In this beginner oriented Sony A7 III geni.us/uM65AJp or geni.us/DAvFFe6 tutorial style video I will explain Aperture, Shutter Speed, Manual Mode, and Bulb Mode. I will also incorporate the exposure triangle which puts everything together for those new to photography and the Sony camera system in general.. Edit: @ 12:50 I meant to say speed up the shutter, NOT slow down the shutter speed. Sorry about that guys ;)

thank you for making this video. May I make a suggestion? Please please break this down further. I struggle following this video and I took a university level photography class and passed with an A. Please go over the camera parts and show what lens you're using. Don't drown us with tons of numbers and tech stuff. I tried following your apiture section to be able to change mine and I just couldn't get it to work. My Lenz is a 3.5-5.6/ 28-70. I wanted to take pics of Northern lights, so I needed an apiture of 2.8. But nothing I did changed the F from 4.5 to anything. It would help if the numbers you say would show up on the screen, not everyone is an audible learner. Also be careful with how much new vocabulary you throughout. Such as "noise", it took me a second or two to remember that it isn't audible but rather visual brightness and over exposure related.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 4 месяца назад
The lens you has is a variable aperture, Meaning it goes from f/3.5-f/5.6. So at 28mm the max aperture is f/3.5. At 70mm the max aperture is f/5.6. Your lens does not have f/2.8 and due to it being variable means it will vary as you zoom. I have and A7 III beginners guide also I would recommend watching here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5L8j4FkxDTw.html That is much slower tutorial and should help you grasp the camera itself much better. This video is a more advanced part 2 sort of thing I would say. All the best, Jay

When I'm in Auto instead of A the picture is much more colorful and a little brighter. ISO is on auto. Shouldn't the image lighting and colors be the same? The auto Aperture is and the A mode are both on 4. This is a Sony a7sIII btw with a 24-105 lens.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 месяца назад
Yeah they should be about the same, but full auto may have DRO turned ON which is dynamic range optimizer and that will brighten the images a bit in full auto mode...

I'm a pretty experienced photographer, although I'm much more experienced with videography. Last night, on assignment with the A7 III for the first time, I had shutter priority mode engaged with ISO set to Auto. My meter was always showing 0.0, yet I was still getting some blown-out highlights and zebra stripes (I turned zebra stripes on in the menu b/c it helps me as an additional tool for exposure - set to 100, or peak). This was around 6:30 PM during the summer, when there's still plenty of daylight out. Can you explain the possible cause(s) of the overexposure? I even tried full auto mode as a failsafe, but it didn't help. I don't have a variable ND filter, yet, but one's on order by my boss. All this said, this video was spot-on helpful and what I needed, to understand why the meter doesn't necessarily show the full bar with the pointer, and just shows the number, either solid or flashing. I was confused last night because I have an old DSLR (Sony A300, in fact) that does show the bar style meter that I'm used to. I guess Sony wanted to save some screen real estate, but I wasn't sure how to read correct exposure.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann Год назад
The meter only works as a meter in Manual mode. Otherwise it is acting as an exposure comp slider. So you could have lowered your exposure compensation to slightly under expose the image which is what I would have recommend you do in this situation. Also, if you hit the display button on the top of the rear control wheel you can cycle thru the display modes and enable the histogram view which will give you a visual indication of the the exposure with highlights being on the right, shadows on the left... You can see when the highlights are clipping pretty easy with the histogram. In these scenes you must under expose or expose for the highlights, use a fill flash, or you could take HDR photography for multiple exposures if your subjects are not moving and are not human... Another awesome tool this camera offers is the Highlight Metering mode option which you can try by goin here: MENU → (Camera Settings1) → [Metering Mode] → Highlight. This will tell the camera to expose for the highlights and will automatically under expose your image to preserve the highlight detail which is great for some situations. Honestly though I think you just need to set the exposure comp to like -.7 or -1 and you will be fine. I hope that helps, Jay

You have reached the max flash sync speed. You would need a high speed sync compatible flash unit in order to use a faster shutter speed than the normal max sync speed.

Great vid. Got a quick question. At around 9:12. You had a very long shutter speed. The screen is showing everything blown out, which is obviously over exposed. But you meter was showing 0.0, which would indicate perfect exposure. Should that meter not be reading a higher value. I've noticed this with my Sony.

That is the max shutter speed for flash sync with this camera unless you use a flash capable of high speed sync. In that case 1/4000sec would be the maximum.

Hmm, that usually means the camera is not seeing the lens. The lens is mounted properly? Have you tried taking the battery out and resetting the camera back to factory?

You've continually mentioned "faster" or "fast" when describing the aperture setting - is this just a whoops and you're thinking about shutter speed or is speed an aspect of the size of the Aperture?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 года назад
Hi James, yes the "faster Aperture" is referring to a larger aperture which ultimately allows for a faster shutter speed... Often times large aperture lenses are referred to as "Fast Glass"

Please can I still zoom an object myself while my camera is on autofocus mode? Or the camera will zomm the object itself??
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 9 месяцев назад
You zoom the lens manually or move the camera closer to zoom and Auto focus will work as long as you are not to close to the subject...

What is the meaning of symbol of palm adjacent to camera below RAW in the screen? Sometimes I see it blinking! Please help
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 5 лет назад
Hello, it means SteadyShot off/on, and Camera shake warning. Basically the camera is telling you the image might be blurry if it's blinking, because the shutter speed is too slow to be hand held. Use a tripod or increase the shutter speed to stop the blinking hand/ warning.

Great sharp explanation. Can you tell me from your experience what is the optimal settings for focus sharpness on portrait og landscapes photography on Sony A7r lll.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 года назад
For maximum sharpness you need to make sure your shutter speed is fast enough which would be #1. Next you will need to decide what kind of depth of field you are after. Portraits often befit from a the background being out of focus, so in those cases a faster aperture would be "better". However, every lens has a sweat spot and it really depends.I love shooting at f/1.8 and 85mm or so for maximum background blur. For landscapes usually you want the frame sharp from front to back which will require f/8 or f/11 depending on where you focus and distance to the subject. I also tend to use a wide angle lens for Landscapes...
