Tony and Chelsea, really love your videos. You guys are far and away my favorite photography related people on youtube to watch... very informative and entertaining. As as someone else pointed out, with the A6000 you can mount the Sony/Zeiss FE55mm F1.8 natively on the camera which has an equivalent of 82.5mm which I imagine would be an amazing portrait lens on the cropped bodies. I have it on my A7 and its unbelievably sharp. Thanks again for all the videos, please keep up the good work!
@espencapable

Why not use the "Lock-on AF" feature (AF subject focus lock) when shooting sports? Then the A6000 will track the same subject over all its focusing points. Thats the right use of the technology. Not single point AF continuous shooting. That will just run wild..
@espencapable
@espencapable 8 лет назад
And when I am shooting moving objects like birds or cars, I always go for "Wide" or center zoned autofokus so that the camera can use all the focusing points and not just rely on the center dot. Because objects ALWAYS moves about in the frame..
@daveyimmy5474
@daveyimmy5474 8 лет назад
+Espen Solvik Kristiansen I agree. I use lock on AF all the time and select the subject and have actually done the swing test with my daughter and it had no problem at all keeping her in focus. Same with her soccer games in conjunction to face recognition i can follow her around the field without issue. I think Tony just didn't know all the available features or how to use the a6000 correctly because it's very powerful and feature-filled but a lot of the features are a little hidden.
@AndreiDinTheHouse
@AndreiDinTheHouse 8 лет назад
+Espen Solvik Kristiansen uhm, yeah, I also feel Tony has something against the a6000. Generally the evaluation is correct but it's really painful seeing him just use one AF feature when the a6000 offers so much more. It's not pushing the camera to show it's capability, it's single out one feature (yeah, the face detection is slow and not always accurate) and just ignoring the rest.
@espencapable

Today i was photgraphing some ski jumpers. Just chose a focus area and the camera tracked the jumper through the whole jump. 17/17 in focus.

Hey Tony, which one would you recommend between Sony A6000 and Nikon D5300 (both with kit lens 16-50/18-55 ) for all purpose photography and better IQ (day and night)? So to ask, which would be better in general use for someone who likes photography but is not a professional and when lens build up/variety is not a consideration?

Hi, Great review! Im going to purchase the a6000 camera but i have a few questions. does the fast tracking autofocus works only on faces? what about objects? which adapter you recommend for my 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG Sigma taking in consideration the fast focus is very important to me.

Hi just a quick question. In your opinion does the lens quality play a major part on the differences between the a6000 and the em10? Just out of curiosity if one were to take the best portrait lens on the a6000 and the same with the em10 (maybe with the 42.5mm nocticron), how would they fair to each other?

Hey Tony I am just investigating what would be the most appropriate camera for filming video for a blog and for RU-vid and and some documentaries re Permaculture etc. I am not in any way an experienced photographer and am a bit bamboozled by the choices. Seems that the Sony a600 might fit the bill. Any feedback would be appreciated. Is it right that you cant put on an external microphone ??

Hi Tony, thanks for your great videos, but.. you got me well confuesed now. I want to get into photography, but I'll be honest - it's not professional. I like the idea of having a compact, mirror-less camera like a6000 or e-m10, but is there a third option you'd recommend? Or maybe a DSLR in the same price range, but offering better quality (I liked the a6000 quality much better than the Olympus)? I was going to go for the e-m10, but you got me all confused now :) Thanks in advance!

I'm kind of new at photography but I really want to focus on street photography and landscapes for when I travel. Would the a6000 do well with what i need? I really don't need it to focus on anything moving that fast towards me. Would the sony one do well with weddings as well? I love the lightness of it.

Did you guys use the same settings ? I know everyone has their preferences on how to use mirrorless cameras, so did you each use your own same settings on each camera (i.e. P on Sony, and Manual on E-M) . I'm also curiuos as to what setting you had the a6000 on while at the park playground, that i kept hearing the 3 quick shots everytime you snapped a pic. THX

Great review and comparison of these two cameras. I'm upgrading from a EOS T6, and was torn between these two for the exact reasons Chelsea stated --- the a6000 is more functional, but the E-M10 seems more fun to use, and more aesthetically pleasing in my opinion. I'm going with the a6000 - what really sealed the deal was when Tony said "the M10 is the eight camera for the average person who doesn't watch RU-vid reviews of cameras". I consider myself an intermediate-level photographer, by no means an expert but definitely not a beginner either. Another plus for the a6000 is that there are much more E-mount lenses these days, so its definitely the one for me. Thanks again for going so in-depth with this video, you've gained a subscriber here.

So today, the wife said she wants her own mirrorless snapper after talking about how much she likes my a6K but wants something that's a small one lens solution. Suddenly I'm back to this review. It's such a fantastic review, and thank you for helping me make a choice- I'm quite keen to get her the omd em10, but the xt-10 and the g7 are also contenders. I know that any camera will be a good camera, but it's still so hard to choose lol.

Although it's a good comparison, I think you guys are a bit too harsh on these things (especially the EM10). I understand that you are both professional photographers and thus have relatively high standards, but that's not what the mirrorless market is aiming at. People that buy these are often people that travel a lot or do street photography (although that doesn't need to be the case of course). You make it almost seem like mirrorless cameras are for people that just want an advanced point and shoot but that's most certainly not the case. Most people that buy mirrorless know what they're doing and are not your grandparents, that description was almost an insult to all OMD users! And yes, I know mirrorless cameras don't take pictures as crisp or as detailed as a full-frame DSLR but those cameras are often 3 times as expensive so they shouldn't be compared to mirrorless cameras in my opinion.
@paristo
@paristo 10 лет назад
We can do large prints like 48x24" from two photos taken with a Nikon D800e and Olympus E-M1 and you will not see the difference when even pixel peeping prints in good light side by side or overlaid each other. You need really focus to specific area like and start pixel peeping to see something but you can't do that unless you really get close and know what you are searching. Difference is like 1% value. And that can be even made with ISO 3200 on both.
@nateo200
@nateo200 7 лет назад
Mirrorless cameras are being pushed into the future for professionals AND amateurs. I know your post is 2 years old but the Sony A7 series is evidence and now the Sony A9 is definitive proof that mirrorless does have a good place for pro's and can compete with the likes of the 5D (A7 series can match and exceed the 5D III and 5DS / 5DS R) as well as the 1D X (A9 looks like it will beat the 1D X and be on par with the 1D X II and 1D C)
@TDDPhoto
@TDDPhoto 7 лет назад
nateo200 True. Mirrorless camera's have evolved quite a bit in these two years. I wouldn't be surprised if dslr's will be obsolete in a couple years. Camera's like the Sony A9 are miles better than most high-end dslr's and it can only get better.
@nateo200
@nateo200 7 лет назад
Agreed. The main weaknesses of mirrorless cameras are remedied MUCH easier than the weaknesses of DSLR's (however few or many one argues there are some). For example, battery life is easily fixed. On my DSLR for example, I just didn't use live view a lot, now on mirrorless you are essentially using live view ALL the time but that doesn't mean you can do things like disable the live view on the LCD screen and only show the camera settings on it while using the EVF for live view only (my a6300 can do this and it really helps) or even disabling the LCD entirely and ONLY using the EVF which I find nice, reminds me of using a traditional 35mm Rangefinder! Battery technology has evolved SOOO much, and I say this as someone not just watching it evolve with phones and cameras but in things like RC applications, car batteries, etc. For every "weakness" a mirrorless camera has, I find a pretty easy way to remedy it, although I've always been patient with technology. A lot of people who criticize mirrorless probably think of the Nikon 1inch cameras, glorified point and shoots with only a handful of proprietary lenses, or older mirrorless options. I really think EVERY photographer should give a Sony A6300 or A7II for a spin with the latest Sony and Zeiss glass and maybe a few Nikon/Canon/Pentax/Leica lenses on adapters to see what these cameras can do. I really don't think anyone could be unimpressed with something like the Sony A7SII (or even the original A7S which is pretty much the same) and its ability to not only capture clean images or relatively clean images at insane ISO's but autofocus at -4 or -5 EV in a dark room! Or the Sony A7RII's ability to capture sharp images of stunning quality. Even my Sony A6300 produces sharp images down to the pixel and resolves more detail with my Canon lenses than my Canon DSLR!! It also takes photo's at ISO 10,000 that are not anymore noisier than recent cameras at ISO 6400 and that is being generous because I find I can hit ISO 20,000 and still be clean 90% of the time, hit ISO 25,600 in most situations it can be cleaned up, and hit ISO 32,000, 40,000+ in certain situations and come out pretty damn clean!

What mic were you using from the lab stuff from 16:00. It was choppy with uncomfortable silent spots that kick at your ear each time you speak? Reminds me of when you make a call with the iPhone 5 on speaker On another note: Watching the amount of car walk the 70D is dealing with in the backseat with minimal video effect around 4:00 says that's the STM lens and makes me even more glade I got the 70D for video to replace my xf105... As you said. There's no perfect camera, just the one to suit you... And this being my first DSLR, ITS BRILLIANT.(i do want the extras gained from the 5D3) I've been using you book... Thank you... MegaSimmo72 The quality of the a6000's video is definitely better (as is the image quality) but the touch screen on the E-M10 allows focusing while recording, and the focusing is much smoother. Also the E-M10 stabilizes any lens, so you can use a fast prime and handhold the video. Overall I prefer the E-M10 for video.

Hi Tony, just read lens reviews of sony e-mount lens, realize 50mm/1.8 sonly lens equivalent to apture 50/2.7 in full frame, 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS only equiv apture f/5.3-f/8.4. Does it mean the depth of field is worse than those canon or nikon aps-c cmos censor? I read articles, for eample 50mm f/1.8 II, there is only x1.6 1.5 convertor to full frame, the aperture does not seem to be compensate, is this true.

@2dL 9 лет назад
I think both the focal length and aperture change. So even the Nikon APSC would change it. Don't quote me on that, though. I just don't know WHY it wouldn't.

I like the idea of having the a6000 because it's super small, meaning I could (and most likely would) carry it with me wherever I go. I'm not really interested in doing sports or wildlife photography, so this one would be a pretty good option. Thanks for the review. Helped me out a lot!

My A6000 is coming on Jan 2nd with 2 kit lenses. I know people who have used it for weddings. It has a lot of pluses over other comparable models, but it does have its limitations. I think you just have to be aware it's not a replacement for your DSLR. I hope to use it to compliment my event pictures. Tony, do you have videos on RAW conversion with the A6000? I have LR now.

Hello Tony, thank you for producing great videos. What system would you recommend for extended backpacking travel if the budget wast an issue?
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 9 лет назад
Andrei Maxim Probably a small DSLR. Check our reviews of the D5500 (if that's in your budget) or the D3300. The mirrorless cameras are smaller, which is good, but the battery life is TERRIBLE. DSLR batteries can last a much longer time. BUT, if you're bringing a solar USB charger anyway, the a6000 (and all modern Sony cameras) can charge via USB, so that would be perfect.
@andreimaxim64
@andreimaxim64 9 лет назад
Tony Northrup Do you think Nikon d5500, Sony A7 (and Zeiss) or Fuji xt-1 color palettes are significantly better (subjectively:-)) than a6000 with Zeiss glass for shooting places and people. Solar charger is definitely going with me. Thank you for quick response. You rock!

Hi,Tony! I have a question...i don't know what to choose(nex 6 vs a6000) i know that a6000 is a new one but it has 24 megapix. vs 16 at nex 6. Some people say that 24mp is too much and some of lenses can't reveal all the quality because of 24 mp sensor and i should buy some special lenses. I don't know relly...For the present i have f3 with sigma 19-2.8,rokinon 85-1.4 and 50mm-1.8 from sony nex. Please i need your advice :)
@databeestje
@databeestje 9 лет назад
Veaceslav S. There is not a whole lot of difference in the image quality between the 2, a good lens will bring more to the table then the body. Also, since this video was made, several new lenses have been released, including a really good 35 F1.8. As for alternatives, there is the Samyang 12mm F2 which is manual but awesome and sharp wide open. I personally travel with the 18-105 F4 power zoom on my Nex-6, it is one of the most versatile travel lenses with really good image quality and I'm really happy with it. Unsuitable for action though with the F4 aperture, but with OSS it works really well for video. Something that I personally don't see mentioned often is that people want to film with the camera. For something that costs me 600, and another 500 euros for the lens, it'd better make good videos as well. Since my phone does it too, the expectation is there. Pictures alone don't cut it anymore, it's 2015.

I just bought the gorilla pod for my Canon 5D Mark iii - I thought it would be great for really low ground photography or beach scenes to give my photographs a wide angle lens look, and since I don't yet own a wide angle lens, it seemed to make sense. However, I don't know if I trust my camera on this tripod for wrapping around poles etc. What do you think of it? this little tripod?
@TonyAndChelsea
@TonyAndChelsea 10 лет назад
We have the big one and I don't find it nearly sturdy enough for the 5D Mark III. It's probably OK resting on the ground or a table, but I wouldn't put it anyplace it could fall.

Tony, Chelsea, Justin, thank you for making this video. I'm not in any plan to buy a new camera yet since I'm still happy with my current mirrorless equipment, but this video has been a tremendous help to compare how the performance between a Sony mirrorless APS-C and Micro Four Thirds cameras. By the way, does the E-M10 has the same focus snappiness as the E-M1?

bajigurwedangronde In practice, the E-M10 and E-M1 focus about the same. Technically, the E-M1 has phase detect autofocus, but none of the native lenses support that.

Hi Love the reviews you put out. I have a question about which camera to buy. I knows it’s such a generic question and so many variables play into that. I will give you some background and try to answer basic decision variables so you can advise me. Firstly I’m not a professional or amateur photographer. I belong to the lot who have been shooting pictures with point and shoot cameras but love a nice snap. Try out interesting angles and try to capture great architecture with my family in the frame on vacations. Love taking pictures during my travelling and also love taking pictures of my 19 month old daughter playing and doing random stuff…I love the DSLR results that people take and share with me, but I don’t know much about ISOs or aperture etc. plus I don’t like the bulky body in terms of carrying it around. I think I would like to learn more to make my photos better but I don’t see myself being a advanced photographer with multiple lenses. My budget is under $800 dollars. As I don’t want to spend too much but yet want DSLR type results (especially low light photo results). With the research I did I came up with the Nikon D5300 with 18-55mm VRII lenses, Nikon 1 AW1 (as its water & Shock proof and not bulky) and Fuji film XM 1 (cause not bulky and amazing pictures I think cause it has the best sensor??) or Sony Alpha A6000. Some say A6000 is the best entry level mirror less camera out there! Does it have a better sensor than Fuji M1? Are the pictures as good as the M1??? . other two that came highly recommended are Olympus OM-D E-M10 and Samsung Galaxy NX What would you recommend out of these? Based on my user profile please suggest best 2 out of these. Will highly appreciate your support for me to make this decision.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoy your RU-vid camera videos. Great information, concise and to the point, and very nicely captured with the camera. Might we tap your expertise. We would like to start a RU-vid channel for gardening that includes the Amazon Affiliate links that you are using. How do you create and qualify for this Amazon link? Do we also need a website or can we just have a RU-vid Channel? Is the Amazon Affiliate link something that we create when we create our RU-vid Channel?

For changing focus point, I found it convenient to pre set focus area to flexible spot. Then I only need to press central button in the wheel then I can use either dial and wheel or four buttons to change the focus point.

Tony, thank you for your fast reply. Video is not as important for me as image quality. So, I am forced to look for a compromise.

Well, given the far greater success rate of focused images from the a6000 seen in other RU-vid videos and online reviews, I have to wonder if your test settings were consistent with theirs? If there is an option for turning the continuous focus on and off, as well as focus points being used then the a6000 may have fared better or worse, depending upon these factors...

Informative video, thanks! So you compared the A6000 plus prime-lens with the EM-10 with a kit-lens mounted? I think, this is a kind of irregular comparison because the lens has a huge influence on sharpness, color, CA, distortion and other optical parameters. So it´s no wonder that you judge the Sony as sharper with a sharper lens on it. Finally I would not consider the EM-10 as a entrylevel camera for mum, dad or opa :-) It´s the way, someone takes pictures that makes the difference, right? Keep it up, Chelsea and Tony, it´s always a pleasure to watch your videos. Best regards from Germany :-)
