I always play Mitsu like someone would play Kazuya; defensively, whiff punishing with his sidestep B, occasionally go in with a strong but risky mixup, using the buffed Mist stance in future games, and using his strong throws.
im a kaz player in tekken, and i instantly gravitated to mitsu for this reason. he's really good at capitalizing on an opponents mistakes. I actually kinda disagree with aris when he says nightmare vs mitsu is a bad matchup for mitsu; that may be the case with legit good nightmare players, but all the one's I know are unga as fuck, and I make quick work of them with my patient play.
SCII Mitsurugi was an absolute beast of a character. It’s telling how he was steadily nerfed in each subsequent entry after this one. The dude was THE perfect balance of speed, power, agility, and mix-up game. Easy to pick up, and a top-tier character when mastered.
I think you’re selling the Relic and Mist stances short, man. The Relic stance is a good defensive option because its B move has a sidestep and is a great punish against more aggressive characters like Voldo and Kilik, and getting the timing down for the A+B+K parry gives you a good comeback option if your opponent’s in the lead. The Mist stance is a good offensive option because it’s a great mixup option and its A+B is a solid leadoff attack if you’re having to play more aggressive because it of its GI frames against mid attacks that guarantees a launch if it connects, allowing you to immediately followup with an A+B juggle for extra damage as well as a down-A+B wakeup when they land. Additionally, Mist’s AB mixup is a solid option as well as its K/throw canceling for guarding opponents(though its lack of a good followup is a bit of an issue). The stances are what allows Mitsurugi to really shine against characters that outmatch him in a particular category: Mist’s aggression gives him rushdown options against slower, more powerful characters like Nightmare and Astaroth, and Relic’s defensiveness gives him turtling options against faster characters like Taki and Xianghua. Relic, especially, is one reason why taking Mitsurugi against faster characters is viable and that, I think, is the reason why Namco nerfed him so hard by removing it in Soul Calibur 5. Edit: Yeah, all mids, not just high Bs like I first thought.
really well put, I have a very very remedial understanding of soul cal 2, But I only ever played mitsu and always thought his stances were what made him a cut above other characters for me
i emulate the game and k is the kick button, g is the giard button, b is vertical cut and a is horizotal cut. the comand list in the help section has it all there. And i main mitsurugi and he is, in my opinion, a very versital because you can play hard core defence using the the stances, offence with his impaling attacks and grabs along with the kicks because his kicks are wonderful. but like you said he requires precison timing.
So here’s my issue with you thinking Mitsurugi matches up badly against Nightmare. Yeah, Nightmare’s range and power is a problem for Mitsurugi and his punish game is second to none in SC2. But he’s still on the slow side outside of his stance mixups and that’s where Mitsurugi has the advantage(not sure where you’re getting that Nightmare’s faster than Mitsurugi; Nightmare’s the second-slowest character in the game when he’s not using his stance mixups). Mitsurugi can’t out-power Nightmare, but he can certainly beat Nightmare with his agility. This is why I think Mitsurugi is the best character in the game(outside of Xianghua): He has an answer for whatever his opponent beats him in. Can’t overpower Nightmare’s devastating Bs? He can 8-way run and punish Nightmare’s whiffs while rushing him down with Mist’s mixup options. Can’t beat Xianghua’s speed and mixup game? He’s got solid defensive options with good A punishes, superior range, and Relic. Can’t beat Ivy’s range game? He can answer by closing with her and rushing her down. Mitsurugi is the only character in the game who has an answer whenever he’s outclassed in a particular way, which is why he’s at his best in this game.
@@ROYBGP Nightmare’s deceptively-fast, for sure, and that can catch an inexperienced Mitsurugi off-guard due to Mitsu’s lack of a good poke against Nightmare’s huge Bs, but he’s got other options outside of poking to beat them. It’s definitely a good point that Mitsurugi’s other options are higher-risk, though; I just don’t think that, alone, makes Mitsurugi worse than Nightmare. The best ways, I’ve found, to beat Nightmare as Mitsurugi is to use Mitsu’s superior speed to sidestep and punish the whiff with a good throw or something like that. Does that mean I have to close with Nightmare and thus have no safety from a followup? Sure, but that’s the risk one has to take.
@@JJR221 No, I’m not lying. Mitsurugi’s got options for every other character in the game, even Xianghua. Mist gives him a powerful rushdown game for characters that are more powerful than him, Relic gives him turtling options against characters that are faster than him, and so on. Only other character that, IMO, outright outclasses him is Xianghua and that’s because she’s just as well-rounded as he is but has a far better poking and recovery game than he does, and those are, admittedly, the only areas where Mitsurugi can have real trouble. So yeah, a Nightmare player with a good spacing game could probably beat down Mitsurugi, but a good Mitsurugi player knows the best ways to weave inside Nightmare’s bubble and pummel him with his rushdown options. As I’ve already said, that can leave Mitsurugi open to followups from Nightmare, but that’s the risk you gotta take to be effective with him.
+FGC meatw4d Hell yeah! Vader and Apprentice were so boss. I really hope that Nanci makes new characters out of their movements minus the force powers of course. Vader could be some sort of Bastard sword wielding knight and Apprentice could be the new Assassin
Mitsurugi’s 6K is alright for pokes when you and your opponent are in 8-way run, in my experience. It’s also alright for counter hits because you can punish with a ringout, but that’s about it.
Bg Bg until you've trained them to block or GI, then throw. If they don't block (or if they duck) you can just B, if they sidestep you can A A until they do block or duck. I watched someone do this to the computer in front of me at the arcades and I STILL fell for it.
Agreed on Mitsurugi’s While Standings being rather weak. Means that getting knocked down as Mitsurugi is a bad situation because your only real option is to roll or use a single good move. I’d say his While Standing AA is okay, at least, but it’s not as good as, say, Nightmare’s While Standing AA.
@ 4:22 i play 4 characters. Ivy, Nightmare, Taki, Link. And i plan on learning Chai-Xianghua soon. I have old videos i re-uploaded of my Ivy and Nightmare but those are years old, i'm much better now. And i also have a Taki now. Gona upload new vids soon enough. Also i discovered a glitch with Taki. I hope you stay tuned for these vids. :3
Soul Calibur 2 is the best played soul Calibur of all time.....the moves does connect more better than all the rest...that came out after it....and it is time for a soul Calibur tag tournament.....all other fighting game is going tag tournament....so it is time for soul Calibur to make that change.

my tutorial of mitsurugi: play special vs and use damascus sword. you can't guard but you are so buffed in attack and defense that you can kill in 3-5 hits. done
Wish They could have Kept these Realistic Moves in His Commandes List for Heishiroe Mitsurugi to Come Back with Him from the 1st 2ed 3rd and 4th Soul Calibur Games that's Realistic not the Lame Ones off of the 5th and 6th Title!
Why because the game developers can't get mitsurugi moves properly to stand against nightmare and some of the other cheap and over powered characters.....they are always focusing on making nightmare and the others over powerful and cheap and leaving mitsurugi with stupid moves that hardly ring outs and not enough speed and power.
Don’t sell Mitsu too short. His lack of poke options against Nightmare are a problem, but he’s got other options for handling the guy, they’re just higher risk, as was pointed out in the video.
