Fascinating, intricate work, thanks for showing this - you're the Hi-MD doctor! Love my Hi-MD's, hope they won't ever need this kind of work. These are the mid-range models of the time, and the motors are a bit grindy sounding like this, but you learn to live with it 🙂

For the grinding sound i have found that cleaning the sled rails should be cleaned. Then apply a small amount of sewing machine oil. You could try lithium grease, but that was not original lubricant used by the factory. The nylon gears need no lubrication.

Nice work, especially as someone else had been in there before you. Regarding HiMD recording, optical in might be an easy solution if you have a PC with an optical out. If not, I think audio out cards or USB adapters sometimes include optical out. It would be real-time recording, but that might be the only option without compatible software.
