Hands-on review of the Sony A8F OLED 4k HDR TV
www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
The Sony A8F is an OLED TV with excellent performance across the board. In this review, we compare it with 4 popular models.
Full review: www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/son...
In a dark room the A8F can produce perfectly deep blacks, and for those with wide seating it remains accurate when viewed at an angle. Unfortunately, there may be a risk of burn-in with static content and the whole screen can’t get bright.
Model tested: 55” (XBR55A8F)
Should also be valid for the 65” (XBR65A8F).

Important topics that reviewers overlook is image DETAIL and upscaling. As only a small percentage of what we watch day-to-day is 4K, the TV's upscaling is supremely important. Sony's processing is widely considered the best at this. They're also widely considered to have the best motion handling. Sony has a seldom discussed feature called Digital Reality Creation. It's not sharpening (edge enhancement) but a more refined setting that extracts more detail from the image. It's set to zero in many default picture modes, so Sony TVs initially look as soft as LG and Samsung, but after you tweak it, the Sony has image DETAIL that the others cant match. I've NEVER heard Digital Reality Creation mentioned by reviewers. Do they even know it exists? They rarely discuss image detail. It's mostly about black level and input lag. P.S. Sony's operating system (Android TV) and its lack of processing power is a disgrace, which has been seriously testing my Sony loyalty for years. If it wasn't for their DRC, upscaling and motion handling, I'd be buying the LG C8 tomorrow.
@TheRafcave
@TheRafcave 6 лет назад
gorillapancake What's your detail settings at now?
@gorillapancake
@gorillapancake 6 лет назад
I'll push the sharpness until the edge enhancement is visible, then I'll bring up the DRC until there's too much grit in the image. Setting the DRC to 50/100 will improve the image dramatically.

Sony’s edge detection enhancement and digital reality creation is just awesome, i completely agree with what u say, i have 55” sony bravia kdl55w, i bought this in 2014 and i had great experience using that, now am buying a8f 65” for another room, the older sony is still going strong for all gaming, movie and tv serial experiences.

Rtings.com I´m interested in sub-pixel structure of Sony A1E and Sony A8F. I´ve read Sony used 2018 sub-pixel structure for Sony A8F. There are some minor improvements like bigger blue sub-pixels which may cause slower burning-in, higher brightness, etc. Can you check if the new 2018 sub-pixel structure is used for A1 produced this year (2018)? Because production of A1E still continue in 2018 and I don´t believe LG made 2017 panels for Sony. I prefer A1E but these are major reasons for me to buy A8F. Thanks a lot.

Maybe someone could answer this for me I have had a couple of LG Oled’s of which when you pause something on the DVR after a minute or two the screen dims then the minute you release pause it brightens again for the A8F Sony that I just bought doesn’t do that. I’m wondering if there something wrong I’m afraid of burn in, did anybody else notice this?

I'm not yet sold on OLEDs, as impressive as they are. Yes, their image quality is second-to-none, but I'm still not sold on their long-term usage. Burn-in is still an issue (though less likely if you vary your viewing habits), nevertheless, the way the pixels work, with no backlight and each individual pixel as its own light source, I can see OLEDs having problems with brightness issues down the road. I'm glad Rtings is doing the long-term tests on their OLED panels, because that may tell the story. For now, I'll stick with high-end LEDs. I have the Sony 55" X900E and it's fantastic. Deep blacks (near OLED-level), excellent picture quality (the best of any LED panel, in my opinion), bright and vivid HDR content, excellent motion handling, and low input lag for gaming. It's got everything you could ever want in a TV, and LED longevity is tried and proven.

@mattgiunt 6 лет назад
Its not about the price as much as its about getting to see what the new processor will accomplish. If I have to wait a year I will but it just seems odd that Sony is not upping its game this year and loosing business to other companies.
@jrzez
@jrzez 6 лет назад
Um it's more so that other companies are playing catch up to the X1-E processor and even still the Sony still upscales better than all the others. They're not releasing a new OLED before the end of the year, period. Maybe a Z9F LED TV, but still. I don't understand where people come up with this stuff.
@Vailiate
@Vailiate 6 лет назад
This TV is amazing, though only got it because I was able to get it at a low price of $1200CDN. But if i was in the market for an OLED and paying current retail prices, the LG C7 would have my vote in terms of value. I'm a bit disappointed in the review as it did not touch base on more of a comparison to the A1E. I hope they make a future video going more in depth of the differences other than talking about the stands. Such as the A8F having two 40mm woofers compared to A1E's single 60mm woofer, and the X motion clarity, which makes a huge difference.

@dash397
@dash397 6 лет назад
some people don't care for input lag and the Sony has the better upscaler so 1080p games will look better sharper more detailed also Sony has a feature that boosts details in the image called reality creation. crazy how everyone is hung up on input lag when it doesnt even matter for single player games as long as its within the 40ms range which all Sony TV are
@dash397
@dash397 6 лет назад
40ms is completely fine for most single player games (not first person shooters) any less and you will have to sacrifice picture quality and brightness
@AirShadowRasengan
@AirShadowRasengan 6 лет назад
This is what I think too. I'm using a Samsung ks7090 without game mode for my PS4 games which has over 100ms input lag. I don't even recognize the input lag. Probably the reason is because I never played with 20ms seconds before. I better don't try this out in the future. :D
@gorillapancake
@gorillapancake 6 лет назад
Finally... Reality Creation gets some respect! It's set to zero on many default picture modes, so Sony TVs initially look as soft as LG and Samsung, but after you tweak the setting, Sony TVs have image DETAIL that the others cant match. I've NEVER heard Reality Creation mentioned by reviewers. Do they even know it exists? Nor do they discuss image detail. It's mostly about black level and input lag.

Guys can someone help me with this question? So i just bought this tv and i love it. I just have an issue with cinemotion... what is that? Im trying to achieve perfect smooth motion with my tv. For instance, i was watching it in 4k last night and i noticed some “ghosting” around the characters while they moved at times... what is that called? I noticed that motionis best with cinemotion on, but thats when i noticed the “ghosting” surrounding the characters at points... how do i achieve perfect motion but without the ghosting?
@AdAstra78
@AdAstra78 5 лет назад
Sorry I'm sure you've found the solution by now, but I'd recommend playing around with 'Film Mode' as that has some quite significant effect on artifacts. I have my Film Mode set at medium, with reality creation off, motion set to smooth and set the smoothness bar at 3...& it looks pretty awesome. There are still occassional imperfections, but they're rare and barely noticeable...& the motion is just perfect...

Vertical banding/lines on 2018 models seems to be improved (at CES 2018 people noticed the pixel structure on the OLEDs was slightly different, so they're using a newer panel). It's possibly you might get lucky with some 2017 OLEDs but I have an A1E (2017) that I previously exchanged 4 times and still ended up with noticeable vertical banding/lines. In comparison, the A8F I bought last month has virtually no vertical banding/lines. For me, that's worth the price difference alone. Otherwise, I would recommend waiting until a good sale for 2018 models.

I am a Sony fanboy but I really don't feel like the massive price gap between the Sony OLED's and LG OLED's is worth it. The C7 is £2500 and the A1 is £3300. I also have a dedicated surround sound so while the acoustic surface is cool it is ultimately irrelevant to me. I'm assuming other people who buy OLED TV's probably have a dedicated HT setup too. I also don't like how the Sony elevates black levels to reduce the gap between black and just above black. Just don't know how they can justify a £800 premium over the LG OLED.

Caroline Stevens, thank you for your response. May I ask what problems you refer to inherent in the technology itself? I am aware that the making the screen smaller than the one displayed at the CES (146 feet I believe) is an issue but I don't know if that would constitute a problem with the technology itself. Anyway, how long away do you think mass production is from now? I have heard four years. After all, the timetable is already set for a release this year for the "wall". (the 146 foot version) And keep in mind you did state that you were giving OLED a few years down the road to perfect their technology. (it was with that in mind that I said what I said regarding MIcroLED)

From the display of the 146 inch wall, there was issues of seeing individual tiles in dark scenes and the screen has a funny looking surface to it....The micro-led technology is incredibly promising but there are issues associated with it....I think consumers are going to choke when they see the 1st price tags of these new TVs...Get ready to shell out 5-10 K for a 55 inch TV in 2019 and far more for anything larger.

Caroline Stevens, I was aware of the tile issue as well. But I am not sure I would qualify that as a problem inherent in the "technology" of MicroLED. I do agree with you on the price point being prohibitive to start off with. But such seems to be the case with all new technology. Plasma too was crazily priced when it first came out.

What worth all your calibration and appreciation If nobody has your calibrations? What do you expect a person here to buy for $ 2,000 TV calibration equipment for $ 20,000? All your grades do not help anyone.

Not accurate, each screen needs direction separately! The orientation of their screen does not match the screen you're using

DDDE44 then what do you expect them to do? Come out to your house and calibrate your tv for free?

Calibrate the screen with a calibration disc that fits most people! And no equipment of $ 20,000 + course to run these devices at $ 5,000

This TV is out of consideration due to 2 minute auto dimming introduced in latest firmware as a anti-burn in measure. Had my wallet ready too. They should have mentioned this when they spoke about burn in. The sound of this TV is stunning, this should have been mentioned because it's a money saver compared to a samsung which will probably require a soundbar. Finally, stuttering android menu on a £2.5k tv, no thanks Sony :(

I really liked the new Sony in store, but people moan about android. Can I ask, how do you find it - is it okay?

R0CKY44 Well It's slower than most other brands but It gets the job done. And U have faith that the Android Oreo update 8 will fix everything. I love this TV. My videos can show you. 🙂👍🏽

That 40ms input lag was a huge disappointment... else I would maybe bought it but now this tv is out of the picture
@jrzez
@jrzez 6 лет назад
Why? It's only in 1080p/60 content? All the new consoles and PC supports 2160p... And if you don't have a PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, or a weak PC, why don't you get it if you obviously have the money for this set in the first place? Makes no sense.
@AirShadowRasengan
@AirShadowRasengan 6 лет назад
So that means when I'm playing on PS4 pro with 2160p settings I definitely get the lower input lag? Even if the game has no PS4 pro patch?
@hanes2
@hanes2 6 лет назад
Some games run better in 1080p/60fps rather then 4k/30fps. That's just how it is.
@der_dude1425
@der_dude1425 6 лет назад
The PS4 Pro always outputs 4K when connected to a 4K TV, no matter if the game runs in 1080p, 1800p or even 4K, it gets upscaled to 4K anyway! So you always get the low 4K input lag!
@SerxRox
@SerxRox 6 лет назад
I'd give 40ms for the hugely higher upscaling quality. Trust me.
