This one's a little bit different insofar as we're looking at a machine I've never had the pleasure of working on and is also a little bit out of my comfort zone. This is a Sony HVR-M15AE DVCAM Digital HD video recorder and it was a little odd; it had a almost ripped off back tension band and the supply reel is jamming. I now have a fair idea of what's causing the issue but comments from anyone more experienced than me on working on this vintage of machine would be gratefully received.
These aren't the best decks in my humble opinion and look to be quite fragile but it has done 20+ years of service so I guess you really can't complain!

Hi, Alex. DVCAM and DVC-PRO machines have a common issue with the pinch roller plastic clip falling off that holds it into place. The mode switch can also become dirty or faulty which will cause the take up reel issues. The dropouts on the image can be caused by SMD capacitors on the Video board. Check the esr on all the SMD caps. For image dropouts, DVC-PRO and DVCAM well know for the SMD caps going high in esr. The heads look okay on this machine. Also try a input source to see if there are any issues with the video input image which will indicate a problem with SMD caps if the input is distorted. Try cleaning all the sensors on the deck. Best of Luck...

Thank you so much - sort of what I was thinking to be honest and really appreciated. I'm so tight on time I think I just needed a little nudge in the right direction and you've given me that.

Hi Alex. According to 12voltvids, isopropyl doesn’t work on the metal formulation of tapes in these kinds of digital machines, the only way to clean the heads is with a proper cleaning tape, though he sometimes gently uses his finger nail to unclog them, which seems to work. Just running the tape in picture search often works, apologies if I’m stating the obvious to someone as expert at audio/video repairs. Interesting video, as all of yours are. Cheers, Rob.

Hi Rob, absolutely correct. Lots of footage missing from this one but I thought I'd contaminated the drum and i can't find my DV cleaning tape (I have a new sealed one on the way anyway!) but it does look like there's quite a bit more wrong with the machine than I initially hoped! Lots more to come... Cheers 😊

I would check the repair you did, looks like clutch tension problem .Also clean the mode switch..Interesting video good luck with it..

Thank you - yes, I am now wondering if when the carriage is down it fouls the back tension band assembly now it has the extra bulk ut it was giving the issue when the band was without the extra bulk but we'll see. Definitely want to clean the mode switch - it really does sort of feel like a mode switch issue at least in part. Also wondering on capacitors on the video head apparent clog issue but we'll see! Thank you so much.

Luckily I don't know these devices yet. But I know that SONY would never sell unsound designs😉

Don't get me wrong, they are super machines but of a time... And getting older... Sony always design things perfectly of course! 😵

I have one of these machines. Mine has had a few issues that I am slowly working through but it mostly works ok at the moment. It sometimes fails to eject the tape and it's the same with both full size and miniDV tapes. No error code comes up. Pressing the eject button a second time (after a sequence of 3 clicks has stopped) and the tape comes out. It suggests to me that it hasn't quite completed something before it tries to lift the tape. Note that MiniDV tapes don't come out any further than shown in your video. Full size DV tapes do come out further. You might find it helpful to watch the following video that shows a DSR-11 (similar tape deck) that was failing to load. This was due to overloading the PSU due to a stiff pinch roller mechanism. Careful lubrication with Molykote resolved the issue. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wzW7NU2cVOs.html

That's great information, thank you. Yes, realised the MiniDV doesn't eject further than it is on this machine and it does sort of make sense that it doesn't. I guess I just need to work through the deck the same way I do with everything else but interesting on the power supply loading with mechanical jams - will certainly keep that in mind - thank you 😊

Hi, i have a Sony T9 ME like in one of your videos and i tried cleaning the heads and picture still disappears every 5 to 10 seconds when playing a tape. The sound is fine. What do you think the problem is?

I would say you have servo issues due to the light blue Sanyo capacitors on the servo board. It'll be the head drum caps that you're having the issues with and you may even hear it hunting slightly when the picture disappears but change them all and you should be good to go.
