I was totally not expecting that zoom. Wow, I was expecting more software additions like you outlined but this is a nice hardware addition. Thanks for the video Juan.
Glad that Sony is keeping the features I love, considering LG has left the phone market. I'm also hoping this means a price drop on Xperia 1 III. The one mildly annoying thing is knowing about the Thermal Issues as I drive for a living, so phone is on the window sort of on a holder while I do deliveries and can cause some running heat.
Yeah, kinda hope phones have more low thermal, focused mode where everything is put down other than the one on the screen. GPS is always a thermal and battery hog, but I hope at least the HS power control make it not as hot as charging while using GPS.
I love Juan review. So much packed with detail that we sometimes ignored or uneducated with. Not like others that make video as main purpose is to gain more views in sublime way of editing.
GSMArena already posted their full review of this phone. 100 hours of battery endurance rating is impressive considering the new chipset and only 500mAh increase from the Mk3 Xperia 1. Definitely in my wish list.
That audio editing software.. is a killer. Mark 4 is turning into a workstation-in-a-pocket! Xperia is indeed a doorway to all Sony had in their disposal.
As a hr professional I use my hotspot alot and being able to keep it plugged in and not beat the crap out of the battery is a hell of a plus for me.. well done sony
Love what they did here. Incremental updates where needed (brighter screen, battery, selfie cam, 512GB standard), and some cool improvements (variable optical zoom on the telephoto, VideoPro added, new Music pro). People will whine about TOO FEW MEGAPIXELS! Lol, but I'm all for rocking the 12MP and having *super* fast continuous shooting frame rates and write speeds, and don't overlook that lower MP count allows for much larger pixels on the sensor, and the associated low light advantages that come with it. And they kept all the great stuff (3.5mm, expandable memory, physical dualSIM, no damn notch, etc.). So overall a great device, *but* not quite sure it's worth an upgrade from my Xperia 1 III at $1,600 plus no high speed charger in box.
Really liking this new model. Won't be upgrading from my 1III of course, but this seems like a nice step forward and already looking forward to what Sony comes up with next!
I think Sony is getting closer and closer every year to blurring the lines between their Alpha cameras (the point and shoots anyway) and their Xperia phones. I genuinely believe that in a generation or two (maybe mark V or mark IV) Sony is going to have one hell of a camera system on their phones.
I really like your reviews, especially compared to other Americans. You concentrate on what really matters in a phone and especially when in comes to Sony. Keep up the good work fella 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
The 120fps shooting, sun viewable screen and 5K mAh and actually, 512 gb now... That's actually a detail most people gawking at the 1600 tag gonna miss. I still think Sony would better placed putting out a 5mk4 for us normies to use, but these feature set on the 1mk4 is just great to see. Also. Mr mobile noted the low light photos actually, despite the same sensor and lenses are a tad better than he expected.
@@MuhammadKharismawan I definitely hope so since the Xperia 5 always tend to cost somewhere between $300 to $500 less than the Xperia 1 while packing the same chipset and camera hardware.
I am pretty sure the reason people are "disappointed" by the xperia iV is simply because of how good the previous phones were. Sony phones already had a lot of features, there's only so much Sony can do now, as it's difficult to further "complete" an already complete package. I am just thankful they are sticking to the features they already have, and not cutting "legacy" features. That said, I am excited for a new mid tier Xperia 10 iV!
STILL trying to find a reason to move from my LG V60 and it still feels like other companies are playing catch up. Pro Video Mode, Studio Mics, 10X zoom WHILE recording, 8K recording, 5000 MaH, Zoom Audio, ASMR, Concert Recording mode, man I can keep going. What phone is worth the jump?
9:17 Small detail, but I love that! The US usually gets shafted when it comes to bigger internal storage options on Android. So its nice that this is officially here for US versions so unlike the mk.iii, US customers don't have to sacrifice other features like Wifi calling or 5G just to get the international versions to get 512 GB.
Hello Juan! Im considering getting either the Pro-i or the 1IV at the moment. Assuming them to be comparable in price, which do u think is a better buy if I mainly use it for stills and relatively long workdays?
Why is Juan having such low no of subscribers; when this Man deserves a LOT MORE.. Juan - Buddy, Help me understand - how is Sony addressing the OverHeating issue; while recording the Videos? how is Sony handling the Updates Cycle?
My favorite smartphone manufacturer I can never afford. The only Xperia I was able to get is Xperia ST21i back in 2012. I just love their design when it comes to smartphones. Classy without flashy gimmicks and I swear one of the only if not the only manufacturer who still implements LED notification.
Wonderful first look JB! Thank you for always having details. Much appreciated. An intelligent review is fast becoming an endangered species. I would love to hear your opinion on image quality between the Pro I and the 1 IV.....Sounds like a head to head review!
I hope I can! I really don't like digging deep into camera tech until it's a retail unit. That said, early impressions, the Pro-I is definitely better IQ, especially in darker conditions, but the 1iv is just so darn speedy...
Finally a complete view of this phone! My biggest concern is this phone overheating. But I think if you play videogames in a very cold environment, temperatures will never be an issue.
I'm currently on my third Sony phone, an Xperia 1 III. As someone who is photo savvy (I rely on my Canon DSLR for my day job), and is also an aspiring musician and lover of listening to music via wired headphones/speakers, I absolutely love what Sony is doing with these phones. I also appreciate how well these age, my last Xperia XZ2 Premium was almost 3 years old before being replaced and still works about as well now as it did new.
You know that it's a true 'pro' smartphone when Sony uses the specific details about the periscope zoom camera's range for marketing instead of using some basic "3x, 5x, 10x" terms or whatever to make it sound revolutionary. It's a real professional-use device when Sony states the specific details of its product in the forefront without the need to do more research about it.
Don't mind the megapickles, but I do wish they'd made the sensor a wee bit bigger (physically) for more light gathering. That said, those are still pretty big pixels compared to most flagship 50 MPs... and hardly anyone else does 4k120 tele, so that's still a big, big plus! Can't wait to see how the cameras do with final software build.
The Sony 1 series has been one of my favourite phones for the past few years. It checks all the boxes for me, and I’m loving the camera shutter button on the side. I’ve just started playing with my DSLR again, so tinkering with the 1’s camera features would be a fun experience for me. Unfortunately, Sony phones aren’t sold in Canada, and importing one is way too expensive for me. 🥺
@@SomeGadgetGuy But the Sony is soo nice…😍 Seriously though, I don’t need to upgrade often. I’m not a power user, nor do I need the latest and greatest year after year. Prior to getting my S10 in May 2019 I was still using the iPhone 4S I bought new in 2011. 😁 I was forced to upgrade when most of the apps I used no longer ran on iOS 9 (iOS 10 wasn’t supported on the 4S). And 64GB wasn’t working for me anymore - I had to manage my storage several times a week. I can probably get quite a few years out of my S10. (I say as I continue staring at the Sony)
Great video mate. Unlike other reviewers you don't review it like it's the finished product. Looking forward to seeing it when it's not the prototype x
This is the only kind of smartphone I truly salivate over. I mean I'm not even using anything remotely like it and may never choose to, because my phone only really needs to be a good communicator with the ability to do social media and nice automatic snapshots. That's why I moved from an LG V20 to a Pixel 3XL to a Pixel 5. But boy does this kind of pro device with such targeted hardware really make me wish I was doing a job that would benefit from its unique strengths.
Next thing I'm waiting from Sony is some sort of R version of their flagship, as they do with their Alpha cameras. I think this will complement what they're already greatly achieving. We'll just have to choose between what we want then.
@@Sabundy Sony with their Alpha 7 cameras for example, has a normal 7, an S and an R version. The standard 7 does most of things well, and then there are the other 2. The S stands for "sensitivity" if I'm correct and it's the one with the lowest resolution. On a big sensor it makes each pixel bigger. The R on the other hand is for "Resolution" (again I'm not 100% sure about that) and it's the highest MP count from the Alpha 7 range
Thank you, sir! I have been waiting for this review from you. I was only choosing between the mark III and mark IV to upgrade my LG V50. I am definitely buying this once this is released in the Philippines. Edit:y LG V50 is still holding up in the camera department. Still snappy with games too. It's just that I've already cracked the screen in the middle and I can't appreciate the beautiful images anymore.
it was over 5 years ago when I first saw periscope zoom tech in the Asus zenfone zoom. Seemed like a no brainer that it would be the future of telephoto just like how LG G5 ushered in the era of wide angle cameras on phones. It's kind of strange the periscope zoom today isn't more widespread, nice to see Sony is going with it.
Bro, I've been following & watching your videos for ages. Top Notch quality reviews & insights 👌 You should have millions of subscribers !!!! For real !!!! Watching on my Xperia 5 Mark 3, considering getting the Xperia 1 Mark 4 now in 2024, they are an absolute bargain for around 200-300 US Dollars !! I'll decide after I watch a review on the 1 Mark 5 😅 Keep up the good work 👍
Nice review. Sony keeps at least for my point of view the necessary hardware. So which one to pick 5 III, 1 IV, or pro 1? What do you think for a video/photography purpose? Thanks
Juan, awesome review, loving your style. I've been waiting for the XPERIA 1 IV but I still cant decide between that and the S22 Ultra. If it wasn't for the fact us in the UK we get palmed off with the Exynos 2200 I think I'd go Samsung. But the XPERIA 1 IV looks so slick and refined.
I was just eyeing the 1III, and was in the market for a new phone as my G8X wears down. This seems like my greatest option, unless a 5IV with Wireless charging comes around.
@@michaelcorcoran8768 yeah, but I've had buggy software issues on my G8X, and wouldn't take that chance again on a phone with no more updates. You are right though, it is a great option
Great preview. Sony have come a long way since the original Xperia 1. They are doing incremental updates where they are needed. The fact that all the imaging sensors are Exmor RS types means fast readout which is great for photography and videos. The question is would Sony dare incorporate their audio technology from their Walkman series in future Xperia models? Glad that Sony is sticking with the headphone jack, micro SD expandability, and no punch hole in the screen. This would be a nice upgrade from my Xperia 5ii (although the 5ii is still working very well). Are Sony still sticking with 2 years of updates or has that now been increased?
@@SomeGadgetGuy I think only when Sony finally decide to properly target the audiophile crowd will be see an Xperia with audio on par with their high end Walkmans. Having said that my Xperia 5ii sounds great with FLAC files. I don't own any of the high impedance headphones. The Xperia cameras/sensors have got better with each iteration. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before more attention is paid to audio. I just dread how much such a phone would cost.
I don't know if they borrowed technology from their walkmans but the output is incredibly clean with my IEMs. For my use less power but with less background noise is preferable to more output and more noise. It seems that that's what Sony engineers thought too
Sony has taken LG's spot. Quality device addressing everything the average consumer really needs. P.S: Looking forward to your V60 review after the android 12 upgrade
I was watching TechOdyssey's video on the Xperia 1 IV, and it seems to have a very bad overheating problem that many first hand reviewers never really talked about in depth. Could you test the overheating more throughly especially when shooting 4K 120?
What I like about Sony phones is the stock android, no custom UI like other Brands so there is no buggy UI. Bugs on my Sony Xperia 1 II is minimum to zero, I only dislike the auto-brightness because sometimes it is so dim that all.
What a beauty, screen is still 4k but with high refresh rate wow. It's claim 3yrs of battery life, that's true based on my experience with my xz premium, it took 4yrs to bloat the battery and just 3 days ago I replaced the battery by myself. Sony forever ♥
For photograph, they need a real Xeon flash ,variable F stop , filter fitting lens, yes a bigger useable sensor which can go along with a good range zoom 70-180mm !
They do have multiple storage phones. For example here in the UK we get shafted, the phone will only have 256gb internal memory but cost more than other countries pay for the 512gb device.
im not sure, i mean iphone have extrem good stabilization + ProRes in 4k and that give extrem much data from the sensor. It have a good night mode in photo... well the tele is the only thing but how much do you really need a tele ? i use more the nightmode
Some questions: *Does it support active stylus? *Can one enable pass through charging automatically for certain apps, like using GPS? *Does it support all the 5G technologies/WiFi 6e? *Is it a hybrid dual sim? *Which HDR playback (if any) does it support?
No active pen support I can find. You can add other apps as "games", but not all apps. I can't add camera apps for example. My unit was a prototype, so I can't comment on radio bands and carrier support, but it was a champ on my WiFi6 router.
A very sophisticated device. It's great to see what they're doing. I've learned that as much as I like the hardware I never use the specialized or should I say the more pro features. I'm looking forward to someone doing an _almost_ tutorial on this device.
I know this has nothing to do with LG but I know how much you love the V60 and wanted to know if you are having any issues after the update to android 12. I am currently using the t-mobile version of the V60, and since the OTA got to my unit I've been having software issues throughout the UI. Camera freezes, keyboard does not load, android auto disconnects constantly, slow response UI, and a bunch of other bugs that are driving me crazy. Is there anybody having the same issues after the 12 OTA t-mobile update?
17:06 - You are absolutely right and I'm glad you're completely transparent about this. This phone now seems to be targeted to an even smaller niche of consumers which I don't think I fall under. Looking forward to seeing what their 5 mark iv and 10 mark iv look like (and hoping they have proper US band compatibility)
I rarely have a problem with higher prices on consumer electronics, I think it just requires a more careful consideration of WHO might be the right fit for a specific gadget. When this is legit capable of things that no Samsung or iPhone can achieve, and comes with one of the highest tiers of storage WHILE still supporting memory cards and headphones, it's the price we pay for a PRO pro phone.
@@SomeGadgetGuy yeah Sometimes all we need is a specific checklist and if we have to pay to get it we will. If the phone does what we need it to do flawlessly then every dollar will be justified.
A small concern that Sony took out the FM Radio from within the 3.5mm jack (with wired ear buds). Only for specific situation all networks shutdown from a war event. That's just a small neurotic disaster fear kicking in.
For example, West Bengal government temporarily suspended internet services in the rural parts of Howrah district to rein in the unrest. Ukraine facing major regional internet outages as Russian invasion continues.
I love Sony phones and I love it's style but I only have one problem I can't find it in Africa. How can I be able to get hands on it? Or any Sony phone including the Xperia 1 iii
they took the pro I, cause i saw the monitor compatibility and thank sony for that and i also want the wireless charging capability as well and merge all the mark line ups.... cant wait to see the announcement
love It, I have the Xperia 1 III and Xperia 1 I, plus a XZ Premium, they all work, no headphone jack or Micro SD card no deal... Sony is my only option
Hey Juan, great video. On the photography side of things, I wish we can have, let's say, a dedicated 50mm lens on the Mark V. The leap from 24mm to 85mm feels a bit much, in my humble opinion. There has to be a middle ground focal length to fill in the blanks, so to speak. What if I don't want to shoot wide, but don't want to zoom in, either, and I want a perspective close to what my eyes saw? And no, I don't want to settle for digital zoom and sacrifice image quality in the process. Just my humble thoughts.
Really good set of information compared to the few I watched prior. None of them mentioned the music feature and that's just one of several examples, but also fair, since you couldn't demo it yet.
The things I really like about what Sony is doing with their Xperia phones 1) They are genuinely listening to the feedback from the people using their phones. 2) They are constantly improving their camera system, and from what I can see they are truly getting closer and closer to melding their Alpha cameras and Xperia phones. The photos and videos from the mark IV are looking impressive. I honestly believe that in another generation or two (mark v or vi) SONY is going to have one hell of a camera system on their phones. Not only delivering the quality but also uniquely their own with a distinct approach and experience. Despite the smear jobs by idiots like Marque Brown and his ilk SONY is IMHO doing some of the most exciting stuff right now with smartphone photography.
It's a shame more big techies don't see it, but it's such a good story right now. Sony's game is REALLY strong, and these recent moves have brought the XPERIA team back into profitability. There's room to be the king of small niche AND make money on that tier of phone. LG couldn't pull that together, but Sony is landing that REALLY well atm.
@@SomeGadgetGuy it's both frustrating and maddening imho regarding the big techies "not seeing it" because I am quite sure that in many cases it's flat out deliberate. Take for example Marquis Brown. He is not actually stupid. If anything I would argue he is deliberately disingenuous. He literally has a deal with Apple. That means he is essentially paid by them to market their products above all others. While at the same time spreading FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) about other brands products. That's a very real marketing tactic brands use against each other. And it genuinely pisses me off how dishonest so many of these big tech "reviewers" (I would argue they are really just marketers) are when it comes to certain brands, and certain products. They do such obvious smear jobs on Xperia phones (they did the same to LG phones). Fortunately though at least enough people are seeing through it, and buying Xperia phones. I for one want Sony to continue down this path because as I said I think they are getting damn close to melding an actual Alpha camera onto a smartphone.
Imagine that Sony makes a desktop experience available on the retail version of this thing. That's like way too much power than I really need but, if I had the money, I could even go and try photography and more creative work because of the number of things I could do with this phone. It's insane (and this one isn't even ready, so we're missing what the retail could get)
I use audio evolution, but it doesn't have one auto silence tool like audacity (at least i don't think it does). I just ripple cut. Mostly use it for podcasts though, so it hasn't been TOO bad compared to desktop editing.
