In our previous video, we showed our copper maran hen who had was inflicted by sour crop. We discussed the treatment methods and demonstrated a regurgitation.
This is an update video on her progress as well as a video discussing viewer questions. We received a lot of questions in regards to sour crop in our previous video so I am addressing the questions.

Wow! That has been a wonderful journey! I've just finished watching all your videos from the beginning after I "met" you through the Rhodes on their Great American Farm Tour. I especially liked the documentary Justin did on you, Dan, and your honesty and vulnerability in it. I decided to check you out and was soon hooked. Sometimes I have wanted to comment but as I don't know how often you go back to view comments, I decided to keep all mine till I had viewed all of the videos. That makes for a rather long comment now. You've been on a steep learning curve and have done an amazing amount in a little over a year. Around day 50 you were bemoaning the fact that you had done so little. I nearly fell off my chair. From my point of view, you had done so much! And you have continued to learn, practice, become efficient, taking opportunities wherever they presented themselves. Talk about seizing the day! Ashley, too, pitches into things as she has the time. And little Buddy is learning so much, helping where he can. Bravo! Although I enjoy eating lamb and pork, I have no interest whatsoever in raising sheep or pigs myself. Yet I watched every sheep and pig video because they were all so interesting. (Tess is phenomenal!) Really, you give valuable, easy to watch information in almost all of your videos. (I even sat through your first live stream.) Also, I read the comments on every video and learned a lot from the community of like-minded people you have built in person and through your youtube channel. They also, have sent me on interesting side excursions as I check out links they have provided. I find you and the people who watch and comment to be kind, caring, wise and often funny. So many excellent suggestions, so much kindly encouragement, such heartfelt words about your family. You are kind, respectful and helpful towards other humans - the varied farmers and trade people you visit, your delightful family members, your commenters, even those you don't agree with like the butcher and the neighbours who spray their fields. I really like the way you treat your animals with respect and with a view to their health and well-being which in the end is for your own health. I like your openness and vulnerability in sharing both successes and failures. I am inspired by your gumption in doing something so different from what you've always done before and your willingness to learn. For some time now, I've wanted chickens in my city garden. One thing holding me up was my carpentry skills. You have inspired me to get going even if my skill level is very low. And I've learned things about raising chickens, too. Thank you. Other thoughts: Love your chicken interludes; enjoy the way you stop to see and record the beauty around you; really respect your commitment to high standards; any/all your hats were fine with me! Martha

thank you for the wonderful comment. It made my day :) Thank you for taking the time to watch our older videos. It helps give full context of how we arrived where we are now and why we do things a certain way. And I agree about our commenters. Most are very supportive and really want to help us succeed. I'm glad to count you among them now, Martha. :)

Yay! Glad to be of help ;-) At farm and feed places (I get mine from North 40), you can get 50-lb bags of grit (and oyster shell) for MUCH cheaper than the Purina brand. I like the idea of the adding it into their food. A little goes a long way, they don't seem to need much. And, as their manure decomposes, they'll find the grit that passes through, and so it's never really wasted.

I am freaking dying laughing here. Hubby and I watch that video the other day and both of us were eating dinner at the time so it was quite the experience. Of course seeing the clip of the video made him absolutely gag and I laughed. Thanks so much! Glad your chickens are doing better.

Oh man I just realized that's probably why a few of my chickens have! Will that makes their egg production go down? Because I have 11 chickens and only getting 3-4 eggs a day

Nice to see LB, Penny and the sheep. Glad the chickens are better. Ashley seems to really like and care for y all's chickens. I just have 2 chickens and I recently tried fermented feed for about a week. My barred rock and easter egger seemed to prefer their pellets over fermented feed and I think it gave them diarrhea (I saw poop sliding off the coop wall and that was an unpleasant first). So, no more fermented feed for my girls. Maybe I wasn't doing it right?
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
It's best to introduce it to them incrementally. If you switched them over to fermented feed completely in one shot it could have some adverse effects

I had a hen have that and didn't realize it til now. Her crop was as big as my fist and hard. I thought she just ate faster than anyone else so she got more. She resolved it herself and I still have her but now I know.

The Grass-fed Homestead I assume that's what she had after watching the video. I feed whole corn to my birds and like you I can't soak the feed in winter. She was like that probably three or four days and then one morning it was gone and she's been fine since. I could be wrong and maybe she didn't have it. Every night I check their crops when I shut them in. Once they are on the roost they won't move so it takes less than a minute.

I have had a two chickens that got sour crop. I am not sure what caused the problem in the first chicken but the second one had eaten a hard object that blocked her crop. I had to massage her two to three times a day and push the object up out of the opening at the bottom of the crop then food would move through the crop until the object would block the crop again. If I did not keep up the treatment the crop would sour. She would eat rocks like crazy trying to break down the unknown object on her own. It took at least three months before it got small enough to pass through the digestives system. I tried to get it out I even used a long pair of forceps that I could feel it with but it would not come out. The only problem was she developed the bad habit of eating rocks for the rest or her life. Her crop would be full of small rocks. Her dropping would be a pile of pebbles. Has anyone else had this experience with chickens eating something that blocked the crop.

Hi guys, just a question. I know nothing about sheep they seem so tame and gentle. Are they usually, or is it just your care for them that makes them so calm. Also, what are the usual times of year that you would shear them? tyfs Pat
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
A lot of sheep are not that calm and friendly. It's because we spend a lot of time with them that they are like that. Shearing is usually done in the spring before lambing

A lady by the name of Cynthia Fuller has a video on fermented feed and how it leads to sour crop. She goes into detail as to the lab test results that confirm that chickens dying because of it. She has an extensive background with all things chicken. Might check out her channel. She did say soaked feed is ok, but really an unnecessary addition to feeding routine.
@jennifermccully3153

I ferment my chicken's feed and they have been SO healthy. I've not have one chicken ill-effected from it. HOWEVER, that being said, I did learn in the earlier stages of my starting to ferment feed that I was doing it improperly, not keeping the grains fully-submerged under water as the grain expanded and soaked in the water. The first few weeks I was feeding my chickens food that had started to grow botulism-type fungus (dark, off-smelling fungus) on top of the grain that was not submerged. Once I'd found my error I quickly changed it and was thankfully able to avoid any adverse or lethal effects. Botulism live on the surface of a drier environment, and can not live well in very wet environments, hence the reason for keeping any fermenting food fully-submerged.

I have a question. You say "sour crop". Shouldn't it be pronounced sour craw? the craw (spelled CROP) is where the food gets sour.

Mar Barnes They're the same word different pronunciations. Either is acceptable. Older generations usually use craw.
