Revel bikes, the same company that brought you the Rascal and Rail have just released a new form of mountain bike wheels. Introducing...the Fusion-Fiber RW30 rims! They are not aluminum, not carbon fiber, think of it as more advanced nylon but on an entirely new level. Even better, this new Revel wheelset is 100% recyclable and completely made in the USA. The material they are made of isn't the only amazing thing about them, the MTB wheels were developed in one of the world's leading aerospace facilities using robots. Yes, that's right, these wheels are made by machines! Sure, all of this sounds incredible, but how do they ride? Although we only have a few weeks on them, Jeff and Liam are here to share their first impressions. Let's check it out!

can't wait for a nylon based frame. Id be interested as well in a team up with someone like arbor who uses a bio based resin for their snowboards, although I don't know the difference between resin and epoxy, especially in terms of strength
@MaplePanda04
@MaplePanda04 4 года назад
Epoxy is a type of resin. It all just describes the “glue” they are using to hold the fibres together.
@MacGyverDad
@MacGyverDad 3 года назад
Bio resin is only marginally better than standard epoxies in terms of being “green” but it’s a step in a positive direction. With high performance epoxy resins, the hardener is still corrosive and considered hazardous, and the resin side usually is a blend of bio and petrochemical raw materials. There are less hazardous bio epoxies for art pieces and table top coatings, but they are not making bike parts from it because the physical properties suck. And yes, I work in the industry.

This actually makes a lot of sense material-wise for performance as well. The nylon I think is a bit more compliant than the epoxy that would usually bond the carbon and less likely to crack on impacts. Pedals are made from nylon and lots of things made from fibre-reinforced nylons that are intended for hard abuse. Seems like it was a no brainer to try it out on wheels

"recyclability" on the face of it is a red herring. as an example, most (all?) plastic is recyclable, but some kinds aren't exactly easy to recycle and so waste plastics of those kinds end up going to collection centers, being made into big cubes of plastic refuse, and then sent off to wherever they can be dumped. not to mention that any recycling process can itself produce pollution, and may even fail to be able to reclaim most of the material that is recycled. i'd like to know where one of these wheels can be taken /right now/ to be recycled, what the side-effects are, and how much of each wheel actually gets recycled, grams in vs. grams out.

I would like the price to come down. I read the blog and I appreciate that they can recycle the rim but it also states that they cut the time down significantly without any finish work. Labor is way less and they use robots. The manufacturer is in no way solely dependent on making rims for Revel so why are they priced so high? I understand R&D but man $1400 for 2 rims seems steep. I guess it’s the economy of scale thingy. I just want carbon rims but man are they expensive. Thanks for your videos you guys do a great job.

Question, how is the rim recycled if it was damaged to the point of being un-ride-able? Does Revel fix those rims with their new tech or does the undamaged parts of the Carbon be reused in other parts in the future? EDIT: read the blog and it said this "If a rim is broken, Revel will send out a loaner rim while you ship your wheel back, it gets rebuilt and then you get the rebuilt wheel back for more riding and abuse. Then that broken rim is recycled and repurposed." So does this mean they take out the broken part or "fragments" and put in new ones or a new wheel is sent?
