The Sony a7c was my entry into the Sony ecosystem. Especially having access to a wide range of affordable third party lenses. The cost of Canon glass when I had the Canon RP was too prohibitive and adapting the EF glass made it too clunky to use on the daily. My a7c now comes with me everywhere, and because of that, I'm shooting much more often, which is the point of having the camera in the first place.

Loving this refreshing perspective on the Sony a7c. I think people often overlook design when reviewing cameras. Thanks for taking this into consideration. The Sony a7c is one of my favorite cameras. Looking forward to this design language for future Sony releases.

More than a review (which it is, and very balanced!), I appreciated this video as an analysis of corporate design, production and marketing. It's very good! And I liked your call at the end for everyone to get out and Gladwell with our cameras. Even if can't venture out very far (because of a stay-at-home order), you've inspired me to get outside with camera in hand!

Thank you, Hugh. The A7C def triggers an aesthetic-processing part of my brain similar to that for Apple products. You are one of the few who has recognized that perhaps Sony is consciously designing towards capable minimalism. Specubating is an inspired word choice for this editorial!

Awesome video and I have grown to really like my A7C, I got it to purely make videos on a tripod for youtube and as a starter camera to potentially get an A7 IV but I've truly enjoyed it and taken it around with smaller lenses for pictures now as well. Great video and good to see someone actually talking well about the A7C lol

I love my a6400! I take it everywhere because it's so light. Even with a relatively heavy prime, my hand doesn't get fatigued shooting; and with the button layout, I can shoot and operate it almost always one-handed.

I take my A7RII and a bag of primes with me when I'm going out specifically to photograph... but the rest of the time, which is most of the time, I've got the A7C and my Samyang 35mm 2.8. It's so easy to carry and the results are great. Once my 40mm 2.5 gets here with it's aperture ring, AF switch, and eye AF button this camera is going to be even more of a joy to carry. I'm with you, it's more than enough for me 99% of the time.

You know, there's something about New Yorkers that drive me crazy but endear me to them at the same time. This is a well thought out piece, and I hope people understand that practice is time so well spent. I look at the old photos that people put down because they don't have the contrast or oversharpening we see in current photos and marvel at the craft and artistry of the photographer. Those pictures speak louder and better (to me) than many an Instagram post. You're right. This is an underrated camera. And frankly, so is the A6600. Well done!

Love your calm and honest thoughts on the A7c. And - shockingly right ;-) - it's more about the craft than about the gear. I am shooting on a A6000 for some years now (with adapted Leica R lenses - which are simply beautiful!) ... and I am here on the edge to upgrade my A6000 to make the full use of my fullframe lenses. But it's not a hurry.

I went for a hike this weekend with my A7c and the new 24mm and 40mm lenses and really enjoyed it. It wasn't just that the combination was light, but also the new lenses have an on-lens aperture dial, which makes the UI much more effective - I didn't miss the front dial. That combination of minimal body and on-lens aperture dial seems to be part of Sony's new industrial design. I used to travel on business (remember that?) with it was easy to take along an APSC NEX6 (then A6000, A6300, A6500) and the 16mm/35mm lenses. This felt similarly portable but, thanks to the aperture dial, better UI and full frame etc.

Going on a hike, I take a 7C and a Tamron 17-28 f2. 8 And 24 mm and 40 mm sony are unnecessary. The difference in weight is 85 g. and the length is 5 cm. But ! This lens is much cheaper than two Sony lenses, more versatile in focal length and it does not need to be changed to another one. In 35 mm mode, it gives a focal length of 42 mm. Thereby replacing the lens with 40 mm. So you can think about whether it is worth paying very much for 85 g. and 5 cm.) And changing lenses back and forth is not the most convenient activity in nature, and even dust gets on the matrix. Good shots! )

Have watched you on/off for about 2 years. You are the sage of the camera YT world, and the large subscriber YT camera folks should heed your words. They don't, and won't. Too busy 'specubating'. For those of us who grew up on film, shot full manual b/c that was the only thing, and worked our way up to today, we know that we can get good results without having the absolute top end in specs or device automation. I came to this video 2 years late, b/c I am trading in another system to focus on Sony. I like small gear, and a year using a RX100m7 and a ZV1m1 on the side of my other gear has lured me in. A7c may be the thing that I shoot next. Thanks, and I'm pretty sure you earned a new patron on Patreon today.

Thank you, Hugh, for yet another engaging and articulate review. The A7C is on my 'must have' list. I am one of those who use little of the endless plethora of features and functions on any of our cameras. I want to use my digital cameras in much the same way as I used - and still (occasionally) use my trusty Olympus 35mm OM10. After all that little beauty served me well for more than three decades before I bought my first digital camera at Christmas 2012. My simple delight is in looking through the viewfinder (especially the optical version on my X100V) and seeing the entire world laid out before me for me to capture as I choose. Freezing each millisecond of time never ceases to astound me. I look forward to achieving this with the A7C...one day...

Hey Thomas, how have you found speed in shooting with a7c? I am looking for a second body as I have a7iii as my main camera to shoot events and some weddings. Great perspective! I had and loved an A7iii for years. The form factor prevented me from bringing it out much for everyday capture opportunities. After trading it in and getting an A7c with a few different lenses I am creating all the time. I can take it with a small lens (kit lens or my new favorite the 20mm 1.8) everywhere. Each time I shoot I am improving my compositions and love the ability to be light and in the moment. I appreciate your perspective and insight on the benefits of this camera.

@@3BMEP many months later and I still love it. My only complaint right now is balancing it with my Ronic SC gimbal. As it is so light, my favourite lenses don't balance properly. I am able to balance the kit lens and might have to bite the bullet and get the compact prime 24 (or a different gimbal). The camera itself has never let me down and I love using it still.

I took the dive and sold all my aps-c gear including my a6600 for a new a7C. Could not be happier. This camera is amazing. I pair it with 35mm f2.8 Zeiss, the 55mm f1.8 Zeiss or the new 35mm GM. All have fantastic results. This camera is much easier to use with these primes in REAL LIFE on the street or at a celebration. While I also have a Sony A7r3 to use for higher resolution, I find myself grabbing this camera first. I shoot jpeg in creative BW and Raw in the background fir color originals. It handles it all with amazing focusing speed. Happy owner here. Thank You Hugh for NAILING my internal dialogue and debate. Count me IN.

As one who mainly adapts vintage lenses on the a7iii and A7R2, mounting say the Konica Hexanon 40/1.8 for street photography could be an interesting proposition. I’ve already gotten used to the wimpy EVF of the A7R2 for manual focus lenses, so this sounds like it wouldn’t be any worse. It’s a kit I might consider at some point. Thanks for the follow up commentary. And yes, specs no more ;)

I love the discussion on design and simplicity. It is exactly why I love the RX1 series so much. I own a RX1R2 currently, but my favorite really was the original RX1. I didn't need that much resolution, and probably didn't even need that EVF. Just a nice sensor in a body built around a fantastic lens, with intuitive manual controls. For me it's sad to see the RX1 series seemingly discontinued, but I think the A7C is Sony's answer to a modern RX1. I'll be getting one soon for the nice build and battery. I'd love to see a new RX1 with a newer design language and simplified, modernized UI though :3

I have recently become the owner of a Sony A7c. The reason - I traded in over 30 years worth of gear to downsize and I used part of the funds to buy this camera. I bought it because it reminded me so much of a Leica M. I love the size and its operation. There is a real attraction to these smaller cameras. They are great for street shooting. As noted in the review, less in this case is indeed more.

My most fun camera to use due to its sheer pleasure of quick manual focus (the EVF is so nice that I don't need to magnify the view), don't have to be concerned about the sensor is too much for the "subpar" glass I love to use, easy post processing (when needed), quick AF with real time tracking, the flippy screen, and yeah if I need to take a small video clip it is very well equipped for it - is the A7Siii. Meanwhile I can't help but wonder what the A7C using the Samyang 45 f1.8 would be like. My copy of that lens has some special sauce in it - love the rendering.

With my 55mm f1.8 its a brilliant street setup, even after very cropping I can still get 2K resolution stills which is overkill for social media but oh so sweet for printing. 61mp turns primes into “after the fact zooms” Once again Hugh a great perspective 👌👍🏾

My photography journey started with RX1 and after so many years of indulgence, I still find it very hard to replace that camera in my bag. Having used a7c for a while, even if some of the modern glasses are statistically superior, I still look back to the mythical rendering of that old Zeiss. Sony actually started the mirrorless trend in the exact right direction - extremely compact, superior lens, amazing sensor. Over the years they have to develop those less-extreme products to keep it profitable. But I’ll always miss the days when Sony deliver such a revolutionary product that is “at least five years ahead” of their competitors.

As someone who started cutting his photographic teeth on all-manual Canon AT-1 35mm SLR in the late summer of 1979, I too believe less is more. For the vast majority of pictures, I shoot using aperture-priority, so I do not need program-this and program-that buttons. Simplicity and ease of use always win over complexity. What I like in a camera is an effective focus-peaking system, excellent AF, excellent stabilization, plus sharp glass, and ease of use. Nothing else really matters much.

This camera would be perfect for me if it had atleast a 40mp sensor. A great compact size, lightweight, long battery life, looks fantastic but is 24mp acceptable for professional/enthusiast usage, A1 / A0size prints? Or should I just get the A7R iv? Which is quite bulky..

I have a GH5 and a Canon M6 Mark II that I use for video. Looking to add this camera to my collection because of the famous Sony autofocus and low light performance. I like the smaller form factors because they fit my Ronin-SC, one of the smaller gimbals for mirrorless. When using it for travel and spontaneity, you don't want to deal with too much complexity, otherwise it ruins the mood/moment. I'd rather focus on camera movements, narrative, etc. Simplicity is why some pro camera operators like the Black Magic 6K. You're correct in saying log, raw, etc. is too a big hassle for a one-person operation intended for social media. If you're making a movie, not likely you'll use anything under 20k, unless it's pre-prod proof of concept.

@nodavood
@nodavood 3 года назад
Good points. Canon is pushing RP and a newer version coming out for ~$800 for the same reasons. They are ditching APS-C as well. Not worth the extra investment for R&D and the glass lineup. M system was their top seller, and they have given up on that from the looks of it.

I am LOVING my a7c :) especially with the Sony 20mm f1.8 lens for on the go vlogging! I use the Catalyst app a lot but think I want to invest in a gimbal soon, which one would you suggest?

Question on video ... you said, I think, that it lacked real time tracking for video. Unless I’m mistaken what you mean, it does. It certainly tracks my eye in video. Am I missing something? Thanks!
@karafuru7666
@karafuru7666 3 года назад
real time tracking can be used to track any and all things including dinosaurs, spongbob, rocks, cars, etc. Face/eye is a subset of real time tracking. Not all Sony camera's have real time tracking for stills and even less have real time tracking for video.

The initial unfair reviews were great for my budget as I bought the A7C brand new for $350 cheaper than the A7III. It's a great little camera for everyday shooting which is what I wanted it for. It's perhaps the Sony camera that I'm enjoying the most (I had A6000, A7, A7RII and A7III /sold them all) and sure its color science is better than previous models. First time I like Sony jpgs (never used them before) but now it's a whole different story. Now I shoot raw and and jpgs and many a time I just keep the jpg files (unthinkable with previous models).

I laugh when I read comments from people who have never owned a camera debating whether they should get the A7riv or the A7 iv or just save up for the A1. It turned out that the A7C was my 'upgrade' from my A7iii and I came to that decision after the A7iv was released and could compare. I am delighted with the ease of use that comes with the smaller form factor and have quickly found workarounds for its shortcomings ( except maybe that EVF -usable but could be so much better!) I just enjoy picking it up and taking it with me and carrying it in a much smaller bag to boot; not something to be overlooked. I have rediscovered the simple joy of my smaller primes on it but also have been thrilled to discover that heavier glass somehow also feels fine. My 70-200 f.4 is at home on it and looks and handles "right." Take my order right now for the next iteration if Sony does listen and addresses the first gen shortcomings like that EVF and maybe throws in a double card slot and one more custom button and perhaps give us a few more megapixels for cropping. I don't find that I miss the front dial all that much.....

I believe your first point about it not having the same autofocus as a7siii is wrong. I own both and they both have real time touch tracking. However this feature only works with proxies off and you need to set function to touch to track on the menu. Cheers!

I enjoy your channel. A few months ago I picked up an A7C. It strikes a nice balance between the Z7II and Z50 I had been using prior to switching. A joystick and front dial would be really nice. The menu button is in a very odd location. Fewer buttons, but still more customizable than a Nikon Z body. Subject tracking is fantastic. I don't mind the EVF compared to the other compacts that don't even have one. I had tried the A7RII, A7RIII, and A7IV as well. Nikon still has the nicest JPG's of all the brands, IMO. The A7C is especially nice with the Tamron 20-40 and 70-180 f2.8 zooms. This kit's price, weight, size, and performance is still ideal. It could use a firmware update. ;) I'm looking forward to the A7CII, and hopefully with a few more mp's. Cheers!

I don’t regret my purchase. Everyone calls it a baby a7iii but I call it the baby a7siii. It’s been amazing for me and I really don’t see myself upgrading unless I feel like I need 4k 60 for some reason. The FX3 is very tempting but I can wait.

The A6400 and A6600 also have unlimited recording by the way, I have a 6400 and have recorded for more than an hour. However it’s overheated in 10 minutes in my office before when I didn’t realize my computer was blowing it’s exhaust air directly at it lol Anyways it also has a flip up screen, which does block the microphone, but $20 for a small rig relocator fixed that for me.

Amen to this video. Once I start to feel like my Sony a6400 is actually holding me back, I think this would be the next reasonable step for me. I look forward to not thinking about what my lenses actually are but not really, or are equivalent to, and just having them be what they literally are. And a little bit of help with stabilization would be nice. Thanks for sharing such a reasonable video.

That's why my Canon 70d and 17-55mm f2.8 is on ebay now. Although my Google Pixel 3a phone takes surprisingly good photos - by the time I get it out of my pocket and turned it on, I've missed that special moment :(. I'm hoping the A7C won't dig into my neck like the heavy Canon, and will have the speed and accuracy to capture those special moments.

Interesting, unique and well-articulated view. Thank you, it is appreciated. I have been using most often an a6400 with the sony 20 1.8., with the 85 1.8 my second lens. I had hoped to buy the a7c and have the full frame sensor and the crop mode give me more out of my kit. But the evf puts it out of the running for me. What I want is a small camera , well built, where I can spend my time playing with light and composition outside and not with colour in post. I was heading toward a Q2 but you always seem to plug the CL instead, even when you are just recommending the 35 lens. Any chance you could do a quick reply why ?

Love your videos as always, very interesting and very enjoyable. Am doubting that the A7Cmk2 or A9C will have a 50% of the awesomeness of the A9ii and 50% of the A74mk4 greatness. And maybe Sony would implement a battery grip with a built-in High Speed memory (SSD Card slot), extra processing chip, a movie/picture editor software and a wireless flash/lamp controller in it. Stay safe everyone.

Have bought the A7C, having earlier had Sony NEX series and Sony A series camera. So I do like the A7C and will buy some prime lenses. Will also keep the kit zoon, as its super compact for everyday use. I never had a fullframe before, but I am amazed about the low light performance even with the bundeled lens :P But with NEX I had f1.8 lenses, so I will do f1.8 or lower prime for 85mm at least, maybe also f1.4 for 50mm. I do think however maybe a good zoom + 85mm f1.4 would be the best for me in the start

Hey there, i used to watch your videos a few years ago and have noticed you have changed from doing long narrated cuts to breaking it up with black screens now. Any reason for the change in styles? I really did find your long narratives to be easy on the ears and eyes. It almost feels like there are lots of jump cuts thrown in, in comparison to your older style.

As a new model, the A7C is only on its first version. The few negatives are enough for me to not buy this first A7C, but I like the basic philosophy so much that I assume the A7C MK II or III will reduce those flaws enough to become my next main camera, especially for travel. Like the first M1 Macs, the first version of the A7C indicates that future versions have significant upside potential.

I can't get over the price disparity between this and the Lumix GX85 or GX9. For basically a mic jack... the other spec differences don't really show in the end-product, imo. And the lack of a mic jack is mitigated by such products as Instamic.

The sensor on this thing is pretty amazingly good. Good resolution for pretty much anything I’d want to print, and the dynamic range to duke it out with Medium Format beasts like the GFX 50S. It blows me away every time I compare the images to the absolutely diminutive body they came out of.
