Celebrated rail photographer John Kirkland set out to film every type of steam locomotive that the Southern Pacific operated in the mid 20th century. This anthology is the culmination of Kirkland’s life work documenting the Southern Pacific empire, the railroad that shaped California and much of the West.

That street running in Oakland, is on 105th ave. Tracks still there. been disconnected from SP/UP/WP for some time now.

The Southern Pacific's Shop Switchers were so cute I love them however I'm sad because all of them were scrapped😢

Southern Pacific rr had very impressive steam power, their articulated engines and their GS class 4-8-4 types are enjoyable to observe in operation. I am glad that the Cab Forward 4294 and SP GS classes locomotives 4449 & 4460 have been preserved, I would like to see SP 4460 be restored to operation and be an excursion service companion to the 4449.

We had air horns on all GS 2-6 loco's and also some on passenger assigned 4-6-2's (2467 etc) and Mt's that had skyline casings.

Makes sense to me. Sounds like 4449 doesn't now have an operating air horn and the steam whistle doesn"t sound to be period correct either. It sounds like a Mississippi river boat.

That was to go through the long snow sheds in the High Sierras. The smoke got too thick for the crews in conventional cab locomotives.

Just like the conventionals, the Cab Forwards also had different numbers. But I don’t see #4100 anywhere.
