Great battlereport and nice to see how the Berlin forces match up in a game. The shooting gap from memory is 3/4 of an inch the width of most tape measures to make it easy to remember :)

I love the channel! There was nothing that one of the players could have done from turn 1 unfortunately. That was an absolute shooting gallery. Commies need about 4 times that much terrain at minimum to even have a chance.

I think he's played so much mid-war that his expectations of what he will have to deal with were off.
@Executioner9000

i feel like the trick to fighting germans is "never play their game." they want hot tank on tank action, so i try to hit their tanks with infantry, and hit their infantry with tanks.
@aaronsomerville2124
@aaronsomerville2124 Год назад
@@Executioner9000 There's some truth to that, but I just don't think that there's a list in Berlin: Soviet that could attack successfully against Kaiser's list on that board. *Maybe* 21 Sherman 76s rushing the objective in the open and just walling it off. But essentially the open sight lines, objective placement and board size mean that there's really no way to flank the tanks that are essentially invincible from the front.
@ModellingforAdvantage
@ModellingforAdvantage Год назад
@Aaron Somerville planes could have made a big difference, or more infantry. I had one vehicle on my left until turn 4. He might not kill the jagdtiger, but he could drive it away from the objective.

It's interesting to see people playing as I suspect that the authors probably do rather than by the letter of the rules. Things like infantry shooting done they way you do are significantly faster than playing the way it is actually written in the book. Essentially roll all the shooting dice from one platoon firing at another platoon. Allocate the hits to teams. Defender can choose mistaken target. Then defender saves on a team by team basis and finally any failed saves mean a firepower test. As for the 'balance' Soviet heavy tanks are utterly dire in Flames of War and German ones are not at all bad. I have yet to come up with any even semi reliable way to deal with King Tigers or Jagd Tigers with Soviets. Aircraft have an outside chance of doing something but no Soviet tanks actually worry Germans :(
@ModellingforAdvantage
@ModellingforAdvantage Год назад
I am actually wondering if the Jagdtiger is worth it, quite expensive for 1 shot a turn when your enemy is going to try damn hard to avoid it. But yes, overall, it is a tough list for the Soviets. I suspect they need to get more infantry.
@JamesHamilton-ut4me
@JamesHamilton-ut4me Год назад
@@ModellingforAdvantage Soviet lists with lots of infantry are not too bad. They work far better against German heavy tanks than any Soviet tanks. What I find annoying is that the big soviet guns are all RoF 1, have terrible ranges and generally lower penetration that similar German ones. It's really annoying as I would like to be able to feel that an IS-2 force, for example, is actually worth playing.

I’d love to see you loverly gentleman do a tale of 4 gamers and run a tournament 🏟️ in the system of your choice. I personally would prefer early war bolt action. But you could put it to a viewer vote 🗳️ and I meant to say my last post absolutely beautiful gaming board

Not enough comments give you guys credit for your superb boards and FIXED CAMERA. So many channels choose to hold their cameras, which I find incredibly distracting and makes for poor content.

Fixed cameras is one of the reasons I started the channel - too many batreps are impossible to follow because it is all up close.

Very fun scenario. It was interesting to watch how devastating the German Panzers were. They were definitely the heroes of the game. Hats off to the Landsers, who took it on the chin and came up fighting , and to the Soviet Tankers who died bravely in the flames. I know that Flames of War tends to be about balanced, evenly matched forces, but that wasn’t always the case in WW2, and especially here in the Berlin ‘45 campaign. If I was designing a scenario, I would have the balance sheet stacked in favor of the Soviets, with 1 German armored platoon/company and 4-6 Soviet tank/SP gun platoons/companies. They would be supported by 1:2 or 1:3 infantry (German:Soviet ** German would be 50% Volkssturm/Hitlerjugend with the remainder split between Wehrmacht and SS; 1 of the Soviet units should be Polish Peoples Army), 1:4-7 airplanes + 1 German AA battery, and 1:4-5 artillery batteries (** Soviet should have 1 Katyusha, 1 mortar, and 2-3 gun batteries). The Germans should be disorganized with some units fighting tenaciously to the last man, while others should easily break. The Soviets should be taking reckless head-on charges with both infantry and armor and take heavy casualties as a result (as happened in your scenario), but because of their sheer numbers they should have an overwhelming pressure that threatens to break German lines at every turn. It never really felt like the Germans were being overwhelmed and overrun in your scenario, but to be fair you were highlighting the Clash of Steel box set and playing Flames of War mostly R.A.W. with balanced forces. All in all, you played a very fun game that was quite enjoyable to watch. I really appreciated that the editor added in those rule tidbits as the game progressed. Well done sirs!

That was a quiet boring one sided game. The Soviet list was rubbish and would only stand a minimal chance with maybe some more terrain to move from cover to cover but the table was awfully open. And it seemed anyway the soviet player didn´t had any plan also. So It was easy to forsee the german victory.

First time her had come up against German heavies. James has mainly played mid war to this point and was a little unprepared for this kind of game. He is used to it being the other way around with cheap heavies on his side. He also set up the table... but yes it was very one sided as it turned out. Re match someday with a revised Soviet list.

I think this was a real shock to James; he has never been on the other end of the indestructible tank scenario. He does have some IL2s, but didn't use them this time.
