I have an R6 and love it. But man, the RF lens prices and choices are limited. I've had a wild hair to switch before just to have more lens options at better prices.

Honestly I never really understood this argument. I can see if there was some performance disadvantage while using the adapter but there isn't. EF lenses work perfectly if not better on the RF system. This is also true when you adapt third party lenses

Just use the adapter. L EF lenses are just as good if not better than third party alternatives. Sigma and Tamron could never top the EF L versions in image quality.

I just traded my Sony for canon R6. I got the A7 iv as an upgrade from my A7iii and I’m not sure if I’m the only one but my A7iii was easier to use and shot better. I’m tired of trying to make my Sony footage look like Canon. Just get the canon. Also those Sigma Art lens are cheaper and look amazing I just got the 24mm 1.4 Sigma Art with the canon adopter and it’s amazing.

Hi Alex, thanks for this in-depth comparison of both cameras from a technical perspective and your view as a portrait photographer! I think you also were very fair to compare different focal lengths, of similar price category. I was also looking into both systems at the end of 2021 as I was really frustrated after investing a lot of money into Canon´s R-System (and the original R). The R just missed so many features that I need for landscape and action and I always felt dragged down by it. Worst of all, the aftermarket value of the "R" really went down the drain after the R5/6 were released. The system as a whole to this day didn´t really develop to the point of what I had hoped for back in 2018. Not only is Canon missing 3rd party native-lenses but they also almost completely ditched the "semi-pro" lens market for RF. (e.g. f1.4 L lenses) You can choose to go full pro or are stuck with low end offerings. There simply is nothing to buy in between those sections. I think Sony has an advantage with their native lenses here, as there are really nice mid-range options. What kinda tops it off on the Canon side are the *insane* prices. For example, there is just no justification for the fact that you can get the EF 16-35mm f4 L IS + EF 70-200mm f4 L IS II for the price of either the RF 14-35 or 70-200 f4. Actually, the EF set might even end up cheaper than one of the RF lenses. The difference in quality between the modern EF and RF glass simply isnt that big. Anyway, as the A7 IV was around 500-600€ more than the R6 here (and because I´d have had to sell all my Canon gear), I decided to give Canon one last chance and switched my R for the R6. From the first second on I was stunned by how much more sophisticated the R6 is compared to the R. The R6 has basically everything you could wish for on a semi-pro body. If you can live with the additional size / weight of the EF to RF adapter, the EF lens market is gigantic and pretty inexpensive at the moment. This also partly fixes the problem with Sigma / Tamron not being around in the RF game, if you want to use 3rd party glass you can also use the EF offerings. Thanks again for the video!

This is a great point! And I should mention that EF glasses perform even better on the R system. It really breathes new life into them.

@Freacer1
@Freacer1 2 года назад
@@briannicholson2971 Hi Brian, to be honest, there were a some specific things that bothered me with the R. I´ve used the camera for about 2 years and it all depends on what you photograph. In general, I´d sum it up with - You just have to adjust to / buy too many things to make the R work. At least that was the case for me personally. I think there were 3 big things that annoyed me in my workflow with the R: 1. Missing Joystick - Touch & Drag AF is mostly fine, but once you really start working around with the camera, quickly changing focus areas, it becomes bothersome. Also think about the fact: What if you decide to flip out the screen to take a photo from a different angle? Most likely you´ll loose focus control with your thumb in that case. Worst case is in the winter time, if you ever decide to take the camera out lets say... below -5°C. You are basically left with using the D-Pad to select your focus area, which takes ages. Of course you can use touch-capable gloves, but most of them aren´t thick enough for colder weather. 2. Framerate and viewfinder lag - Framerate isnt great when you use Tracking AF. I do a good bit of aircraft photography in my free time and do tend to spend a day or two next to an airfield if I can take some time off. The R is quite simply awful for that case as the viewfinder is always "lagging" and you cant adjust to whats really going on in your frame. For example - when I used the R for aircraft, I had pull with the aircraft and *guess* where it will be in the frame. No matter how good you can get at this "guessing game", it can work, but it´s far more comfortable if you have a higher frame rate and can actually see whats happening through the viewfinder in real time. 3. Missing Interval timer / focus stacking - For some unknown reason Canon decided to put those features in the RP but not the R. The internal interval timer is a great feature if you like to do manual time lapses. - You don´t have to carry around a remote. Of course the R has the option to make time lapses, but these are directly processed into a 1080/4K movie and you cant access the single frames. I wont go into this further but it can be a big issue to not have the RAW frames from a time lapse in some cases. Apart from that though, I personally never found the single card slot or touchbar to be a big issue. You can bind the touchbar to the "Lock" button on top and keep if locked if you dont need it, it works quite well like this. Usually used the touchbar for ISO adjustment and then pressed "Lock" once I had my ISO set. It´s a bit of a weird camera and I´d only recommend it if you do a lot of portrait photos and general street/landscape (disregarding the time lapse issue). The 30MP resolution is great. It´s not suited for faster action at all. Best Regards

i have 2 eos R, and i think this time (2022), i can get cheap EF L glass than ever before, and Alex said is true, if u choose sony or canon or even other brand, all camera is great, depend how good u know your own gear. i'm in canon for a long time and im in deep knowledge what my gear capable of. and i heard that canon RF mount, is closed for third party lenses, for me i dont care ... coz i just need 3-4 lense top, if i need other lenses, i just rent it ... maintanance free. so this video just confirm, now is like no point compare one brand to another coz all already good. Just picked that already suit you, suit your money, suit your workflow ... coz alot money to go to, not just for camera body, like a new laptop, upgrade PC, extra hardrive, lighting, audio, and a vacation maybe ? 😁

Had the R6, sold it for the a7IV when it came out, no regrets. I have mostly shot Canon over my 17 years of doing this professionally, but I got tired of waiting for lenses. Its going on 4 years now, there will be no Sigma and Tamron lenses, only overpriced RF glass, no thanks. I was able to get 3 great Samyang primes on the E mount for less than one of Canon's RF primes (35 and 50 1.8 excluded) Im also shooting more video these days and the a7IV is better for video. The R6 is just too expensive for what it is. Should be around $2k.

The main reason why I moved to Sony is because of the amount of affordable glass, Sigma art is killing the game. I can’t say I left cannon for anything else other than the price tag for RF glass, I still think Canons Vidoe AF is far better than Sony and the R6 is just a faster shooting photography camera which I really miss having but I love my A7iv ❤

@@michaelbell75RF lens are expensive yes, you are right! But the quality of RF lenses is much better than Sigma and Tamron at same focal length. That Sony ecosystem is one really solid reason to buy a Sony body. A7IV is such an good overall hybrid camera. Man this video was great! I've shot Canon for 15 years and feel they have the best menus, and best ergonomics. One thing that has disheartened me is the price of Canon lenses over the past 7 years or so, though, all lenses have really skyrocketed with inflation. A high end prime now costs more than a high end zoom used to. But the big advantage Canon has over Sony is that with the EF-R adapter, you have a HUGE selection of lenses available, even larger than Sony with no loss in performance (You can't say that for Sony where adapted lenses are very hit and miss at best). In fact, my EOS-R using adapted lenses worked way better than my 5D4 using native EF lenses. Adapted EF lenses generally work just as well as RF glass. On the Sony side one thing that kept me away are the mediocre ergonomics, the terrible clunky menus (still not great... sometimes too much customization and settings is an unnecessary drawback), and man, those outdated terribly crippled Sony screens. Sony is one of the biggest manufacturers of LED screens yet they have by far the worst LEDs in the camera industry. So many people try to dismiss the importance of the LED screen but that's where many people do most of their interactions with the camera on a day to day basis.

First of all what a great service you did for me. I’m up on the fence for these two cameras and Bayou providing these raw files now I know which one I want no question hands-down Canon is the better camera. The colors are ten times better. Period lol. There is always a green hue on the skin with the Sony. If you do a basic edit just white balance highlights and shadows exposure then use the same settings on the same photo you will see it. With the Sony you have to go play with the colors the canon is quicker editing and way nicer. Also if you want to see it. Alex, Your take on these cameras is super helpful. You provide all sorts of important insights that other reviewers haven't called out. I thought I'd made the switch to Nikon, with a purchase of a Z6ii. But after several months of use, while image quality was really great, i found its focusing options not so fast to avail of. So I'm back to comparing the A7iv and the R6. I have a # of quality Canon lenses and Canon's ef-rf connector working so flawlessly is a big draw, along with the better IBIS you and others describe. One other difference between them though some may want to keep in mind (I just stumbled on this) - The R6 DOES take a series of focus stacked images; and it also has a setting allowing for multiple exposures in camera. I use both those. I'm sort of surprised that the current Sony A7iv doesn't. Thanks much!

"very good affordable third party lenses" But isn't that the point for EF? The major benefit is that you can use any EF mount lens so you actually have the widest possible selection. I personally wouldn't want to miss the high end lenses, the connectivity, quality screen (as mentioned in the review, more important than many might think for actual daily use). I wonder why you switched when you especially already had RF lenses. Better to stay there, use the RF lenses and if price matters, get some Sigmas etc for it :)

Had the R6 with RF24-70 and returned it for Sony A7IV and Sigma 24-70. I don't miss the stabilization in the lens and I also saved >1300$ on the Sony Pairing compared to the Canon. The combined stabilization in video sucked on the Canon. Very distracting distortion on edges. I haven't noticed any issue photographically using just in body stabilization over the combined stabilization I had on Canon. It's also important to note that the Sigma lens is a native lens for the Sony mount and is more up to date than Sigma and Canon EF mount lenses. There wasn't anything worth noting as far as focus speed and image quality between these two configurations. Just my thoughts on the matter but switching to the Sony A7IV over the R6 hasn't been a decision I regret.

@@Seitenwerk the issue is with the adapter route which everyone seems to be ignoring is - the EF glass won't be made for a long while. It's a dead end, and those lenses will not get their successors, they won't get updated. People who think that Canon's third party lens support over the adapter is comparable to Sony's support are ignoring a simple fact that all of those lens makers are 1) making new lens models which will NEVER release on EF and 2) are actually redesigning and updating all lenses for mirrorless. Sigma reworked their entire line-up for Sony's E-mount, and those lenses are better and oftentimes smaller than their old HSM counterparts. They also released lenses that will never see the light of day on the EF mount (or any DSLR mount) like their smaller, premium build quality f2 lineup. The EF-RF adapter is a very convenient and viable and hassle free solution for anyone already heavily invested into EF, as it will make the transition much easier in the long term. But that's all it is, a tool for transitioning to mirrorless.

Why didn’t he compare the video? because the canon only can record 30 minutes of 4K video. And that’s in the canon spec sheet.

Question: What profile did you use for the Canon files? Seeing as you use Lightroom (which I use too) it does a bad job of recreating the Canon colors. I am happy they at least added native profiles a while ago but while those come closer to the canon colors, its still not perfect. (plus you have to choose between the available ones until finding the correct one)
@Mikri90

Forcing oneself into that look just to have "Canon colors" is, for lack of a better word, a bit dumb in the sense that it's incredibly restrictive. That only creates images that look like millions of other images and have no personal stamp on them. I mean I get it for JPEG shooting and anyone requiring really fast turnaround but for anyone interested in editing their work to find their own look, those camera matching profiles will only be a stumbling block.

Just keep going with Canon R series, the only advantage of Sony is lens ecosystem from third party companies while Canon had their EF lens which still works very well through Adapter. What if Canon share the profile to third party companies in the future? Sony’s advantage will be gone. Fairly, the RF’s price is so close to GM’s. Ex: the RF 24-70 is more a hundred bucks than Sony FE 24-70 GM 2, while RF has Image Stabilization which is more valuable than $100
@JsGarage
@JsGarage 2 года назад
The GM 2 is also a much lighter and smaller lens. I didn't see the benefit of IS in the lens when I had the RF24-70. Body stabilization is more than enough outside of a very specific use. The combined stabilization on Canon was terrible in video as well. Lens "IS" is more important for a 70-200 and Sony has it there. Just depends on what you want really. One system isn't the clear choice for everyone.

@Seitenwerk
@Seitenwerk 2 года назад
Then get the R6 I would say. Better screens, ergonomics, autofocus, connectivity, you can use all your existing EF lenses. Plus one day you might want to get a premium lens and then you will definitely be happy that you are able to choose between the RF lenses. Sony just doesn't have similar ones. Canon really delivered with every lens thy brought out for the system and usually topped the expectations by adding something more (liken bringing out the 24-70 f2.8 but adding IS to it, which people wished for years). Then they also brought out exotic version like the 28-70 f2, which is currently my go to lens for weddings and portraits. There is nothing comparable available on the market. And those lenses are so good, this zoom lens delivers prime quality when shooting wide open at f2 across the range. So I can exclusively use it for basically everything. Or the 70-200, which was a third lighter than others on the market, plus half the size. Considering that 70-200 usually required the whole backpack space, that's a game changer when thinking about taking that with you. I dont know why Sony still adds such crappy screens to their cameras (especially when they did so with the A1). One of their newer ones even doesnt habe a mechanical shutter, which introduces some problems people might not be aware of.

On Canon you either get entry level RF lenses, or you are forced to use massive and expensive RF L lenses, or front heavy adapted EF lenses. -Sony has loads of high quality, light and fast focusing primes. Great vid! I’m a portrait photographer and I started with R6 and also got the R5. Add lenses I was invested over $10,000. When the A7iv came out I ended up selling all my canon gear and made the switch to Sony. The cost is way to much for good glass with canon. Even if I use the adapter and use ef is still more pricey than buying a brand new tamron or sigma. Luckily I was the resell market for lenses and cameras for canon is real good and I was able to get most my money back. To be honest other than losing 17 megapixels from the r5 I don’t see a big difference in image quality and dynamic range. Autofocus is great on both however I just found the Sony a little more grippy on the eye. Both camera companies are amazing. To me it depends on what you want. If you are a photographer who is in need of a lot of glass I would recommend Sony. I really don’t see canon opening the RF connection. They make a fortune with the glass. Add how good Tamron (35-150 f2-2.8🤩) is getting with their glass I don’t think they want the competition on their own bodies.
@Seitenwerk

The prices definitely increased for he premium glasses but on the other hand I think they are definitely worth the price. Seeing that Sony charges basically the same for their premium lenses I dont see much difference there. The EF Glases on the other hand a usually cheaper with Canon, at least the last time a colleague wanted to choose between Canon or Sony, all cheaper lenses were around double the price back then. I dont think Canon sees any reason to open their market at they are leading with the lenses and when it comes to premium ones, there is currently no competition. Professional photographers have no problem investing a bit more when they know they get something for their money or especially when its such exotic lenses like the rf 28-70 f2 which positively changes their workflow, and are not available with Sony. Or lenses like the 85 f1.2 which is nearly flawless (and the DS version which is another crazy exotic lens). I think the price is absolutely justified but of course not everyone needs that. For those there are all the EF Glases and third party are indeed starting to come out. The market is still very young so its impressive what they actually managed to put out in such a short time.

Look I appreciate this video very much , although I do believe the video should be tittled something more along side the lines of why you should go with the canon r6 instead of the Sony IV as I felt your biased more towards cannon as everytime you brought a pro towards Sony like the obvious 33mp vs 20mp you didn’t mention things like print sizes, crop factor as in how much you can crop into a photo, instead you would try show how canon is almost if not is just as good on image quality only but forgetting the rest. ofc its just as good , they’re priced to compete with one another thats why it’s a hard choice but saying things like ofc sony can punch in more but canon is just as good, always bringing cannon to light whenever Sony has a pro but not doing the same when Sony has a con … I love canon and I own 3 of them but you got to say it like it is , like all the extra buttons sony has you didn’t go further into that because it made canon look bad ? People need to know these things so they understand on how much they could potentially be loosing on in terms of customisation if they choose canon in the end. Try to be more unbiased next time and go in the middle if you review this video you’ll see what I mean

I went with Sony because I thought the eye focus would be the best. It was ok until the firmware patch. Now it's just amazing. But the other big reason why I went Sony was the lens selection. It's far more about the glass than the camera..

Yea, Sony opening their mount up to the aftermarket has done great things. Sony also having mirrorless system on the market longer simply means that native lens catalog is second to none.

I’ve had the R6 and have the Sony a7iv and the canon r6 dpaf2 is waaay better especially for bird wildlife photography it makes cheap lenses look sharp. Sonys AF on the other hand always grabs straight lines wires cables instead of the bird right in front. Sony needs to put the A1 AF in this camera just how canon did with the R7

@@lewcehjitl3282 Weird. I haven't had any issues like that with mine. Just locks on the birds' eye.

@@SuperiorityQomplex maybe quality control? I use the Sony 200-600 lens worked flawlessly with my a7iii raw 10fps. Now with my a7iv I can’t even open raw files so I shoot jpegs only to get 10fps as well.

@@lewcehjitl3282 I have a pirated copy of photoshop and I found the drivers for the raw files on the Adobe site. I tried linking it here for you but youtube didn't like that and deleted the link.
