As an 8 year old kid living in Dunsmuir near the north end of the yard, my friends and I used to pick the blackberries that grew in huge bushes next to the river and tracks so when we saw the gyro light flashing in the distance, we knew to hurry up and get clear. Not many of those berries made it home, they were sooo good!

Like SO MUCH !!!! I bought my first video camera in January of 1988 so you got footage 2 years before me. It is interesting that between this video and my first video at this location 2 years later you CAN see differences already happening. One thing I noticed is that the carfleet was still all Southern Pacific as SP had not yet been forced to liquidate it s own carfleet to raise survival level cash. After that happened you started seeing The Golden West cars appearing.

More fantastic footage, though signs that the end is coming are starting to appear. Gumballs replacing Gyralights (YUK!!) and buried in an eastbound a brand new Centerbeam. Like the well/stack cars, while they were cool at first, it soon began an end to most of the flats, b/h flats and endless strings of 50' DD boxes. But at least the cars haven't been annihilated with graffiti and cabooses still reign. I see the Baby Boat that was hiding at the end of Part 1 made it out on a helper set. How did that manage to get lost up north? Once again, thanks for posting. It's bringing a lot of smiles (and tears).

Thanks for posting this video. Love the Northern California landscape and the sound of those 645 EMDs. I wish HD or even 4K video was around back then. I've hit Subscribe so I can look at more of your videos. Cheers from Down Under.

Thank you for sharing this! Love the gyra light & horn on first train - great memories there. Were #3 & 4 the same train? The U-Boat helper on train 3 & 4 seemed too quiet - I only heard the EMD, when running U-Boats were anything but quiet!

Yes, the U-boat was operating. You can see heat/exhaust from the stack around 8:06, although it wasn't uncommon for SP motors to fail along the way. Pretty unusual to see a U-boat this far north. They generally stayed south of Bakersfield/east of Los Angeles.

You can hear the sounds of the u boats engine when it is at the crossing. It is very quiet, for a reason that is not obvious, so you will have to listen closely.
