In this video I talk about my personal experience on head voice & flageolet and how to find it when you can't access it.

Would vocal fry or straw phonation help?

I have no personal experience with that route of apprentice, but I gained a lot of controle in my vocal fry area THANKS TO flageolet training, so it would make sense. Try to do slides, starting in your cracky fry, all the way up in a thin sound (vertical projection) and keep the sound SMALL. This triggers me as avocal coach as well , keep me up to date! 😃

​@@ChristofChapsis I think this might be an example of finding the flageolet register through vocal fry: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dwq-U6pEJUs.htmlsi=YNNalF6EirDnaMxj Y'all seem to share the same terminology (ie, distinguishing between flageolet and whistle registers), but Sterling has a very different timbre and doesn't apparently use it for his preferred style of singing (rock & metal). Personally, I think the flageolet register has a lot of potential for some interesting emotional expressions in those genres (among others) and wish more people would develop it

@@KevinFlowersJr Dear Kevin, Your comment is SPOT ON. I already saw the video of Sterling, and I can tell you, making me kinda 100% agree to someone in a 19:12m video is well... kinda rare or non existant. Two things, and you mentioned them both: 1) I have a musical theatre voice and background (however I'm working on my "growl" lately, but that's faaaar from applicable haha) and he is definitely a rock, metal, punky, whatever you want to call him, he's a great singer, with a lot of CORRECT knowledge and a splendid coach. That's also maybe the reason for the second thing: 2) I focus not only on finding the flageolet registration, but also on building it up, eventually mixing it with head voice, and that's where vocal fry gets out of the picture, since yeah, these slides are, and I'm grateful I keep on learning new stuff, VERYYYYY useful to discover the flageolet voice (keep it exhaled, otherwise you go to whistle, which could lead to the conclusion that also the "vocal fry" is such an underrated register) Let me ask you, you can be honest and give me critique, kinda what Sterling R Jackson is saying is : "Try to do slides, starting in your cracky fry, all the way up in a thin sound (vertical projection) and keep the sound SMALL." I had another question what would u describe the feeling is it kinda like feeling almost nothing or like squeaky or slightly tense? I think I've found it because I can move up and down scales with it and it is really relaxed but it's kinda shaky?? But it's not uncomfortable unless I do more then a couple minutes?

This tutorial and guide is a handy refresher of what you've taught me. From listening to lots of other RU-vid videos, I'm convinced a lot of other coaches need to give this video a careful listen.

My Flageolet just reached A6 for the first time but it hurt my throat

Dear Singer, Hitting a A6 in flageolet could be the signal of an amazing potential. Of course, without an audible example, it's hard for me to tell. My neck keeps getting tense and my throat hurts when I try. 3:16 is what keeps happening 😭 plus, when I try to go quiet, sound doesn’t want to come out at all. I wish it would just happen already

Well, the word "patience" is always involved when flageolet passes by. It needs the EXACT amount of airflow otherwise you get no sound, cracks, yells , tension etc. Don't give up!

I have the same voice type as you, however, my high notes are breathy and weak. Am I correct in thinking flageolet will help close the back of the vocal cords up on high notes ? Thank you for the video!

Hello dear singer, I'll try to answer with the information you gave. Flageolet is without a doubt beneficial for other registers, but what could be the problem here is that you start taking head voice/flageolet mechanisms too early/too low. Of course you also need some mass coming from the "other side", your chords at thicker length. I THINK you should work on strenghtening your low register in combination with your current exercice scheme. Slowly those two ends will come together, which will create a well developed mixed area for strong, powerfull high notes in the upper register (a bit different depending on the voice nature reserved for you). Be aware of what you are training during your practice.

Sir.. when I am inhaling.. I can reach upto D6 or even more.. but when I am exhaling..reaching on G5 becoming very hard.. 😭😭😭😭

Dear singer, Don't take this comment too harsh, that's just because it is typed text. You should pay A LOT of attention in this video between 1:00 - 3:00. And I mean REALLY A LOT. Of course you get higher by inhaled phonation. That's your whistle register and not your flageolet. Whistle register is much easier to find and on a lucky day you can get up to the 7th or 8th octave in it... but it's a waste of time in my opinion unless you gained controle over ALL other aspects of your vocal instrument and you don't know what else to train anymore (Joke Disclaimer: I think Dimash was already bored at his 17th or so about like every thinkable register so he could just play a bit with his whistle register, cause that was all that there was left for him already 😂) I would advise you to STOP for a while with that inhaled exercices and focus everyday on flageolet. I would love to sugarcoat my answer more but I just can't... This is the wall you keep on crashing on. But never lose the joy of singing. Never give up my friend! Christof
