Sony has the better image quality, product showcase, better AF at all resolutions, more lens support, Catalyst Browse gyro stabilization, USB charging, headphone port, better battery
Sony has no noise. My M50 has brutal noise already at ISO 800, even my Sony RX100 VI has far less noise, about 4x better than the M50. Canon sensors are brutally noisy!!!
Another example of the fact that Tony is human. I guess the takaway here is, always watch your video from start to finish to make sure there are no errors before making it public.
Oh Tony, I enjoy more watching sony footages more than canon in this comparison. I mostly agreed most of your comparison but this time thumdown for this one. You are trying so hard to get canon points more than sony. You didn't even talk about all the features ZV-E10 have that canon didn't have. Sorry Tony, this review is like canon pay you.
@@DenisDamulira23 17-70 is good but for vlogging where you may be hand holding to video yourself then its easier with an ultra wide i.e. 16mm or a bit wider on apsc.
And where is the problem? The m-mount has all lenses you need. And in this price-range you can change the system on the fly without too many bucks lost.
@@rudigerbraun9103 So what do you move on to when the tech gets out of date? The M50ii was a joke of an upgrade. Canon seems to be pushing development of their RF line at the expense of their M line, which is a shame. Canon was quite active with their APS-C DSLRs, with one of the widest choices of bodies and lenses, and this led to their domination of the industry at the time. It's nice to see Canon rise in the mirrorless market but I wish they would pay as much attention to the APS-C division as well. And, no, the M mount line up is far from complete. Having the ability to adapt EF lenses to the M mount is not an excuse to stop development in that area.
I think Tony cheated the Sony with the minimal focus product focus button test. The button helps to not accidentally have your pointing finger or speaking with your hands be focused on. The choice to control that should have went to the Sony.
Sony image quality is much better, sharper- that's a huge factor! Also the sony has a low cost 16mm F2.8 pancake lens with WA attachment for wider if need be.
Great comparison! Though I feel the Sony having clean HDMI should've been mentioned & awarded a point. If you want to do any amount of streaming via capture card (and the USB webcam functionalities of neither manufacturer are a viable replacement for that), you need a clean HDMI feed. You can kind of fake it on the M50, but you lose autofocus.
For a 1080/60 inexpensive camera for RU-vid content, it’s hard to beat the M50. Even though the Sony has some better/newer features, the fact that the Canon M50 has a usable touch screen, is significantly less costly, and has better colors straight out of the camera, make it a better option for most beginner or budget content creators. I agree though, both are good, and competition makes both companies stronger and benefits us as the consumer.
I own and very often use an M50, it's really great and it just works with no fuss. I would have liked to see how the new Z fc does on this test. I find that the video coming out of my Nikon Z50 is superior to that of my Canon M50 and the Z50 face detect autofocus is as good as the Canon in video mode but the missing flip screen kills it for vlogging, the Z fc fixes that problem. The fact that the long in the tooth M50 did so well in this is a testament to how great it was when it was new!
I would lean towards sony ... canon EF-M mount future is uncertain, with sony you have an option to invest in full frame quality glass and upgrade to a full frame body later.
@@AjalaKingsGreenstream glad u agree with me. Also, EF-M's so called "uncertainty" is nothing but rumors being spread for years by rumor sites and RU-vidrs. It's silly to think the 1 selling mirrorless camera (M50) system will be cancelled any time soon.
@@vnecksurferdude7041 I do wish Canon would offer more lenses, but with 3rd party choices, it's good enough. Before I got my 22mm pancake, I used a speedbooster and 17-40 lens as my "webcam" setup.
Interesting…. I generally do the opposite (shoot 4K and deliver to clients in HD) unless I am exporting specifically for RU-vid’s compression, as you don’t actually gain a lick of perceptual resolution by upsampling from 1080 to 4K. Do you primarily do this for videos going to RU-vid? I know their 1080p compression can be notoriously bad. I’m super curious about your reasons for using this method if you don’t mind sharing.
I'm always surprised at how bad Tony can make a camera look :D But please, please, please at least remember to mention that the M50 doesn't have autofocus while in 4K. This is crucial!
One very important thing you left out is the Canons ability to fully create time-lapse video in camera, no post-editing required. When I switched to Sony full frame, I kept my M50 just for that one function.
Personally, would be choosing the Sony for zoom and streaming primarily because of the Face/Eye AF and the ability to have it powered on via a USB-C cable and no need for a dummy battery and spending $60+ on it like Canon's case. And a side note, I want to use the Zeiss Touit lenses on it.
@@stephencurah1059 And besides, Sony has no noise. My M50 has brutal noise already at ISO 800, even my Sony RX100 VI has far less noise, about 4x better than the M50. Canon sensors are brutally noisy!!!
The Z50 flip screen is poorly designed. You can't flip the screen and put it on a tripod unless you use some clumsy adapter, but then the camera becomes poorly balanced. The Nikon Zfc screen is much better.
@@어스맨 @유랑맨 WanderMan Canon FHD videos are too soft for me, it just lacks crispness..and its 4k is useless because of the bad autofocus...FHD on sony ev-10 is just plain bad, but its 4k video is crystal sharp...So i just shoot in 4k and downscale it to 1080p...Downscaling doesn't need that much computing power..So having uncrippled 4k footages is a win for me..
For me the M50 is still superior over the Sony, and I am not a fan of 4k. What is the point of shooting in 4k if most people watch RU-vid on phones. I'll stay with 1080 @ 60 fps.
As happy as I am about the M50, I have to give the Sony an extra point. Exposure settings are limited to Auto and Manual on the M50. This Canon typical limitation can even be found on the EOS R6. Among the mirrorless Canon models, only the old top model EOS R and the newer EOS R5 have aperture and time priority in video mode.
To be clear, I personally agree with Tony in his conclusion within the frame of the test. If you are in this price bracket cost is almost certainly crucial. Price and the flippy screen touch menu on their own would make this a winner. The auto focus on both is good enough and even if the Sony did win on that front the other bits are more important. He had both cameras and used them, I do not. I am not screaming bias, just observing a small loss of focus with that particular setup. You can always touch the screen and re acquire with the Canon. BTW... for context .. I have Sony A7s gear and glass but that's down to needing ultra low light 1080 video. Horses for courses.
Its kinda difficult to compare the internal mic quality. both m50 & zve-10 in my opinion dont have a good audio. M50 have high low frequency noise & zve-10 clip the high freq more .but if i need to choose i will choose m50 cause its more easier to clean the noise in post. While ZVE-10 the clipped part of the audio is more hard to deal with. Still better to put external audio for sure.
I see what you are saying to an extent. EQ characteristics aside, however, the Sony clearly had a drastically better signal to noise ratio. I think you would have a hard time finding an audio engineer who would prefer proper recorded m50 audio over proper recorded ZV-E10. I mean, you are right that neither is great, but I think it’s a bit disingenuous to pretend one is not meaningfully better than the other. Especially since camera manufacturers so rarely improve their internal mic performance generation over generation. I will say your comment about m50 cleaning being easier is just flat wrong. I pulled the samples and played with them and the Sony has far better clarity and signal/noise. A lot more latitude to work with than the m50.
2:42 Why on earth did you jump from mic connection to product showcase and give a point to Canon and then you actually did this comparison again later on in the video and said that it's a tie! Very confusing! Also the editing of the video is terrible for a big RU-vid channel like this
Sony A6400 has lot more control than these both. But still I'm not satisfied with his answer. Please watch Json Wong's review. He has mentioned a lot about this new Sony camera. It has also one click background blur option for the ppl who doesn't want to spend more money on lenses.
The one click background blur option just sets the aperture wide open (which it is usually set at anyway). It doesn't add bokeh to lenses that don't already have it.
@@TonyAndChelsea okay 👍🏽. Gotcha. Please Don't mind, I watch lot of your videos and this also was a very good comparison. But I felt at some places the Sony camera was not utilised well. Like slight tilt to the screen could have resolved the viewing issue and talking about autofocus I guess Sony are best in its class. I've same sigma lens that you used in this video with a6400. It's quick and smooth not like the Sigma 30mm.
@@thevijayraj34 the auto focus comparison did not make sense at all.. The f4 lens to be more expensive hence point to canon is even more ridiculous.. Keep your head straight.. And your confidence full.
The image quality (crispness) is what matters the most to me.. I made a big mistake buying the canon m50 mII, it's 1080p video is too soft, more like 720p to me...So i will not buy anyhing from canon unless i can afford an R5 or something..To me canon offers the worst video quality at in and around 1000$..
Tony I felt you should of done the comparison against the Canon M50 II (latest version) that includes improved auto focus and clean HDMI. Great video nonetheless!
im not going to lie, i been looking for videos like this and everyone else was to short with there video and non descriptive while you really went in depth with whats better and i really appreciate that
This video means that after three and half years this was the best Sony could do at this price range. Canon however never felt the m50 users deserved a worthy upgrade either.
You've got to have Canon fever to spend money on an ill-conceived stop-gap camera system with a lens mount inconsistent with any others in their line-up past, present or future. On the other hand, lots of amazing lens options for the e-mount.
Product presentation condition was not good Tony you are not supposed to cover your face with the product Nor bring the product closer to cover about 70% of the screen Try with a smaller product and at a normal distance
In my opinion canon is overrates in here!! Sony has clearly much vetter imaga quality and better skin tones!! Also product showcase should go for for sony not for canon. Works better 🤷. I thibk that autor prefers canon and thats why ;( so much dependsnon how fast trannsition betwen focus point u will set etc. Also lens and ninimum focal distance ...OF LESN!! NOT CAMERA. !
Canon's mic sounds way better. and your lav mic doesn t sound the part, you should have amped it up in post. i understand the general circle jerk about having bass applied to your voice, the supposed professionalism of a radio-esque amped voice, but this just ain't cutting it for me. i m a musician and producer and i understand the value of a microphone. all 3 tracks are (in this enclosed environment) potential candidates for a good sound in heavy post production. which is a ton easier than video post production. cause you apply only one "lut" to your audio, albeit very detailed and tailored.
I think the usability of the Canon is better, but I have concerns about the future of the M mount. At least you can use EF lenses with an adapter, and there are a billion of those out there!
Canon should lose a point for losing dual pixel autofocus in 4k, just saying. Sony's autofocus is almost perfect in 4k and 1080p Edit: sony also had less noise in the walk around test.
Thank you. Maybe you can help me choose- I watched r50/m50,zve10/6400, z30/50 and personally the only camera that sits great in my hands is Nikon. My goals are shooting indoor videos (interview and architecture) as well as some outdoors events. I will more luckily buy a gimbal for any of those cameras but I want to have as many stabilization as possible (in body/in lens, in software). However, Nikon is a very old brand - people online most of the time work with canon, Sony, Lumix ... I totally understand that it's a beginner choice, but I still want to make the best choice possible
🔴 *I BOUGHT ZV1 IT LAST YEAR AS SOON AS IT HIT THE MARKET - VERY BAD STABILIZATION, WEAK BATTERY, THERE IS NO TOUCHSCREEN, BECAUSE IT BLURS THE BACKGROUND, ZV1 IS NOT FOR TRAVEL VLOG. WHAT IS THE SITUATION WITH ZV E10? GOPRO 9 IS BEST FOR MY TRAVEL VLOG* 👍 💪
Sony has been making cameras for photographers since 1998, while Canon began its journey from its founding in 1937, in 1955, it became famous and became digital around 1969. It's funny that you compare this... I think it's shameful for Canon that this Sony company scares it off in the market from time to time and that it listens to its consumers about their bratty things that Canon never does, And if... they pleases it's clients it is a pure miracle because they feel great... Thank you very much Tony for your always explicit videos.
Things like bit rate and color accuracy are to me the most important factors in a superior camera. All these new cameras produce amazing images. If your in the market for cameras like these you are probably still learning your craft. Things like proper exposure , composition, lighting, and familiarity with the body should be priority. It’s not like one is shooting 12bit video. I think you will be hard pressed to find too much of a difference under most normal circumstances. I’ve used the a7iii along the m50 and the difference is there but it’s insignificant to the consumer. Especially under ideal conditions on a gimbal. Now with the bmpcc4k the difference is very noticeable. The log footage it puts out can be highly enhanced. You can literally pump the contrast ALL the way up and it looks normal.
I think there was some bias within this video. You gave a point to Canon for having a cheaper wide-angle lens. But you were comparing apples with oranges. Of course, the Sony wide-angle lens is more expensive because it's a fixed aperture. You could have just as well chosen to give the point to Sony for having the brighter wide-angle lens. Furthermore, the wide angle lens on the Canon is negated by the heavy crop in 4K. So, you gave a point to Canon for a "wide-angle" lens that isn't even wide-angle in 4K. That's ridiculous. Lastly, the heavy crop, and reduced video quality, is a HUGE difference, likely worth more than just one point, which you arbitrarily chose.
Modern cameras don’t have wireless headphones I think bc there is still a slight delay over Bluetooth so that video and sound might not sync up exactly (?)
The Sony video was clearly sharper, but the colors were absolute shite. Muddy skin tones and background. Still, Sony?! FFS how has this problem persisted since the A7.
While I would not advise anyone to upgrade from the Canon to the Sony, I would not advise any new buyer to get the Canon. Simply the M mount future is uncertain so it would not be very smart to invest in this system now in my personal opinion.
It is an important thing to think about, but I am pretty concerned that Sony isn't releasing many new lenses for the APS-C E-mount, so to me it's mostly a wash. Either they have the lenses you need right now or they don't and probably won't in the future.
@@TonyAndChelsea I think there's still a trickle of interesting, mainly low budget stuff coming out for the Sony mount from third party manufacturers, something you can't really say for the Canon M mount.
You don't mention sony display sunny mode or sony can focus on product without forcing you masking your eyes. in canon if camera see your eyes not focus on product. also sony has clean hdmi output and can use as webcam without installing any software with your usb c cable . sony not cut recording 4k video every 30 min like canon. with a usb c adapter or power bank you can record unlimited
Canon didn't do a bad job then - and over three years ago. I would have expected the new Sony to have been a lot better. As for microphones it looks like the Sony gives you the choice of one manufacturer. I would also expect the Sony to have a touch screen as good as the Canon - it hasn't.
I think Sony may be trying to offer the current EOS M users a new home with this one on the event that Canon ditches the EF-M system for RF bodies with APS-C sensors. Also, Tony I think you are having some audio issues again.
While I believe that Canon is a better standalone budget choice, the Sony is a perfect B camera (or a starter for that matter) for people who are already in the ecosystem, or plan on joining. Canon's M mount lacks any compatibility with the RF mount, unlike the EF mount which is possible through an adapter. If one were to use the M50 as a constantly adapted EF mount camera, that would still put them in an ecosystem that feels halted. That being said, I am extremely happy with my M50 and do not plan to upgrade, the used lens market is still massive and has everything I need. Sony seems to market itself as a "premium" brand among companies, at least that is what their pricing suggests. I don't need any premium fancy microphones at this price point. While the lav mic mention is great, I believe it is too expensive, and I would personally look for a more budget option if I were to be buying a lav mic for my 500-700 dollar camera.
In my opinion this wasn’t a good comparison. If anything you should’ve compared the Canon M6 MK II vs the ZV-E10 to be more reasonable. The canon I’m referring to has no crop in 4K 24 and 30 FPS and comparable lenses
For the side by side shots what lens did you have on the Sony?? And when you were walking with it what stabilization did you have on?? Thanks :) nice video!
I don't like the add up the things approach. Quantifying every item the same ignores that most users prioritize one thing over the other (e.g. 4K quality being weighed the same as outdoor viewscreen brightness)? Also very surprised at no mention of the Sony's awful rolling shutter.
@@truthseeker6804 Canon is only 1080p makes a big difference. Canon has 4k but its laughable and not good. The colour science from the new Sony is amazing. Just done a forest shoot and I agree with what people are saying. Not had to colour correct any of the clips. Bold and dynamic. I think Sony has worked hard with the colours with this camera and its been noted.
You had mentioned that the m50ii although out already at the time of this video, you did not have a sample for it. Which is fine as most features are the same for this review. However, one of the new features of the M50ii are... clean HDMI out, and although it does only have 24P at 4K, another choice still available while there are still units out there is the M6ii which has "full screen non-cropped 4K" at 30P and 24P and 120P and 60P in 1080HD. M6ii is now discontinued making way for R10. M50ii will continue to sell as it likely be less expensive than the R10 rumored around $1K for body replacing 90D and M6ii. This is a great review. Very helpful to consider when choosing. Both have good features. After watching your video, I may pickup the M6ii as it has full screen 4K at 30P while some are still around. Why? I have big FF cameras already for work. I want a small cam with small lenses like the M for walkaround.
