My mother saw John Philip Sousa perform in St Louis as a child, in his band's last tour of the United States. I wonder if she was aware at the time she was viewing what would become history.

Amazing how all these John Phillip Sousa Marches are heard in so many films and television shows! We all hear them and think wow, that sounds familiar. I remember playing the Washington Post March and Semper Fidelis in music class in Grade nine. As a Canadian, it kind of struck me as strange to be playing marches written by an American composer, but after many years of reflection, I can attest that Sousa was indeed, "The March King"

It knocks me out. Sousa is recognized as The March King. But that really minimizes what a musical genius he was! As a composer, he is without peer; his melodies take such unusual turns, but they still sound organic and "natural". His mastery of the craft of arranging is beyond the beyond! His voice leading for all the instruments is so precise, so exciting, they create the perfect bed for the melody to ride on! It truly stirs the emotions of the listener. Sousa is WAY underrated as a composer. He was a true master.

+Ariana Culbreth In high school, our marching band played this as our parade march in band competitions. I played piccolo, and the flute and piccolo parts are really fun, as they are in most Sousa marches. You can really let it rip. Great memories of my days as a proud band nerd: the week of band camp up in the Sierras right before school started, playing field shows at all the football games, and the immense fun of traveling on a school bus and sleeping camp-style in far-flung high school gymnasiums all over Northern California with all of your buddies and truckloads of junk food snacks on the many band competition trips we attended, and often won. Long Live the Mira Loma Marching Matadors!

In 1889, a fledgling Washington DC newspaper asked John Phillips Sousa to compose a special march to be premiered at the award ceremony for a children's essay contest the paper had sponsored. With President Benjamin Harrison in attendance, the huge crowd on the grounds of the Smithsonian Museum offer their enthusiastic approval when Sousa led his marine band through this new work. It quickly became one of his most well-known marches not only in the United States, but across Europe as well. The march and the newspaper bear the same name, The Washington Post.

I love this song. It's embedded in my brain from many a Change of Command or Division Retreat. Standing at Parade Rest while some officer gave a speech was never fun, but as soon as I heard the words, "Sound Adjutant's Call!" an electric current would shoot through me, eagerly anticipating the forth-coming command, "Pass in Review!" This song was almost always one of the tunes played by the band as the battalion marched past the reviewing stand.

Four years later, as ex-President, he visited the small town of Hyden, Kentucky, and the Fort Knox Army band played it as he left town. This great John Philip Sousa march was, very appropriately, played as the finale just before the casket of longtime "Washington Post" Executive Editor Benjamin C. Bradlee was led out of the National Cathedral yesterday, at Mr. Bradlee's funeral in Washington, D.C. The piece was played just after "Taps" and the handing over of the folded American flag to Bradlee's widow, Sally Quinn Bradlee. I am so glad it was an upbeat march as the finale for Mr. Bradlee, and not some solemn drone. Ben was an upbeat guy just loaded with chutzpah, and only fitting his swansong should have been as peppy and spirited as the man himself. I don't recall if this march was played at the funeral (held at the same venue) of "Post" publisher Katharine Graham in July 2001, which would also have been appropriate. But for Ben Bradlee, a former commander of a Pacific destroyer in World War II, I think only "Anchors Aweigh" (the U. S. Navy anthem) would have been as nearly fitting an exit theme. I think this may also be my favorite Sousa march, although so many of them are equally great; "El Capitan," "Semper Fidelis," "Stars & Stripes Forever,' etc. If ever a song were to replace "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the U.S. national anthem, I think it should be a Sousa march. I think Sousa could truly be called America's national composer. And this is a rock & roll fan writing this--I also love the music of The Beach Boys, Eddie Cochran, The Everly Brothers, The Ramones, The Rolling Stones, The Ronettes, and Dusty Springfield, among so many others, including Motown, punk, soul and rockabilly. But nothing sounds so American as a Sousa march!
@DougCameraMan
@DougCameraMan 9 лет назад
I agree with everything you said but none of these great marches are on par with our national anthem when properly performed. A recent Rasmussen survey poll indicated that 82% felt the same way I do about keeping it; only 12% were in support of changing it, and 6% undecided. There is absolutely no way that congress or a U.S. president would go against those kinds of numbers to push for changing the anthem... it would be political suicide!

I was always 1st chair drummer all thru school, but when I did a try out to apply for the Marine Band in San Diego during my tour of duty, I didn't come close to making it. The percussionists are THAT GOOD! SEMPER FI and OOH RAH! SSgt Stailey (ret)

I enjoyed listening to marching band music. I especially enjoyed them when the 13th Airforce Band(based at Clark Field at that time) would visit Leyte to join in the celebrations for Gen. MacArthur's return and his troops every 20th of October.
