Fast forward to Alec Baldwin GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS - "know what it takes to sell real estate? It takes brass balls". See, it's all about the ability to sell it in life.
@@ronoccc symbolized the Aprile crew was making their move. Winning over Junior was paramount because they also felt Junior and Tony had a similar rivalry. Of course, Junior had to choose between his Nephew who's running the show from under him, and the Aprile's who kinda stole his thunder when Jackie took over.
@Thomas Fiese seriously. No honor amongst thieves. One minute he’s conspiring with the poor bastard, the next day he’s throwing him over a bridge like Mikey Palmice threw the tweaker over.
Everyone in the Soprano crime family knew Jackie Jr was just a pup trying to play with the big dogs. The only people to flatter him was his uncle, Ralph, and his friend who got shot in the face by Chris.
Seeing Ritchie take Jackie Jr along on something this high up, I'm not ashamed to say it my estimation of him as a man just plummeted, if he is that stupid then what else might he do.
Take him along on a trash route bidding when he has nothing to do with it and he's not even made. That was a pretty stupid move. No wonder Tony never liked the kid.
I meam tbf wasnt it that he really needed to piss but didnt wanna not be at the wheel so stuck there and pisses himself out of commitment? Either way man guy was obvs not made for the life
That’s not what he meant. He meant even though Ritchie is fearless, if he dies Junior couldn’t even wear his shoes, ie a dead ally doesn’t give you anything.
Junior wasn't incompetent. Tony was often asking him for advice. He was just disrespected, behind the times and marred by insecurity. As for why he was disrespected, I have no idea. Maybe it was because of his kid brother's shadow. He was made before Junior and was apparently old man DeMeo's second in command in the whole pygmy thing. Junior was behind him as long as he was alive. He was just kind of obsolete and too keen of the title and (feigned) respect to be a boss. He was easily manipulated by appealing to this need for validation. But he knew the mob business. He worked better as advisor or number two.
A old street savvy gangster like him would thrive as Consigliere but as boss no way he’s too much with his self doubt and any gossip ruins him. If he had total control over the family he would of had everyone clipped for talking about him or even if he thinks your going to talk about him your a dead man
@@JL-rx7ou I don't think it was the gossip, even tony had to kill gossipers including pat parisi's brother. He wasn't respected because junior is a small man. He had to be boss, he had to look good on the sketch, he had to keep the cunnilingus a secret, and I think he didn't betray tony to the feds because of omerta, it was because he couldn't accept that tony is the real boss, the little respect he has is because he was og.
@@bobobandy9382 actually he's supposed to be dumb and weak minded, that's how the character is meant to be. that's why his father and Tony tried to keep him out of this. I think he's meant to be annoying, annoys the shit out of me too.
I love how Junior considers his position and says “I’m better off with Tony.” Then, he sells it to Tony that he was considering his wife, kids, and them being close for years when selling Richie out.
It just cracks me up how well it was done from a ward-robe standpoint... Richie was in prison for 10 years & when he got out, he still dressed like a 1980's gangster. Played out shirts & I think in a few episodes, he even wore a 'Members Only' coat. Pretty brilliant..
“Fucking loser, he couldn’t sell it”. Is one of the best lines of the whole series. Just when you think it’s going one way, the expert writers take it the other way. And this is one of Chianese’s finest scenes.
0:45 I love moments like this.. the moment Jackie starts talking Ritchie's face drops as he knows Junior's criticism is coming. These gangsters were children on the schoolyard.
Jackie Jr: "I'd do him myself!" yeah whatever, you couldn't squash a bug. Jackie jr. ranked just above AJ in terms of all-time clueless idiots on the show.
At least AJ stayed in his lane. He was your average teenager unlike that name-dropping wannabe Jackie Jr. The biggest fuck-ups in the show were Christopher and his female counterpart in terms of cluelessness and fucking up. Paulie was a fuck-up but he had his upsides being one tough sob
I think Jackie Jr should of just went into trade school and learn welding or something. He wasn't college material, wasn't gangster material, he was just a working class jack off like the majority of us.
Folks saying the writers were careless in letting Jackie Jr accompany Richie to this meeting might be forgetting that the writers nailed everything with this show. This scene wasn’t the writers’ carelessness, it was their foreshadowing of how Richie’s own carelessness would bring him down. Richie’s constant inability to rationalize things properly (and in the process dispensing with some of the mafia’s norms) would continue getting him in jams. That’s apparent from his bringing Jackie Junior - perhaps an associate at this point and albeit the son of the former boss - who was not a made guy to this discussion of a potential coup against the current boss of the family. Richie’s carelessness and Junior’s hold over Richie by not specifically calling out Richie’s faults (like other folks do) is in full display as Junior dismisses Jackie Junior the moment he speaks but doesn’t tell Richie that he messed up by bringing JJ. Unlike Richie, from just receiving a brief recap of the captains’ feedback to the potential coup, Junior immediately assesses the landscape - the other captains not going along with Richie wasn’t out of fear but stemmed from their lack of respect for him. Those other captains were willing to follow Tony, a hot headed selfish guy who for all his faults still believed in la costa nostra. Richie’s carelessness didn’t allow him to read those cues and Junior, once again maintaining his hold over Richie, takes a patriarchal stance (“You’re a good boy Richie”) but doesnt say a word or school Richie about his folly. Junior sends Richie home without providing any insight. That lack of insight and the constant failure to read the cues plague Richie right until his demise in a situation where he once again, failed to read the cues and acted carelessly; taunting an angry and hysterical gun-toting Janice.
I gotta say the sopranos, is still one of the best series I have watched ever... the depth of acting talent in that show was incredible... every character was portrayed so well...
@@jappiejojo777 respect your opinion... I actuallly thought Jackie Jnr showed incompetence and weakness quite well.. the actor showed he wasnt the authority figure his father was... Agree though he wasnt a seasoned pro like all the other cast...
+Caligae Richie Aprile was trying to rally support amongst the capos to take Tony out. Recently in terms of that season, Tony ruled against Larry Barese's favor in a garbage contract and tried to use that to convince Barese that Tony was being an unfair boss and should be taken out. However, both Albert and Larry declined to support Richie's move, which sent Junior the message that Richie wasn't persuasive or respected enough to take Tony's place as boss, so he decided that Richie was overall useless and let Tony know Richie's plans. However, if Albert was okay with Richie taking Tony out, Junior would have gone with Richie sending the message to Junior that the capos would rather have another boss. This whole situation was some masterful mind games in Junior's part.
I always thought it was weird Richie took Jackie Jr. along with him to this meeting. He wasn't even an associate, but was allowed to hear about a plot against the boss of the family? I think that's pretty careless. Also it's funny how Richie spurned his son for being a dancer/possibly gay, but said he would be proud of a son like JJ. JJ was a pathetic gangster wannabe who tried to leech out his father's legacy. His sister said it best at his funeral.
That is a Great Post ....outstanding ! The writers are so far off on this ...u are going to take out a 'top guy' and a 21yr old wannabe is in the fucking room ...there is no way that would happen. Even jun says 'whos speaking ....' why have the asshole in the room to tell people like his pals and the word gets back to Tony ..no way this would happen !
Damn. Bobby took the words right out of my mouth at the end there. Junior is super crafty and thinks things through well. Richie couldn’t convince anyone to join him. That’s not a good sign lol
Jaegar Ultima tru although he never said it maybe he WANTED to groom Jackie Jr i mean at that point who was left to represent the Aprile name but those two? Plus its just one more thing that Richie could be against Tony about. Had richie lived longed and got ally boys approval? Tony would have been wiped off da map and Jackie jr most likely would move up in the game shiiit maybe even Richie’s own chrissy moltisanti in a few years ahhaha
i fucking love the look on Junior's face when bobby says "im in awe of you". Uncle Junior was my favourite character on the show, hands down. Such great comic timing.
Hmmm I’d say it was 50/50 it was love for Tony but also a business decision….lets not ignore HAD Richie got others on board to turn on Tony Junior wouldnt have hesitated to part take in that, but because Richie failed to convince others to do so, Junior knew he was best off with Tony. It’s honestly messed up, I’m not denying Junior loved Tony. But deep down Junior wanted Tony out, it was just easier said than done
LOL at the way Junior looks at Richie at 0:45 right after Richie says he can have Larry Barese whacked in prison. Junior is like, "Yea, right, who the fuck are you kidding?"
"Can't even wear his shoes" lmfao. Junior was one crazy old dude. Love him. Liked how he readdressed it as "we" as I think he thought of Bobby as a son.
"We best off with?" I love how Junior is looking out for Bobby as his right hand man. He helps to have the muscle, but after a while, it seemed that Junior gave a damn about Bobby.
20 years ago when I first watched this show, I had no respect for Junior and thought he was pointless, probably how he got played in Season1 by Tony into believing he was the boss. Rewatching now, I see him as one of the smartest players in the game
"Who's that speaking here ? Is somebody speaking ? " LOL I love Junior . Low key best character on the show. I love all of his intrigues and machinations . The writers should have been pistol whipped for making him go senile. SMH
This show was groundbreaking. Talk about paving the way for so many others shows that followed. Without the sopranos and its brilliant anti villain character a lot of the hit shows that came afterwards would cease to exist. Like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Dexter, Ozark, Better Call Saul, House of Cards, etc.
That is what is great about the show. A lot of it is between the lines. You have to read the expressions the actors give and the subtext to their decisions and motives. A weaker show would have spell it out for someone by having Bobby confess his regrets to a priest or ask Tony not to. But the Sopranos is one of the only shows that trusts in it's audiences intelligence.
It just cracks me up how well it was done from a wardrobe standpoint... Richie was in prison for 10 years and when he got out he still dressed like an 80's gangster... Played out shirts and I think in a few episodes he even wore a "members only" coat... pretty brilliant..
Junior hasn't completely lost the plot at this stage, and knows that if Tony is disappeared by Richie, then Junior's own life would become considerably more dangerous than the "honoured retirement" he currently enjoys.Probably never had any intention of backing Richie, but very craftily encourages him to sound out potential support.I like the reference to Joe Profaci, a mob master strategist of the old school, and long term boss of the Brooklyn Family.
