I appreciate it cause I been looking for a lot of low light uses for this camera since the price is amazing, cause a lot of I been seeing have been 50/50 and etc when it comes to low light. This REALLY was helpful asf honestly.

Still use my two A6500 cameras since 2017 and they’re both on tripod stands but the image quality 4K 24p still holds up to this day. I have an FX3 for my A camera and going to get my hands on an FX30 this coming week when it gets released so thanks for your video cuz I figured it would be amazing in low light wedding situations regardless 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I did return my 2nd FX3 to order an FX30 and the lowlight is the only thing that held me back in the beginning. But after lots of consideration, saving $2k is worth it. And having 2 FX3 is a bit wasteful!

Great Vid...I bought a pair of FX30 units. Went out and did some low light testing. I used only street lamps, and window lighting from shops. It worked great. Did another vid in a low light church, 120 feet from subject in low lighting. Worked great. I am very pleased with the low light performance. I agree as well, 10 bit, Slog 3, 422, 14+ stops dynamic range...at this point it is the user not the camera. I was checking out some colorists on DaVinci resolve and they are also blown away by this (entry level) camera. I just need to get out there now and get some projects going!! Again great vid.

any thoughts on rolling shutter. I shoot mostly on shoulder rig, doc style. will that shake be bad on fx30?

ProAV have just done some tests between the FX30 FX3 and BMPCC 6K - the lowlight is surprisingly good on the FX30.

I'm about to buy a new Panasonic S5 for my first full frame camera, in large part because of anamorphic support, among a lot of other awesome things, including price, but my a6400 will always be a big part of my work. Agree with everything you said! I've used a6400 and a6500 for years filming weddings and they performed great in low light so the FX30 will perform even better. Also completely agree about the bs that they call it "just a beginner camera". Great video!

Hi Vu, thank you for your videos, they are so helpful. When shooting slog, can you expose using the rec 709 conversion lut "eyeing it" to make sure nothing is clipping? Do you recommend shooting in slog in lower light or prefer using something else like s cinetone?

Beginner videographer here. What is your opinion on using FX30 for darker, cloudy, forest, dusk, predawn nature videos? Could I get enough shadow details with F1.4 or 1.8 lens using ISO2500? Is the FX3 or A7S III full frame sensor significantly different in these scenarios? Much appreciated!

I've been making my RU-vid videos for 15 years now and with my budget I still have ZERO control over the lighting. I film in my living room next to a giant glass window (22nd floor, on the sunny side), and my SONY a6500 starts to struggle with the lighting and autofocus after 4pm, so I need to film earlier than that. Also, I need to film on sunny days, because the a6500 struggles when the weather is cloudy. Would the FX30 perform better in my "difficult" lighting situation?

My only concern with the FX30 is having to buy (and carry around) additional APS-C lenses on the wide end. Do you think the Sigma 11-20/2.8 can cover it all? I don’t feel like lugging around the Sigma 14-24 all the time cuz it’s heavy. I’ve got the rest of the focal lengths covered with FE lenses.

Yup, all of this. Sony shooter here for 12 years now and shoot a lot of low light/live events. I have also shot with: RED ONE, RED Scarlet, RED Epic, RED Monstro, Panasonic EVA1, ARRI Mini, ARRI ALEXA, Panasonic GH5, Blackmagic ALL OF THEM and many, many more. Having an FX3 and A7iV, I'm looking at the FX30 as B cam/backup.

I'm the guy who asked you whether you thought a refresh of the a6XXX line was possible, and you said that it will come right after the FX30. We still didn't get any news from Sony, and the more time that passes, the less likely I think this could happen this year. Do you still think we can expect an announcement?

What is the best lens for filming live bands in small clubs?

I have the A7IV. I was going to get a Pocket 4K but now thinking of this as a second camera.

Second base ISO (slog3) in aps-c mode on A7IV (and fx30) is noisier than first base iso. In full frame mode (A7IV) both base isos are equally good.

A74 in crop mode and 3200 iso how does it perform?

In every field I have worked in there has always been and there will always be snobs that will focus on the weaknesses of equipment. In the last 40 years I have predominantly worked in the audio field and I constantly hear people putting down equpiment for not being good enough, focusing on the equipments weaknesses, as if it is all the fault of the equipment. My analogy has always been that if you put a cheap Chinese acoustic guitar in the hands of Eric Clapton, he will still make it sound good. Let us take The Creator for instance. I have lost count of how many people have pointed out that it was shot on an FX3 and how beautiful it looks ("If I get that camera I can make a feature film that good"). They never mention the multiple lenses used. They never mention the skill of the director, DP, actors, lighting crew, location scouts, editor, color graders. It is always just the FX3. But I also think people often blame equipment as a form of creative procrastination. It is their way of justifying why they didn't do a certain thing creatively, or why they didn't go 100% on a project, or why something didn't turn out the way they wanted it to. It is also a way to justify them spending way too much money on equipment. Finally, I have never understood why people focus on the equipment used in the first place. I was a photographer for years and often people would say "Wow I love that photo, which camera did you use?" as if it was the camera that took the photo and that if they owned that camera they would be able to take that same exact shot. It didn't matter that I had spent years studying my craft, equipment, composition, etc. All that mattered was what camera I used. Go figure. Anyway, thank you for the video and thank you for being somebody who was not scared to say the criticisms are BS and that it is about learning your equipment and learning your craft.

Bingo, a professional should be adding lighting and look for the best lighting when he can. You're getting paid the buku bucks. It's amazing how many people just talk about cranking iso and then they complain about crappy footage.

Yeah brother tell em! Most people don't understand native iso. Just set it on up on the fx30 to only use native. I think the a7iii set up unreal expectations for cameras moving forward in the photography world and now all these photographer are getting into video like "what do you mean I can't just get supper clean images at any iso?" I know this is 3 months old but I wholeheartedly agree, everyone keeps complaining about the low light, thats such a simple fix...Light your videos. I dont know what people are expecting these cameras to do, what, expose a stop over in a dark cave?

Where are the low-light shots?

I got my FX30 and this "dual iso" is a real BS. Noise gets higher step by step and there is no any difference between 2000 and 2500 ISO. Noise changes linearly

I recently did some tests comparing my 6400 apsc vs A7IV FullFrame in low light, and I was very surprised to see that the noise quality is basically the same, when setting both up to have the same DOF. The trick is, that APS-C has a huge advantage when it comes to Aperture & the amout of light you get through the lens, while on FullFrame you can go higher in ISO. In my tests it evens out. So if you don't need super shallow depth of field I think APSC might actually be the smarter choice. Lighter gear for gimbals... Just don't confuse it with the aps-c crop mode (on Cameras like the A7IV). In apsc-crop modes on FF cameras you'll have much larger noise pixels. But in actual filming-reality I think even this is negligable.

Dude, I'm like a next level amazing editor... But if I ever get married, I want you to film it and edit it :) For dancing, cranking the shutter is actually helpful, it makes the movements look crisper and "faster". If you watch Hollywood movies, they rarely use 180 for dance scenes.

As a documentary filmmaker who shoots a lot of nighttime run and gun in the forest, caves, mountains, etc. I just want to know how this camera compares to the a7s3 and at what ISO it starts falling apart. I watched through the 10min patiently waiting for actual sample footage of how high you can bring the ISO on the FX30 so I can judge for myself to what extend it can be pushed. Instead it's just 10min of him repeating the same thing about why he thinks people might not need super low light capabilities because he assumes everyone either works on production sets or shoots weddings.
