I was at Hampden Park same day for Rangers v Hearts Scottish cup final and the biggest cheer of the day was when the news came through that Saints had won.
First FA cup I can remember watching aged 10, My grandad came round with a few cans of mild and sat down with my dad and uncle for an afternoon of football. Great memories.
We're still on about the offside? We need to get over it...We had 90 minutes to put into their net and we didn't. Southampton's day, not our day. But many great days afterwards!
The camera angle and the fact we can't see the United left back at the moment the ball is played means we'll never know for sure whether it was offside or not
he was well onside - note how the commentator says nothing (something like "flag stays down" etc) - they normally say that if there is a doubt but he said nothing.
I agree with joe Steinberg...there is a United player out of shot that looks like he played stokes onside...the sad thing is bobby passed away soon after this glorious day for the saints...wherever he is now he is at peace....
I used to have breakfast in his cafe. He was the toast of Portsmouth although he won the cup final for the scum. I just remember him as a nice bloke running a greasy spoon cafe.
Fantastic upload, Thank you. I was ten years old, and has been member of the Manchester United Supporter Club Scandinavian branch since. So it was a tought time being a fan of Manchester United since all my friends was fans of liverpool or leeds united. So even tough I am from Denmark my favourite goal keeper is Alex Stepney. Today it is not that important who will win the ongoing season, but it was not the situation in 1993. It was fantastic, waiting for so many years.
Great goal actually. Good centre-forward instinct - bugger all for 80 minute and get a chance, see the goals off the line and stick it in the corner. Meanwhile Coleman is magic for 90 minutes. Ted Bates I think 1937 - homework as well as presence. Irreplaceable.
Today Manchester City took a big step to winning the league for the first time since '68, I thought I would watch this to remind me of how bad things can get..but they always get better! YANNNNNNNNIIIITEDDDD
We didn't complain on the day. It was tight but Stokes got the benefit of the doubt from Clive Thomas. Still, we knocked Saints out next season and went on to win it.
That's incredible that for scoring the first goal in the FA Cup Final you won a car. You score the first goal in a Cup Final these days you probably get a big enough goal bonus for 20 cars. Ridiculous.
Schmeichel would have save Bobby Stokes shot, but the longer game on you just felt Southampton would find a way of winning. United needed to score early.
chazzaca Bobby Stokes Hated Southampton With A Passion. Bobby Stokes was A Die Hard Pompey Fan, bobby Stokes Grew up in Pompey and supported Pompey his whole life, Bobby stokes was at Scumhampton for the money, that’s it! When bobby owned the manor pub in Pompey in Cosham, he was always saying how much it killed him to put on a Southampton shirt. Bobby stokes never wanted to be at Southampton, Bobby told me in 1994 that he regretted playing for Southampton.
Muddy Funster Pompey Beat Man U in The FA Cup Quarter final in 2008, that Man U team included Ronaldo and Rooney, we beat them at old Trafford, our FA cup run in 2008 was far more difficult that yours in 1976.
@zidoa Actually! EVERYONE that was there that day said it was offside! If you pause and look properly. You can see he's about 1 foot offside. His chest is JUST in front of the Man Utd players, which means (as you can score with your chest) that he is JUST offside!!! And I hate to break THAT to you!!!!!!! But that's the truth as you can clearly see for yourself.
