with her telescope (and use my A7iii and lenses, so the tamron could be perfect - mind you, a 300mm lens is probably what she needs haha)

re. Build quality it's important to note that the Tamron has a weather sealing ring whereas the Sony doesn't (you mention this in the summary but not in the head to head earlier). It's rarely an issue for most though for me (mountain trekker) it is a valuable feature as I try to decide on a zoom to replace my primes to lighten my load.

Wasn't a very hard choice for me. It's the Tamron. For the price and value it's a no brainer. I love native gear. And I already have the Zeiss SEL 35mm f1.4, I needed a wider angle for real estate and this video help me. I found a new one on ebay for $679 with a 6 year warranty. I know for native lens enthusiasts. This will make things complicated but for someone who just wants to get the job done for a reasonable price. This is the lens to get. Can't wait for it to come in, brilliant review.

This was a really good comparison. I just did a solo review on the Tamron, this really furthers the point as to how nice it is that the tamron is $1300 cheaper

I love my Tamron 28-75mm but, I use neither the Sony nor the Tamron for my wide angle needs... I shoot with two cameras - usually an A6600 and an A7iii. My go to wide angle is the Samyang AF 14mm f/2.8 which gives me naturally 14mm with the full frame format and 21mm equivalent on the A6600... A also carry the Sony 70-350mm lens for most of my telephoto needs. If my project is shooting people, I will carry the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 and the Sony 85mm f/1.8. Alternating the lenses between full frame and crop bodies, that two body and two lens combo is very versatile...

Hey Stefan, how bad do you think the low light capabilities on the 16-35 would be when paired with an aps-c sensor? I'm thinking slower aperture + smaller sensor isn't a great combo, but wondering how much stabilization would actually help with that? I'm not expecting to shoot at night on aps-c or FF with the 16-35, I have 2.8 and 1.4 lenses for that, but I am hoping for a lens that does solid (stabilized) video work on aps-c and works well until the evening/sunset on a full frame sensor.

The only that can help is a higher iso. For aps-c I am using a 16mm 1.4 and 30mm 0.4 sigma prime wit ha sony 70-200mm F4. You can use the 70-200 till the sun isn't down, but after that, no way. Same would be with the 16-35mm on an apsc camera.

Amazing comparison. Long waited and long overdue. Sony pictures has amazing color tone though Tamaron is sharper slightly overall. Sony has better focal length. Tend to get softer at 35mm but still easily usable for portraits. Overall can't go wrong with either one of them. Just know that you can get a mint condition used Sony F4 lens for $850 range so its win-win. (not worth the full price of $1300) but worth every penny if you can get one used.

I'm using the sony 16-35 & comparing it to the Sony fe1.8 85mm its shit, the lens isn't sharp enough & too soft (for video) the f4 is big deal-breaker, have to do a proper test against the G master

Nice comparison. I want to buy wide angle lens for travel photography (landscape, architecture) but confused between Sony 16-35mm f/4 and Sigma - Art 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN. Which one you would suggest? Thanks.

Stefan Malloch Thanks. I think 16mm should be enough but sigma is 2.8 so sometimes I can use it for low light photography as well. And 16-35 f2.8 is costly than sigma. Do you recommend any other alternative ?

@@yogeshshelke5140 I would say the sigma is good, but the only issue is you cant put filters on it so be aware of that. The lens has a built in hood, so i would say either Tamron or F4 Sony is a good shout.

The sigma lens tbh is the perfect lens from the reviews I’ve seen. However, it only uses rear lens filters which are basically impossible to get where I live and cost about $200. Therefore, not really much of a choice and the tamron would win out. It’s not quite wide enough in some situations but if you can take a couple steps back it will do.

The Sony has better micro contrast. I favor using the Tammy for ease of use, general photography and professional work. If I wanted a special look, I'd use to Sony although it needs a lot of light to "shine" IMO.

Tamron had a big win with their 28-75mm f2.8, so, it makes a lot of sense for this 17-28mm to be views as its brother lens. Buying both lenses for less than the 16-35 f2.8 gmaster gives you a range of 17-75mm at f2.8 with very close performance and a size that is more comfortable .

Man it's hard to choose, i see everyone saying that Tamron is sharper, but i really need oss cause my mk1 doesn't have and I'm not really planning to upgrade the camera also, however, this lenses are wide and the shutter speeds can go to 1/16... I don't know, I'm stuck

Love your comparison video's, though on this one at the 5:14 mark (you probably already know this, but), you have the lens on the wrong side compared to the names above. = ) Not a big deal but had me a little confused until I realized why you put the check mark for performance on the Tamron after saying Sony. Anyway very good comparison and even though the Sony cost more. I have used the Tamron and really liked the images from it, but the range is too short for my liking. If I didn't use a w/a for real estate and need as wide as possible for small spaces (bathrooms and small bedrooms), I'd go with the Tamron. But because I do, it's the Sony.

Just come across this. One big thing missing. IBIS is significantly better with Sony rather than non Sony lenses. Say if you have the ZVE1 with gimbal like stabilisation (with a Sony lens, it’s much more jittery with the Tamron or any other 3rd party lens) and don’t want to take a gimbal, for run and gun, the Sony lenses are much better. The new PZ version of the Sony lens is fantastic, but you can get this older Sony half price of the PZ version if you go second hand so that can be a great buy.

The longer range of the Sony doesn't matter though since it is by far the weakest FL of this lens. Best compare at 28mm.

NEED a 16-28mm sigma contemporary vs 16-35mm sony f4 review. both within a $100 of each other. Maybe the savings are worth 7mm less? does 2.8 over 4 out weigh the 7mm loss ? So far no ones tolerable to watch their reviews

In performance the Tamron is sharper and better for low light. I would honestly suggest the Tamron for most people. Plus the weather sealing is better than the sony.

I expect Tamron to perform better than Sony, you don't seem to think so. Why are there so many people selling their Sony 16-35mm in the second-hand market, I think those are 2nd rated lenses owing to manufacturing 'defects'. The Zoom range of the Tamron puts me off buying this lens.
