Sony wants to build some cars! Sony surprised CES 2022 by announcing their new Sony Mobility Inc. But how would this work? Who would build the Sony car? Luckily Sony has a strong partner, a company you've probably never heard of. But will it be successful like the Playstation? Or flop like the Vita?

Sony did sell the battery business in 2017. I don't think they will have an advantage in that regard. Maybe they get some decent conditions, but they are no longer in control.

Sony also disrupted the photography industry by providing cutting edge technology that providers like canon & nikon had been reserving for their high end cameras. They pretty much forced canon & nikon's hand & now the whole industry has moved from DSLR to mirrorless. DON'T SLEEP ON SONY. They know how to enter a market & they have the tech to back it up.

Really good point! Then they took their sensor tech fron their mirrorless cameras and made camera sensors for phones that didn't suck. Now they sell to most other phone makers too.

They had made electronic stuff before, so the leap was smaller. But mechanical things on such a scale may be better left to more experienced competitors. Although, with Tesla and other startups chiming in, a decisive decision can't be made.

Another JDM company 👍 In reality I believe a tech company with Sony’s resume getting into the car industry is going to work out perfectly. They have the technology to kit their cars out, the pockets to successfully work with their partners, and the experience competing and getting the one up on rival companies.

They’re producing military weapon used vehicles for the Japan Defense forces and are a key partner in the developing of Japans 6th generation fighter jet already shocking the aviation industry by developing the first ever ELECTRIC jet engines for the aircraft , engines that will be much more efficient, fly faster , longer , at higher elevations not needing oxygen like jet engines and produce a ton of power for direct energy weapons (Lasers) planned to be placed on Japan, US and Chinas developing 6th Gen fighters. I’m super impressed and they were smart to also take part in the injected Billions of dollars Japans putting into defense contractors locally there. Sony and Mitsubishi both are surprising defense contractors jsut stepping in the game and developing tech not seen in weapons before.

I had a Sony Bravia TV (1080i supported) and even though it got hit multiple times throughout the years it stills perform very well for 12 years ! Imagine how long and how good the Sony car would be.

My 1st smartphone was Sony Xperia Z3. It was good at that time, but the unlock switch gone error in 3 years, so i bought Xperia Z5. It has simmilar problem which is heat, i even had to put it in freezer in order to cool it down. Now i use Samsung because it has better heat management. Yes, some of their product is very reliable. Diskman, PS3, headset, had lasted 5-6 years. If this car is ever launched, i hope it'll be more reliable than their existing products, especially smartphones.

All the sony devices I've owned over the years (phones, tvs, stereo systems) had zero major issues- 100 percent reliability rating means something to a lot of us; especially in cars. Sony just knows what they are doing except for the pricing sometimes.

That'll probably an option in the system settings; They'll probably also include a PS5 in the infotainment system which'll work when the car is stationary, maps will use OpenStreetMap and the OS will be based on FreeBSD which is the back-end of the PS4 System Software and likely for the PS5 as well... ...that could also mean that the car comes with a terminal application allowing for more hacks/changes/modifications than probably most cars being sold brand new today...

This doesn't seem like a stretch. Sony has a lot of experience in taking already existing technologies and making them better and cheaper. And, they have no legacy costs that say Toyota or Honda has. That being said, if Sony hooked up with Toyota it would help both. Sony would get into the space and Toyota could use the Sony name to bridge the to electric vechicles and avoid Osbourne issues.

No stretch at all, used to be a prototype test driver for Toyota/Lexus in Arizona. You'd be surprised to hear that manufacturers work closely together now compared to decades ago. In fact Land Rover, Tesla, Subaru and Jaguar share the test track and the engineers often will work on certain problems together too when needed. That being said, not to sure how welcoming the established industry will embrace outside competition.

I have been thinking ever since I heard about this SONY EV that they should hook up with Toyota (boom chika bow wow) since not only are they both Japanese, but Toyota recently admitted they are four years behind in software for EVs while SONY is four years ahead of them having been developing the UI, and platform for the Vision S since 2018.

One of your best vids! Love the graphics, and subtle step up on the production style Team Donut! The little clicks at the end of each segment, and Nolan's flow into the next topic shortly after, really helped the pacing. Oh, and the Sony/MS collab? Super well covered! You forgot to mention that after Sony’s potential collaboration with Nitendo fell through, they attempted to do something similar with SEGA. Except even though that SEGA North America’s board was fully for it, SEGA’s overall CEO said no and that and Sony’s “Price Heard Around the World” at the initial E3 convention were two of the biggest factors that contributed to the fall of SEGA from the console market. Also the reason why the Saturn sold so little in five months because they rushed the release with a surprise announcement that it was available the same day at E3, months ahead of schedule and before the development and gaming library of release titles were even fully complete.

I worked for TRW (well, ZF-TRW now) at a stamping plant making seat belt parts. There's a while litany of companies who actually build automotive components. The actual final assembly might be done at the the Ford or GM plant (for example), but much of the individual components are made and assembled in factories run by companies like ZF-TRW and Magna.

They should partner with Mazda. It's literally the perfect marriage: Mazda is an independent and smallish manufacturer with poor autonomous and electric technology but great chassis and dynamic engineering. Sony could bring some of that advanced technology and funding.

They have developed a driving A.I. for GT7. Im sure that will also help them in developing self driving.

@@dbclass4075 They already have been doing so. They literally have been developing those aspects of the Vision S for the last four years. As far as real road experience goes. They can combine it with the A.I they developed for GT7. There is certainly a lot of overlap in that. If nothing else it does put them in a unique position in having a computer game to help develop it, as well as their best in the world image sensors and the aforementioned 4 years of development on the Vision S. How far they are....your guess is as good as mine. But I wouldnt assume they far behind given the said unique set of assets they posses.

Sony usually puts out great products when venturing into other tech fields or pushing the envelope in existing tech. Think Sony Vaio, the Mini Disc, PSP and TVs. Imagine the tech interface they could offer inside a car!

What you’re underestimating is that when they launched the PlayStation they already had a distribution network and a bunch of retailers in place globally. Whereas for a car they’re starting from zero and facing all the same legislative and logistical barriers every other startup does. That’s what killed Dyson’s car - they hadn’t thought through how to sell it B2C because they were so busy concentrating on making the car itself

Nip down your local Sony dealer? No, they don’t exist, because Sony don’t sell cars. Ok so Sony could sell one to you directly? Sure but that involves working out how they’re going to import it, deliver it, take the cash from you, sell you the finance to pay for it, offer you servicing on it… etc. The boring, practical bits about buying a car. For PS5 and cameras they already have Gamestonk (etc) to do that for them

I'd see that as the biggest factor. The price, longevity, and range of an electric car, the most important concerns, are mostly about the battery technology, so I feel like a company with good battery tech in their pocket is a great starting point for an EV company. Perhaps better even than a company with a lot of automotive experience but no battery tech. Say Toyota and Sony, I'd almost think Sony has a better shot. If those two worked together, everyone else is doomed.

Real into detail preparation instead of just throwing brags out there. I love Sony for their understated, nonchelant position with their products. Besides my beloved headphones, TV's, PS's, camera and stereo equipment I always liked the phones they make, even today I use one and my friends always raise their eyebrow... I just have a little chuckle like "you just don't know it mate".

Sony has also recently taken over the digital camera market. It used to be Nikon vs Canon and now it's Sony vs Canon. They're even getting deals with Associated Press and others to be the official camera for their photography teams. It will be interesting to see if they do crack into the automotive space. They could really stir the waters.

In hindsight, the original Playstation was a no-brainer, as Sony had the manufacturing plants to make their own parts which Sega and Nintendo didn't (putting them at a huge cost advantage), and Sega was still focused on pushing their software over third-party games (a little baffling, considering how big a part third-party games played in the success of the Genesis), while Nintendo was also turning third-parties away by sticking with expensive cartridges. The Playstation was easier to develop for, with better tools than either the Saturn or the N64. More importantly, Sony had WAY more money to throw at their console than any of the other companies, and they knew how to create a good marketing campaign. Sony would have had to severely screw up for the Playstation to fail, although Sega screwing themselves over left and right and Nintendo's hardware delays certainly helped a bit. I would love to see Sony enter the EV space. For one thing, their designs look pretty good. I doubt they'd rise to any kind of leadership position, as I'm assuming their yearly output wouldn't be as high as some other manufacturers, but I bet they'd sell pretty well.

I'm a huge fan of Sony. Everything I've owned/used from them over the years (Discman, several pairs of headphones, TV's, PS2, boom box, stereos, VCR, DVD player, home theater receiver, and 3 Xperia smartphones including my current one) has been great. I wouldn't doubt for a second that they can make a better electric car than Tesla.

Well, you can hear cooling fans typical from ICE vehicles. Although EVs have less waste heat, they do still use radiators for the batteries.

Magna Steyr has also built race cars for professional race teams. Magna built the X-Raid Dakar Minis that were dominant for a number of years. Magna is a top level manufacturer.

Honestly, it’s not really that surprising given the fact that EV forgo one of the most costly factors of cars; which is the R&D of the drivetrain itself. EVs are more like technology on wheels which significantly reduces the barrier to entry. Although Sony may not have direct automotive experiences, what they do have is decades of manufacturing, marketing, capital, and brand recognition. If Tesla who literally had 0 years of experiences can produce and market an EV, Sony would have no doubt be able to produce a higher quality car than Tesla.

Seriously, look it up. Personally, wouldn't buy a car from a company that doesn't have a motorsports division for their R&D. Racing is where the components are tested to their limits of reliability.

Similar thing in the camera market, they do not dominate in the sold cameras itself, but they are by large the biggest manufacturer of CCDs, the sensors, with a market share of 41%. So for autonomous driving it might be handy to be a giant in this key technology.

The Magna partnership is bigger then you realize Nolan. Frank Stronach the owner of magna was obsessed with the electric vehicle long before any of the companies were even considering it or tesla even existed but ran into huge confrontation from major companies like GM and Crysler that they were developing parts for because they realized he could hurt their sales. The armored truck company I used to work at is in a magna building in Newmarket Ontario Canada where Magna is very dominant. Many of his prototype vehicles were stored in the warehousing area of the plant. Including an early 80's GMC panel van with electric forklift motor and a trailer for the batteries required to power it.
