There is a puny Spanish minority in a few towns. One time in Miami I asked landscapers about a job, and they asked me where I was from. They were Native American Hispanics. What Spain is doing here, investing in trade with Africa; if executed properly, could lift billions of Africans out of poverty and make Spain very wealthy again at the same time. Spain's major role in world affairs took place much prior in history (beginning in the 15th/16th centuries), so by recent years and decades, the country's time as a global player had effectively passed. Spain's true and definitive demise came in the year 1898, when it fought a major war against the United States over Cuba. As you can imagine, the US was victorious in that conflict; and the War of Cuba, as it is known here, left a deep scar in Spain's politics and culture. It was the clearest sign that Spain's major role in world affairs was no more, as it was a harsh defeat, so it began a period of introspection mainly dictated by changes in its society that would culminate in the 1936 - 1939 Civil War. Not to say that Spain didn't have anymore role from 1898 onwards, as it had a brief colonial period in northern Africa; but it was surely greatly diminished from what it used to be. In fact, one of the reasons the Spanish didn't consider intervening in the First World War was that the War of Cuba had left the Spanish Navy extremely damaged, so it had no many means to even thinking of joining. And we could say we are fortunate, because considering that both the Spanish political elite and society were mainly consevative, there is a great chance we would have joined the Central Powers, the losing side, so we avoided that. In the case of the Second World War, the story is pretty much the same, as the country couldn't think of joining the conflict because of the recent Civil War it had been fighting, which ended on the very year the World War began. In fact, although the Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco, partially owed its position to Hitler and Mussolini, he nevertheless made as much as possible to hinder German efforts of making Madrid to join the war after that, as the country was devastated. Finally, in regards to the Cold War, Spain was lucky in the sense that, because of its geography, it was relatively isolated from central Europe, where the Iron Curtain was located, so the tensions of that era were not felt that much. The country did however aligned with the US, and granted them access to set military outpost in different parts of the country (which still stand today), in exchange of international recognition of the dictatorship and monetary support. Interestingly, it happened that, very close in time, the Portuguese, Spanish, and Greek dictatorships fell and the three countries transitioned to democracy and entered the EU and NATO at almost the same time.

Good video, just one comment. You seem to make Spain sound like an unwilling or unenthusiastic member of the EU, when in fact Spain is one of the most pro-European countries in the EU. And when you speak about the EU restricting Spain’s spending capabilities and access to funding, I’m not really sure what you mean there, before Spain entered the eurozone the government could mostly only finance itself though printing money because the Peseta was very volatile, and the market had little to no confidence in Spanish public finances. So basically, Spain's economic problems are self made and if Spain hadn't entered the EU and Eurozone the country would be much worse off. P.S. Our dear leader Pedro Sánchez loves to do these grand futuristic plans, puts up a huge show and gets huge PR for a few days, but nothing ever comes of it. In Spain we call it Postureo.

I wish it worked that way. But no it's just soft imperialism. Corporations, global finance and the intelligence agencies have taken over the role of standing armies. One party has the significant advantage and they will most likely take advantage of it. The US has the largest clout within Africa I’m not sure what you mean by little influence, although China greatly spends much more on development schemes within the continent recent studies have shown that in 18 African nations most respondents placed the two nations on similar positions (afrobarometer.org/sites/default/files/africa-china_relations-3sept20.pdf), asked about their perceptions of the economic and political influence of various countries, 59 percent of African respondents viewed China somewhat, or very, positively and 15 percent viewed China somewhat or very negatively. The comparable numbers for the United States were similar: 58 percent and 13 percent. The same study reported that, when respondents in 18 African countries were asked to name the best national model for development, 32 percent cited the United States and 23 percent named China. With moderate American spending within the region the US influence can be greatly enhanced not to mention influence goes beyond just cash schemes, the affluent African middle class have been known to send their children to schools within both nations for education and with American universities ranking the highest within the world I’d argue this would be a clear success for America.

Well Latino American countries are generally much poorer and have a lot more of serious domestic issues to deal with before they can pretend to instigate greater international plans (generally when they do stuff like that it's more on a regional level). And even when it comes to Spain, I have a hard time seeing how they could possibly compete with France and China in Africa considering the former is already established there, controls vast amount of Africa's money and speaks the same language as a lot of Africans and the later has 10 times it's GDP (and that's not mentioning all of Spain domestic issues).

@Cancer McAids that is false. Argentina became the world richest country by 1900's and sadly is the only country in history that went from developed to developing. Most countries fail in latin america because they lean towards socialism and their politics always focus on state intervention rather than economic freedoms.

Equatorial Guinea is one of the most corrupt and less safe for trade countries in the world, that's why it's difficult to expand economically there. Besides, American oil companies support the political status quo with the Obiang dictatorship, so Spain has not much to do there

Brazil and México are already larger economies than Spain, add the US and you have that Spain can pour money and lobby in the region but being unable to defend it. The best example of this is the list of countries who have expropiated at least 1 spanish company since 1995: Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Argentina and Ecuador. If we add the fact most kidnaped spanish turists in México never comeback (unlike US turists kidnaped) you see that Spain has the same leverage in the region that South Korea has XD
