The Sopranos - Ralph Reaches Out To Johnny Sack

Ralph beat a stripper to death which caused Tony to lash out and hit Ralph, a violation of mafia code. Tony tried to settle things by offering to have a drink with Ralph and bury the hatchet, which Ralph denied.
In this scene, Ralph reaches out to Johnny Sack for help. We also see Johnny Sack working behind the scenes to smooth things over for the betterment of business.

@Zachary Jacobson Johnny Sack was an old school Cosa Nostra mobster, and in the old days, if you would have really publicly joked about the weight of the morbidly obese wife of an underboss, especially an underboss of a Five Families' family, you would have ended up buried in a concrete pillar in a matter of days.

@ProtomanButCallMeBlues
@ProtomanButCallMeBlues 3 года назад
None of them did, they never considered people outside their thing as equals. Only Tony ever cared about what happened to Tracee, but that's because he was a bit of a self righteous hypocrite who thought he was above them albeit with a small ounce of humanity. The other mobsters only got angry at Ralph for turning down Tony's drink.

Yeah but in their morality and code her raising her hands to him is a death sentence alone , she woulda been whacked either way if it was the 40s-60s maybe even later but for sure in that period especially as she wasn't connected
@ProtomanButCallMeBlues
@ProtomanButCallMeBlues 2 года назад
@@driplerthadripper That's why the audience rallied behind Tony. Not because Tony was right under his own rules, but because under that little ounce of humanity he shows his family and animals extended to the victim of a horrific murder, despite the obvious hypocrisy like how Tony would murder jackie jr or matt bevilaqua (arguably both more deserving of death) it never bothered Tony, yet he looked down on his own guys for doing the same. HIs hypocrisy with how Ralphie went too far is something he ended up pointing out before he died, Tony wanted to be the hero, but that's because his ego needed that to cope with his self-loathing.
@bidhrohi12
@bidhrohi12 3 года назад
Johnny Sack is devoted to his wife and loves her unconditionally, but is apathetic about Ralph beating an innocent young woman to death. Tony cheats on his wife without giving her honor a moment's thought, but is willing to take personal damage to stand by his anger towards the wrong done to that girl. Interesting difference in moral formula for both these guys.
@chubbychaser00izu
@chubbychaser00izu 3 года назад
It goes a bit deeper than that because Johnny never even met the stripper whereas Tony was giving her advice from time to time and he felt she was looking up to him like a child looks up to a parent. Tony has a thing for living beings who cannot defend themselves. Johnny on the other hand just saw her as a random stripper. Hence the different reactions. Obviously how they treat their wives, that's a different thing to me.

I like how Johnny makes Ralph think that Carmine has no idea about Ralph so that he doesn't go directly to Carmine for anything. We found out later that Carmine recognized Ralph for the powerful earner that he was. He effectively made himself the shoulder to cry on for all the disgruntled members of Tony's captains/higher ups. He put himself in a position to know about all the internal issues with the NJ family.
@ProtomanButCallMeBlues
@ProtomanButCallMeBlues 3 года назад
How Johnny uses people of course. The Irony of it is he got Paulie under this thumb by telling him Carmine was impressed by him. While he's wrangling Ralph here because he sees Johnny as his only way to escape the Soprano crew, but he doesn't know that he might've had substantial pull with Carmine if he had talked to him directly.

Johnny *was* prior to the Ginny stuff. After that his character did a huge 180 and started making rash judgements based on personal grudges which was completely out of character IMO and one of the few times I thought The Sopranos writing was iffy. Like the other commenter said, Carmine Sr. was truly the best mobster in the show. Smart, tactical, and kept any personal feelings completely out of it. For him and only him it truly was just business.

The writing for the show was at such an incredibly high level. Even though these are a bunch of criminals, there is still so much to relate to. When frustrations are high, and people have private conversations, and then relay the conversations to other affected parties, it is so very human that humans shade the descriptions of what was said to further their own purposes. Brilliant writing.

Not only that, we know that Carmine wants Ralph in the business. What Johnny Sack did here was put Ralp in debt to NY, have control over the shared projects and get Tony to not even suspecting the whole manipulation (He told Tony that Ralph wanted to compromise, told Ralph Tony wants want too and suddenly both want to compromise on the terms that fit Johnny). It shows that the smart mobsters do read "The Prince" and learn.

this show is a great example of how life is. nobody says what they truly mean and quite frankly these unwritten rules of how society is and how we should behave is pretty sad to me. we have the ability to communicate but we cannot speak our minds in most cases

I have found that speaking your mind does no good anyway, most people are mindless robots and will just stare at you like an idiot if you talk to them with any kind of knowledge or insight.

Truth is, there are no rules. Never have been. So why put so much stock in it? Every manmade institution is just that-manmade. In the real physical world, a $500 bill is worth almost nothing compared to a bologna sandwich. We should all start standing up for what we really believe. The pain and embarrassment would be temporary, the positive change in the world would be permanent. Now go home and get your fuckin shinebox.

We can't speak our minds cause we are all different... so we all have different minds that don't see alike... so we have to find something that we can agree on... which aint much...

Some of the best actors come late to the stage. Curatola managed this character like an old master. He played it exactly the way he auditioned it - quietly, but with an often terrifying, sinister ferocity. “We’re done here.”
